  1. Wow, the little Ariane is growing up and gets more and more pretty!
But in general I think there is a "too much" in the appereance of Maxima and her daughters. As if they try to look elegant but fail to do so.

Maxima's hair & make up look nice. The girls also have beautiful hair. They look lovely all dressed up. Mary I

I think they all look fine, but none of these outfits is outstanding. Q. Max has a tidy hairstyle for a change, although I’m not sure the centre part is the most flattering on her. Her dress is interesting, especially with the beautiful necklace. The eldest girl is going to be a stunning woman. I’d say she already has the poise and bearing of a future Queen. (V.M.)

They all look great. I Iike how Maxima's hair is styled- love the butterfly. I like Alexia's dress but don't love her shoe choice. Ariane looks nice. Amalia's dress is my favorite of the sisters. (Probably because I own a very similar dress by Needle and Thread.) I love her earrings.

    1. Agreed on Alexia's shoes for 2 reasons; they absolutely clash with that dress and her toes can't stay on the shoes. But I do think Amalia looks fantastic, she is a gorgeous young lady.

Máxima's dress might be from the Dutch designer Iris van Herpen? I love this dress, very special. Hair chapeau?
Amalia: her dress is better for an elderly woman.
The Maje dress is lovely, but unfortunately the wrong shoes that take the intention away from the elegant dress.
The dress of the youngest one is in my opinion also more suitable for an older woman

I also thought of Iris when I saw Q Max's dress.

It is a beautiful, intricate, modern design that looks great on her.

The dress and emeralds are an unusual but successful pairing.

    2. It is an Iris van Herpen dress, indeed. Agreeing on Princess Alexia's black shoes, they certainly clash with her dress. Amalia looks a bit too matronly in the flower dress. I quite like Princess Ariane's pink and cream number, though.

I wonder if they had a dress code as a family.
When the women wear a long dress shouldnot the king wear Black- tie?
Now it is a bit of a mess together: you can call it “ individuality “ when you want.

  8. Always a dilemma to comment on 5 ladies ... I will just mention my top2 : Maxima n°1, her dress, makeup etc fit perfectly for the occasion, and Ariane n2, the youngest for the freshness of her style in all respects.

  10. This is such a sartorial mash-up that I don't know where to start. Máxima's dress is lovely. Excellent choice for the occasion. I'm not sure about the girls. They always look to me as if they were dressed a tad older than their age, especially Alexia, who is only 15 and looks 25 in this outfit. Catherina-Amalia's dress is lovely but perhaps has too much volume and too little definition. It ages her. She has made, however, the best choices in terms of accessories, especially her shoes, and is second to her mother in terms of appropriateness and elegance. Her hair and makeup are beautiful. Alexia's dress is very nice, but perhaps too mature for a 15-year-old. Her shoes are awful, not matching the dress, the time of day, or the occasion. She is always hyper-aware of the cameras, and therefore perhaps less natural in her poses. Ariane's dress is age-appropriate and lovely, but her shoes are too chunky for the dress. She needed something more delicate. They should all ditch the horrible shawls. Beatrix's sapphires are beautiful.

I agree with all your comments. In my opinion, Alexia's dress way too old for her and she always acts and dresses as a sexy 26 year old. Perhaps she wants to be flamboyant like her mother.

I always have to smile about Alexia's appearance.
I don't know if this royal family can be advised on fashion matters, if so ... they should fire the adviser.
Amalia looks like she's wearing a dress on her grandma's.
Arianne's dress doesn't fit in the back or front and the cut
and the length doesn't suit her.
Alexia's wardrobe doesn't suit her age.

I think Ariane’s dress is the wrong colour for her. I like all the other dresses. I really don’t like Maximas hair styled like that as it doesn’t do anything for her.

  15. Love these family occasions. Queen Maxima is an easy winner for me--beautiful dress, hair and make up, next Alexia with a great dress in a lovely colour but badly spoiled by the awful clumpy shoes. Amalia is becoming a very beautiful woman, the photo of her turning towards the camera (number 6) is stunning but the dress is too old for her and I'm not sure it is the right length. Like the shoes though Ariane's dress is okay but needs something more--can't put my finger on it. Is it colour? the tiered effect? the beading? Queen Beatrix is wearing a beautiful blue top but the rest of the outfit is unexceptional. The king is just beaming with pride with all his lovely ladies around him.

Looks like each lady chose her own outfit, which is fine. I think they all look good & happy. Nice to see all six of them.

Future-queen Amalia is stunning. Alexia, being probably the shortest, has propelled herself to new heights with those awful espadrilles; however, the color & style of her dress suits her very well. Ariane, always my favorite of the 3As, is becoming quite pretty & looks nice here, although the top & sleeves are a bit tight.

Máxima is Máxima, I'm not crazy about the crazy waves on her crazy dress nor her centre part & exposed ears, which doesn't suit a 50-year-old "Sarah". Turning 50 in The Netherlands is cause for a big celebration... wonder what else they'll do privately.

    Happy Birthday to Máxima!

    1. Genuine question, what on earth doe the sentence "centre part and exposed ears, .....a fifty year old "Sarah" mean? Centre parting refers to her hair, but why would a centre part(ing) not be appropriate if you are fifty. And exposed ears? Who is "Sarah"?

    2. Hi Annie M, 'seeing Sarah' (or 'seeing Abraham') is a Dutch fun saying for someone who has turned 50. It comes originally from the Holy Bible, where Jews asked the Lord Jesus how He could've seen Abraham even though He hadn't turned 50 yet.
      I hope this clarifies a bit :-)

  17. Maxima looks lovely. This dress is interesting. It isn´t my favourite, but I like it a lot. Her hairstyle works great with the outfit.

Amalia - not a bad dress but it´s not the right style for her, it needs a slender silhouette to work. Also, I think that neither black nor busy patterns are good for her. Her shoes look horrible.

Alexia - fantastic colour on her. The dress is nice but I wish it had an even hem. Alexia unfortunately ruined her look by those horrible shoes.

Ariane - my winner here. She looks fantastic. Colour, style, accessories - all great. I even like the length on her better then on the model. And she got the shoes right - these look delicate and are just right for the dress.

Beatrix - nice to see her. The blue is lovely, but her outfit is overall too dark and solemn, both for the season and for the occasion.

Overall, a much better family effort fashionwise than on King´s day.

I think Maxima looks terrific. Her dress fits, with no tight areas, and the pattern creates a slimming effect. I also like her hair very much. I am a person that likes to see a change of hair style on occasion, especially when hair is long. I am loving this simple, sleek style, and find the center part very flattering. I can't see for sure what Maxima is wearing, but two of the three girls are wearing stockings with their shoes. Any open-toe shoe should be worn with a bare foot. I like that the girls are allowed to express themselves as individuals, but I think they could use a little guidance as to what is appropriate in public settings, for their ages, and for their positions. ~d

  19. What a mish-mash! I agree with Lisa Paris comment. So sad the royal Dutch family don't have an assesor to tell them how to dress and look their best. They sorely need one. It's a shame because the 4 women are beautiful and could really look great, with help.

Beatrice: Lovely, classic, good look for her.
Youngest daughter: The dress is cheap and ugly looking, not a good color on her, nor are the shoes that look clunky.
Middle daughter: The outfit is really nice. The sporty espadrille wedges do not go with the outfit she is wearing.
Oldest daughter: Looks older than she is. The dress is lovely, but not on her, the shoes make her toes look squished.
Maxima: Not sure the dress is for her. It is interesting, in an odd way, but not really good way. She should have worn the oldest daughters dress.
Hair on all of them looked good. Makeup, overdone on the young girls.
    Maxima's jewels looked lovely.
The King: Looks ok, nothing special, just his routine suits.

  22. Princess Beatrix looked very pretty, I thought. Her diamonds and sapphires matched her dress perfectly. It's the first time we've seen her in quite some time, and I'm glad to see she is seemingly well. I must say, the granddaughters could have shown a little love for her. She was off to the side and she seemed to be disconnected from the others.

Best not make personal judgements based on a few selected photographs. Instead do some research and look for more photos of that event. You will find a video tape (as I did) that shows them all arriving together, and later Amalia and Queen Maxima interacting with Princess Beatrix, and in some cases Princess Beatrix opting not to get too close to the family group even though she was gestured to do so.

  23. I really like how they express themselves with their clothes, they all look ok they are beautiful girls. I hear the comments on the clothes being too old for them but to be honest they are growing up and it is difficult to dress teenages. They either look too old or too young. Most teenagers would prefer to look older! As a parent you just have to let it go and try guide them away from revealing or inappropriate clothes. It doesn't matter if the are royal or not.

I can’t like Maxima’s dress, I tried but the flesh colored transparencies in an attempt to make it a little risqué just makes it weird, if it had been on a contrasting blue it could have been a winner, because the silhouette and tailoring is flattering, I like her hair and the jewelry is beautiful . Amalia’s dress is unflattering regardless of who is wearing it, such large print on a long dress , there is so much fabric that it looks like a curtain, the shawl only adds to the excess of fabric. Contrary to most I really like Alexia’s shoes but not with this dress. Love Arianna’s dress, so sweet and boho at the same time, pity that is not tea length.
All the shawls need to go, they look so busy and unnecessary with these outfits.

I also noticed what they describe.
Princess Beatrix got at least during the photo shoot,
not a loving look, not a hug from their granddaughters.
    Maybe because of Corona?
The Dutch are actually a warm family.
At least that's how I perceive it.

@ Debra, why look for the negative when in my opinion is not there, why implying that they aren’t showing Beatrix any love? I would guess that according to COVID protocols this family are technically considered two different households, and because they are outdoors they are posing together but keeping a certain distance from the elderly grandmother. On the other hand what other Royal family poses with outer key signs of affection? Can you imagine the British even touching the Queen in public? Oh yeah there is one exception Queen Sofia that generally is all over her granddaughters while the press
is present ( personally I think she does it to irritate Letizia 😉)

I'm sorry, but I have to say that as a family they have no sense of fancy dress at all. The Crown Princess, for example, urgently needs to take into account what kind of body shape she has. If you're more inclined towards Rubens, you can't wear such a flashy, full-figured all-over pattern. Don't the girls have fashion advisors? Also, I would just find the colour coordination of the dresses more pleasing to the overall look of the ladies. The King looks best, followed by Maxima and Beatrix, then a big gap and then I'd have to roll the dice. Frieda

  30. I'm not impressed with any of the outfits here, except the former Queen's.
The oldest Daughter is very beautiful, but she needs to stop trying to hide her shape under masses of flowered fabric.
The two younger ones are trying too hard to look older, neither the green nor the pink dress does them any favours.
Maxima's Dress is very unique, but the skin coloured top looks strange and ill fitting.
Me thinks they can all do better, maybe with a little fashion advise?

  32. Catherina-Amalia should have chosen a more youthful and less cluttered dress. Something along the lines of the dress her sister Ariane is wearing. She's only seventeen, she'll have time to wear dark dresses.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Young girls always want to look older than they are and women as they age often want to look younger than they are, youth is beautiful and best not covered up and masked with too much make up in my opinion. Less truly is more.

  34. Anonymous16/5/21 08:11

Hair and make-up on all ladies look nice and very age-appropriate to me. Willem-Alexander and Beatrix look really good. Maxima is wearing a nice dress, but she has worn better dresses in the past. I think it's the colour, she looks best in stronger colours.

It seems like the girls were able to choose their own dresses, which I can only applaud. They have the age to have fun with clothes and try things. Just maybe the family should pick a leading colour for events in the future to look a bit more co-ordinated (like the Danish chose blue at prince Christian's christening). That way they can each wear their style but it would look a little more sleek as a family.
