Princess Kiko and Princess Kako Visit the Yamamura Goryu Ikebana Exhibition

Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement

On April 8, 2026, Princess Kiko and her daughter, Princess Kako, visited the “Yamamura Goryū Ikebana Exhibition,” held at Nihonbashi Takashimaya in Tokyo. Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. Its origins date back more than a millennium, when customs from China and Korea were introduced to Japan, including the offering of flowers to the Buddha.

The Yamamura Goryū is a traditional Japanese flower arrangement (ikebana) school with strong historical ties to the Enshō-ji nunnery (temple) in Nara. Approximately 70 works are on display at the venue, guided by the 13th head priest and grand master, Dōshū Hagiwara. Princess Kako, who was visiting the exhibition for the first time, toured the displays.

In fashion everything is coming back ragularly, especially the length of skirts and dresses. I have known it was fashion to wear a mini dress under a midi coat.

I know! That was one of the first things I noticed as well. I thought, "Oh wow we actually have a hemline above the knee!" I'm surprised TBTB allowed this.

“Modern” in western fashion may be not the same as “modern” in other cultures. Fashion is art and different around the world. We shouldn’t expect norms from our culture to be norms for others nor criticise them for being different.

  4. The light blush soft blue colored two-piece suit looks fabulous. The length of the skirt, YES! I cannot recall seeing her wear a skirt this length before, I could very well be wrong, but she looks modern, and stylish. I like the length of her jacket, all in proportion with the skirt. The color of her shoes and clutch, perfect. Her hair looks lovely. Very elegant look.

Princess Kako has obviously been given more sartorial freedom under the rigid dress protocol at the Imperial Court, which is a delight to witness, incredible. Her mother’s shoes look somewhat heavy, I don’t quite understand the shape.

Virginia it’s not necessarily a rigid dress protocol - it’s also Japan, a wonderful country doing a great job holding onto their own culture and own norms and not letting themselves be too quickly overrun by America’s commercialism and mass cheap fashion.

Dear 11:43, There have been contributions on this blog from Japanese bloggers which confirm that the dress code of the Imperial Court is far stricter than the rules observed by women from traditional families, I therefore do not understand your reaction.

  6. Bien élégantes toutes les deux même si je préfère le look de Kako dans son ensemble bleu pâle qui nous montre mieux ses genoux et jolies jambes ; je remarque de l’amélioration dans le style de leurs chaussures !

Beautifully restrained outfits to match the simplicity of the building’s decor to give the focus to the ikebana. Less is certainly more. Western fast fashion has a lot to learn from Japan.

Both mother and daughter look very nice. I like the length of the dress pss Kako wears. She is young she does not need the longer dresses.
