On Sunday, August 17, 2025, Queen Margrethe attended a festive service at Viborg Cathedral in Viborg, where a new chasuble, designed and decorated by the Queen, was inaugurated. The inauguration took place during the service, which was attended by the congregation and guests. Count Ingolf and Countess Sussie of Rosenborg were also present. The new chasuble will now form part of the liturgical life of Viborg Cathedral.
The chasuble is a liturgical vestment worn by priests during the Eucharist. It was designed by Queen Margrethe in collaboration with embroiderer Lizzi Damgaard and the Society for Ecclesiastical Art. The design was created to harmonize with Joakim Skovgaard’s decoration of the cathedral from 1897–1906, as well as with the bishop’s cope that Her Majesty designed for the diocese in 1989.
Since the mid-1970s, Queen Margrethe has designed—and in some cases personally embroidered—a number of paraments or church textiles for churches in Denmark, Greenland, Germany, and England: ranging from richly detailed bishop’s copes and chasubles in white, red, green, and violet for the liturgical seasons, to antependia (altar frontals), as well as a wedding carpet and even a hymnal cover.
What a beautiful garment. Such a lovely legacy the queen has left for generations. Such a nice hobby and skill. Her dress is a very pretty colour blue with a dainty pattern. This is one lady I would love to meet.
ReplyDeletei like that about her, even if she was Queen she had time to pursue her hobbies at such a large scale, and still continues to do that in her retirement.
DeleteIn the catholic church the chasubles are very simple since many years. In the old days the priests wore also chasubles which were decorated and embroided with gold threads. Often it were the people of the parish who donated money to buy a new chasuble for the priest of their parish. Also the family of the priest donated money because of the little salary he received from the government he couldn't pay that.
ReplyDeleteDespite of the many times the liturgical ceremonies of the catholic religion has been simplified, many catholic churches have been closed because the older people of the parish died and the younger people are not going to church any more.
The churches which are still there are used for funeral ceremonies, for weddings (I think in my parish there is maybe one wedding during a whole year). Mass on Sunday is now in a small chapel which was used before for the baptizing of babies. The church is a modern building and has been used during covid to vaccinate the people of our town.
Fashion wise, Queen Margrethe is wearing a very chic and elegant ensemble of a lovely light blue summer dress and a short jacket. Her stockings have the right color, not too white like she used to wear before. The white hat suits her too.
So what is your point, that it will be discarded when no one goes to church anymore?
DeleteThis is true of many European diocese but not true everywhere. My Catholic diocese is very active with churches filling up for mass, especially the Latin Mass. There is a conservative revival of the older ways among young people. The American media doesn’t report this because the media is mostly liberal and anti-conservative. But conservative news sources reports more young people attending the sacraments, joining seminaries annd convents, wearing veils at mass, and looking past the trends of the last 50 years for more meaning in their lives.
DeleteBeautiful, ornate chasubles like QMargarethe’s are worn weekly at my church in beautiful ceremonies. The pomp and beauty are very much alive.

DeleteI have heard of these catholic churches which are returning to the revival of the old days : mass in Latin, old ways of praying like I've known as a child. I have also heard and read about the fact that the Pope and the cardinals and bishops in Rome do not appreciate very much these "separated" groups in the catholic church. One must also take into account that younger people do not wish to go to church anymore after the high number of catholic priests who are (were) involved in the abuse of children. Many cases were covered up by the bishops and cardinals with the so called "cloak of charity". The priests received maybe a punishment and afterwards they could start the whole abuse over and over. It is only when the abused children grew up and became adults who dare to speak and made the public aware of what happened to them when they were children, that the whole catholic community in several European countries were so disgusted with it that many people turned their back to the catholic church, took their children away from catholic schools, catholic youth organisations, etc...
La reine est bien pimpante dans l'association de cette petite veste bleu pervenche sur cette robe imprimée que je crois lui avoir déjà vue ; ravie de la voir avec des chaussures blanches !
ReplyDelete@ 18.40 - interesting, but Viborg Cathedral is Lutheran.
ReplyDeleteAgain, a perfect demonstration of what kind of jacket to wear over a dress. If only Sophie would notice it ... Queen Margrethe's design on the chasuble is beautiful, I would love to know what the figures on it stand for. A sheep, a puffin (?), maybe a musk ox, and ...?
ReplyDeleteThe four figures represent the four major Gospel writers. St. Luke is an ox, St. John is an eagle, St. Matthew is a Man and St. Mark is a Lion.
DeleteThey are probably the Evangelists. Matthew is symbolized by a winged man or angel, Mark by a lion, Luke by an ox, and John by an eagle.
DeleteThank you so much. I took the lion for a sheep :-). Nevertheless, the figures are very sweet in their naive representation.
DeleteWhat a talented lady the Queen is. So nice to see her, she looks great. Also nice to see the Count and Css of Rosenborg there as well.

How lovely HM looks. The periwinkle blue is so flattering. I like the waist length cut of the jacket. We’ve seen a lot of royal ladies wearing boxed jackets over summer dresses, which I find unflattering, and takes away from the dress. Here HM dress and jacket work together to give a seamless finish.
ReplyDeleteLowri.
I agree; the entire look is balanced head to toe, and is a delight to behold. The right shape, length and colour of the jacket make such a difference. Lyra
DeleteI agree this lady know what suits and how to wear it. My favourite colour blue.
DeleteI agree. Her entire ensemble, both as individual pieces and worn together is/are perfect in colour and design. Queen Margarethe knows her stuff. She looks great.

How wonderful HM looks, the ensemble is very becoming, love the color palette, she looks well and happy. Lovely to see her.
ReplyDeleteQueen Margrethe is such an amazing lady! I love her dress and jacket--the colors in both are so flattering for her. Her jacket is designed at the perfect length for a dress. The chasubles designed by HM are so beautiful--rich colors, rich and lustrous fabrics, and beautiful imagery. HM is a very talented artist and she has designed a stunning legacy of her artistic talent for future generations to enjoy not only in the church but also her designs for the ballet. It is so nice to see Ingolf and Sussie supporting HM.
