To those who know more, why is Caroline referred to as Princess of Hannover (when Germany is a republic so no active princessing is going on) when she’s also Princess Caroline of Monaco (which is a valid working title of an ongoing principality)? Wouldn’t Princess / Monaco carry the greater weight as it actually means something?

    1. HRH Princess Caroline of Hanover is still married to HRH Ernst August of Hanover who is still styled as Royal Prince of Great Britian and Ireland and she will still retain that title even if they get divorced!

Pour répondre à votre question et à ma connaissance, Caroline est
toujours marié au prince de Hanovre !

I think anon12:34 is not asking about the marriage to the Prince of Hanover, but more about why the use of the tilte Princess of Hanover for Caroline.
If I'm not mistaken Caroline is "Her Serene Highness Princess Caroline of Monaco", and became "Her Royal Highness Princess of Hanover" after her marriage. "Her Royal Highness" is a higher ranking title so I guess that's why she should actually be called by this title.

    6. There is no "royal highness" in Germany. The country is a republic, not a monarchy.

I am going to guess that by using this old title it gives her a higher standing than Princess Charlene and her sister Stephanie. Rank is important to some. Regardless she has the decorum of a royal,

In modern times, Caroline would have been the monarch. She was the senior female of the family when her mother passed away, until her brother wed, much like Princess Astrid of Norway. A very special position in the family.

I'm not too sure why this blog has chosen to identify Caroline as the Princess of Hanover today when she is usually referred to Princess Caroline of Monaco here. However, Caroline is indeed HRH Princess Caroline of Hanover because she is married to Prince Ernst August of Hanover. The Hanover HRH is of higher rank than the Serene Highness of Monaco, so it is actually proper to use that title for her. As to why the Hanovers are still referred to as HRHs in the German republic--guessing it is a courtesy title for them as well as many other members of the former nobility of Germany. The Hanoverian titles are also still part of the British royal titles--the current House of Windsor used to be called the House of Hanover (yes, Queen Victoria added Saxe-Coburg). Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III are descendants in the House of Hanover established under King George I. I rather doubt Caroline is concerned about her rank within her own family and this choice was in no way made by her nor was she consulted. Her daughter Alexandra has been referred to her and on other royal sites as Princess Alexandra of Monaco--and this is an error. She is Princess Alexandra of Hanover. I rather doubt she cares either.

No one claims Germany is a monarchy. But hereditary titles are part of the name so there's nothing wrong in naming them Prince/Princess of Hanover. Also the court of Monaco lists Caroline under HRH Princess of Hanover.

She is not the only royal who has a title through marriage. Princess Astrid of Belgium (although she does not use that title) is also Grand Duchess of Austria through her marriage with Prince Lorenz. Among royalty and artistocrats these titles have still a meaning even if they are not monarch any more. These old monarchies do not exist any more but their great grand children and their children still do and some of them are very, very rich. I can understand why Princess Caroline does not divorce from Ernst August. She has a daughter with him. It has everything to do with power and money.

Great looking suit. I think she's simply letting her hair grow out naturally and it gets lighter as she does. Kim

An example of perfect tailoring. I'm not a fan of wide trousers, but these are hemmed precisely to flatter Princess Caroline's proportions.

Caroline looks beautiful in this MaxMara white suit. I love her choice to be herself and age as she wishes. I'm not sure if she's changed her hairstyle a bit or is styling her differently but it's a perfect look for her.
