King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden celebrated his 80th birthday. On this occasion, numerous members of European royal families and heads of state gathered in Stockholm for the celebrations. On the evening of April 30, the King hosted a banquet for invited guests at the Royal Palace in Stockholm.
Members of the Swedish Royal Family, including Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Princess Estelle, Princess Madeleine, Christopher O’Neill, Prince Carl Philip, and Princess Sofia, attended the banquet at the Royal Palace.
Among the European royal families in attendance were King Frederik, Queen Mary, and Queen Margrethe of Denmark; King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium; King Harald, Queen Sonja, and Crown Prince Haakon of Norway; Grand Duke Guillaume, Grand Duchess Stéphanie, and Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg; Hereditary Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein; Queen Sofia of Spain; Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands; as well as King Rama X and Queen Suthida of Thailand.
The Royal Tiaras at King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 80th Birthday Banquet
Queen Silvia of Sweden wore the Braganza Tiara, paired with a diamond rivière and large diamond earrings. Crown Princess Victoria wore the Connaught Diamond Tiara, along with the earrings and brooch from the Leuchtenberg Sapphire Parure, as well as the Duchess of Albany’s sapphire bracelet.
Princess Sofia of Sweden wore her wedding tiara with the earrings and brooch from the Napoleonic Amethyst Parure. Princess Madeleine of Sweden wore the Modern Fringe Tiara, paired with the earrings and brooch from the Pink Topaz Parure.
Queen Mathilde of Belgium wore her Laurel Wreath Tiara with a Graff diamond necklace and diamond scroll earrings. Queen Sonja of Norway wore the Norwegian Emerald Parure with the Order of the Seraphim.
Queen Mary of Denmark wore Queen Louise of Sweden’s floral bracelet as a tiara, paired with antique diamond earrings and one of Queen Josefina’s diamond brooches. Princess Benedikte of Denmark wore the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg Fringe Tiara with a diamond floral brooch and a diamond sautoir necklace.
Grand Duchess Stéphanie of Luxembourg wore the Aquamarine Bandeau Tiara with matching earrings. Queen Suthida of Thailand wore the Thai Diamond Fringe Tiara with diamond earrings and bracelets.
Hereditary Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein wore the Habsburg Fringe Tiara with sapphire earrings. Queen Sofia of Spain wore the Mellerio Shell Tiara with a canary diamond suite and the Order of the Seraphim. Crown Princess Margareta of Romania wore the Romanian Greek Key Tiara with the Fleur-de-Lys brooch and a diamond suite.

Congratulations are in order for His Majesty King Carl Gustaf, happy birthday!!! Given the scale of the celebration and number of guests I'll try to keep my posting on tonight's banquet as short as possible. I'll like to mainly cover my favorite looks and special mentions.
ReplyDeleteSweden: Her Majesty Queen Silvia looks beautiful sporting the Braganza tiara and the red one her is simply stunning. Princess Estelle looked lovely in her lilac dress, she's growing up so fast. One of my favorite looks of the night had to be Princess Sofia's outfit. The burgundy ombre skirt is gorgeous and I love the amethyst stones on her tiara.
Denmark: While I don't like her dress it was a nice surprise to see Queen Mary in a new tiara. I read in another article that the jewel is actually Queen Louise's floral bracelet which is being used as a tiara. Only time will tell if this change is permanent.
Belgium: Glad to see the Belgian monarchs were able to join for the evening festivities. With that said I love that Queen Mathilde decided to wear this orange gown again. She had previously worn it for a state visit to Denmark back in 2017 and I've loved it ever since.
Luxembourg: It is her first time attending a big royal gathering as Grand Duchess and I think Stephanie looked very elegant. Her light blue dress matched perfectly with her aquamarine jewels. Definitely a 10/10!
Spain: Another lady in blue was Queen Sofia who wore one of my favorite tiaras from the Spanish collection, the Mellerio shell tiara.
As a royal watcher tonight's birthday banquet was such a treat. It always so fun and exciting to see royals gathered together with their orders and glittery gowns.
where is UK? they tend to decline so many invites, could have sent DE Sohie.
DeleteI wouldn't agree with your comment on Stéphanie's evening gown. The colour is fine but the fabric is too light, see-through on certain photos and the bodice is too tight. Not flattering! Her day dress, a red coat dress was good and to her advantage.
DeleteMary's evening gown was a bit strange. Sylvia looked splendid and I liked Mathilde's orange gown.
The Thai queen was -as always - very elegant and beautiful.
Truly, they all look lovely. They are all appropriately dressed for a 'family' tiara birthday party (as opposed to a state banquet, where the added intention is to impress one's visitors with lots of everything) and none of them are dressed OTT, but instead set the right tone of restraint. For me, my favourite is Mathilde. Lovely dress with a light frothy skirt, beautiful colour, and it fits her perfectly. Honourable mention to Mary who wears a modern style quite attractively, and then her mother-in-law who is always dressed stylishly and colourfully without putting a foot in the wrong direction.
ReplyDeleteI'm also pleased to see that some of the elder members of Europe's royalty were able to travel and attend their cousin and/or friend's 80th birthday.

thecourtjeweller.com has great pictures and explanations of the jewellery. So many of the pieces worn by the guests have Swedish connection, so yes ´family´tiara. Beautiful gowns but I think Queen Mary´s is more of a black tie dress than gala.
DeleteOn this occasion, Mathilde is rather far from being my favorite. I will not make any precise criticism on her gown, but I don't like it overall.
Delete@ MaryT & Mia
DeleteI like Queen Mathilde's dress which is almost 10 years old. Quality (it is an Armani dress) stays longer good than a cheap dress. Queen Mathilde has a fair skin and she does not use a lot of make-up (she is not the only royal lady who looks pale to-night). I think she still looks good in this dress. It fits her which proves that her body weight didn't change much in almost 10 years. I also love her jewelry. I think she is one of the few royal ladies who is wearing her own tiara (a wedding present from the Belgian nobility). On her wedding day she wore the Art Deco tiara which belongs to Queen Paola. Her diamond necklace is bought at jeweler Graeff about 3 or 4 years ago. Maybe the earrings are her own too, I cannot see well which earrings she is wearing. I cannot see either if she is wearing a bracelet or a watch or ring (except for her wedding ring which she is wearing always). Queen Mathilde has perhaps not access to so much jewelry than the others but she has an excellent taste. We will never see her overloaded with necklaces, brooches, bracelets like so many. She prefers to wear 2, maximum 3 beautiful pieces of jewelry than the complete collection she has at her disposal.
Hängt so a bisserl einfach runter. The tiara is stunning!

DeleteI do not agree with your comment on Queen Mathilde. The same picture on another website showed a better looking face. It is a question of light and of make-up. You must not forget that in the afternoon the King and Queen where still in Ghent (Belgium) to open the Floralies (flower show) where Queen Mathilde baptized a new variety of the Azalea flower which received her name the "Mathilde azalea". Queen Mathilde has a very busy agenda during the month of May. I hope she will coop.
The only miss for me is Mary of Denmark. Everyone looks great, the Thai Queen for me looks fabulous.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. A frumpy dress and a flat, boring hairstyle.
DeleteQueen Silvia was outstanding. The crownprincess in a lovely dress and so is pr Madeleine.
Sorry for the photos that doesn’t show the sparkling dresses I saw on svtplay.se.
The King looks very dignified and impressive in his uniform and regalia. The Swedish royal ladies look lovely. Madeleine’s and Sofia’s tiara hair looks especially good. I don’t love Sofia’s ombré dress - it has a little bit of a more casual vibe to me - but her amethyst jewelry is beautiful, including the toppers on her versatile tiara. Estelle is looking so grown and pretty. Usually I think Mary looks phenomenal, but I do not like the style or pattern of this particular dress and her hair looks a bit too tightly styled. Stephanie is wearing lovely aquamarine jewelry, and light blue is a good color on her, but her dress needed better foundation garments under it. Mathilde’s dress does not seem like the best color for her. Fashion aside, it looks like it was a very happy occasion as the King’s family and friends celebrated him. The group photo is a great historical record of the event. I can only imagine how much effort went into getting everyone rounded up and posed for it.

Wow. What a collection of fabulousness to end the day. The Swedish family, just faultless. Queen Silvia, absolutely stunning, CP Victoria elegant and stylish, Princess Estelle lovely, Princess Sofia gorgeous, Princess Madeleine terrific.
ReplyDeleteI am running out of superlatives but among the best of the guests Queen Mathilde, Queen Margrethe and Queen Sofia. The only fail for me is the normally faultless Queen Mary.
Lovely to see so many of the different royal families there to honour the king
Yes, many very well dressed royal ladies. Madeleine was splendid, so was queen Sofia of Spain. I am not sure if Estelle's dress was adequate for a young girl of fourteen ..... the colour too pale.
DeleteNow that I checked the Court Jeweller blog for all the jewels, I saw a whole-body photo of Queen Sofia of Spain and I must say, she looks really lovely, as does Benedicte.
DeleteEstelle looked absolutely gorgeous and fine for her age. Check the videos of her arrival.
DeleteA royal fashion bonanza!!! I think everyone turned out looking fabulous but my favorite is the Queen of Thailand. The fit of the gown is perfection and I really love the design. And happy birthday to the King!
ReplyDeleteQueen Suthida of Thailand, looks beautifully groomed. Her gown is stunning. It fit her superbly. The design, fabric and slight train, so elegant. Her clothes are always well suited to her body type, length, style and fabric are always 100% perfect. I love the off the shoulder look. Her Fringe tiara, diamond brooch, and diamond earrings, beautiful jewel pieces, they work in well with each other, well thought and put together. What I truly love is the gorgeous diamond brooch, this is a stunning piece.
ReplyDeleteQueen Mathilde looks so pretty and very elegant. The style is slightly different as is the color, but I love it. Her jewel pieces are well combined and suit her gown, beautiful presentation.
I love Queen Mary's jewels, something about the gown, I don't like, not sure what that is!
ReplyDeleteWill write more tomorrow, not slighting anyone. Good to see TRH of Thailand. The contrast of his dark tux and her light dress looks great. Chris
ReplyDelete@ Mia - Treffend zusammengefasst. Sehr gute Beobachtungsgabe. :-) Anne
ReplyDeleteWould have loved to see Mary in the first tiara we ever saw her in: that stunning ruby one. So much beauty but rather comparing them - how can we? all such different ladies - I will say the dress I would most love to wear is Mathilde’s dreamy orange one. I would ask to borrow Madeleine’s tiara for the evening ;-)
ReplyDeleteI agree that almost everyone is looking looking fabulous - especially Princess Estelle, whose gown is a soft romantic colour, and looks light, effortless, and comfortable - just the right note for a young teenager.
ReplyDeleteBut Mary's gown - I am so disappointed. The enormous pattern looks like a Hawaiian shirt, and what's worse it overwhelms the jewellery and the new tiara - the 3 brooches and the sash star in particular are difficult to make out. For me, no redeeming features and a complete miss. Lyra
Agree about Estelle. Such a beautiful young lady!
Top Model of the evening the Thai Queen!
ReplyDeleteAbout average beautifulness everywhere, nothing that takes my breath away. If I have to choose, it would be Victoria and Suthida. In both cases the winning features: no wide skirts, somehow I have enough of wide skirts lately ... less is more, and this is why Victoria's and Suthida's gowns win: no fabric overflow and also no glitzy overflow! Slim elegance wins (for me), and if it has to be lace, then grey, like Suthida's gown. Surprisingly unattractive is Mary's gown. I don't find anything on it that I like. Not the high neck (that she seems the favour lately), not the keyhole (that she likes, and OK, but not on this dress), sure not the sleeves , and very sure not the overall pattern. Wearing her hair long with this gown would have been a catastrophe, so her updo is the only praisworthy feature ... and the tiara.
ReplyDeleteTo my own 10:48 above a footnote: Usually, Queen Silvia is impeccable and often kind of innovative too. This gown I don't like, she does not really "own" red and shiny red even less. The neckline could be a bit more open, the sleeves a bit more short and the skirt a bit less wide ... well, yes, I don't like it. Looking desperately for something I really like ... it cannot be one more cape to hide in on Stephanie, can it? :-)
DeleteI admire our former queen, now princess Beatrix for wearing such dainty shoes at the age of 88 !!
ReplyDeleteSome nice dresses. Like Sofia from top to toe. Like the colour and fabric on Mary's dress, but the style is terrible. Not a fan of her flat hair either.
ReplyDeleteWell, there were also King Harald and Quee Sonja of Norway (plus Crown Prince Haakon) in attendance, with Queen Sonja wearing the Emerald Parure. Plus Bavarian relatives (House Coburg), in the Turquoise Tiara, and also the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Serbia (no tiara, the already elderly Crown Princess has just recently recovered from cancer treatment). What I truly wondered about was where the former Greek royals had been, as they are descendants of Queen Ingrid (born a Swedish princess) of Denmark. Strange. Notably absent the House of Windsor (well, with KC III abroad, okay, but either the Edinburghs or the Gloucesters should have made it to Sweden) and the House of Grimaldi (Monaco). The Thai king and queen only made it to the birthday party because of a connected state visit, otherwise they most certainly would not have been present, just as other royals from more far away countries in Asia (think Brunei, Bhutan, Japan, Malaysia), or the Middle East. It was - except Thailand - a totally European affair. I liked all the dresses (yeah, I see why Queen Mary's choice was not much liked by others), but most of all the tiaras were just a sight to behold. The Braganza, oh my. I am actually impressed how creative Queen Mary has become in the jewels department, with yet another new tiara to appear (a bracelet made into a diadem). Pity she didn't wear the Ruby Parure (she had not in quite some time now; it might be she thinks it a "Crown Princess" piece), that set would have gone along with her dress so well.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to the King! He's always handsome and his uniform is impressive.
ReplyDeleteHMQSylvia looks spectacular, regal as usual m and that gown's fabric is so rich and thick it is the perfect palette for the incomparable Branganza.
CPVictoria looks exquisite. Did you see that sapphire bracelet?! I do not remember that one. I love how the Swedes pull out extra special things during events like this. I could not help but to wonder if the King will pass the baton soon. I think she's ready, let's see if he is. I read a portion of her speech late last night and she talked about the values he instilled and how she will bring them forward. She will be an excellent queen.
PSophia, I am always surprised but delighted when I see yet another set of toppers on the Palmetto tiara. What a thoughtful gift that set was and is. She is wearing other jewelry from the amethyst collection and that makes me happy. I don't like ombre but she does and she looks great. Her hair in particular is well done.
PMadeleine always looks amazing and this is no exception. I do think her fringe tiara needs something between it and her hair. Something more. The pin gets lost on her sparkly gown, but this is a night for big jewels. Her eyes amplify everything she wears!
HMQMatilde looks amazing in the tangerine color! I love how her style has developed. She's gotten good advice and aims high. I wish the tiara chosen for this occasion was one of her larger beauties, but the gown is really lovely.
The Thai queen, HMQS is beautiful and looked perfect.
It pains me to see both Princess Beatrice and QMargrethe with canes. But, Grand Dames!
QSophia's Mellario tiara is a favorite of mine and I'm always happy to see it. I am struck by the beautiful personal set of jewels she wore that match so perfectly with the appliques on her gown. So well done, as usual, and she brings an understated style that is still elevated somehow.
HMQDStephanie she looks beautiful, but the flat nature of the aquamarine and even the citrines always are too low in my opinion. I wish they could be reworked in a way to make them higher to give better proportion. This gown is a good choice and she looks marvelous.
PSophie, glad to see her there, lovely, and it's a small thing, but the one shouldered gown exposed the wrong shoulder since the sash has to go the way it does. Unfortunate photo of a crooked tiara too. I am guessing no regular stylist is employed there.
P Estelle - wowza! how did she get so big! We are all seeing it before our eyes! How wonderful to see her at an evening event! I do wish there was a little age appropriate bling on her, as the family has so many unique and meaningful things.
HMQMary - one of my absolute favorites usually, but everything about this outfit was a miss for me. That small tiara should go to Josephine when she is of age, and I agree with an above comment that the pattern looked like a Hawaiian shirt. Use this gown again in ten years for a non-royal event. Rare miss, and sad given all she has at her disposal.
I am not sure of Margareta of Romania's title, but when she attends something she is always put together well and the Greek Key tiara is really beautiful.
Finally, I always love these large photos opps to mark an important occasion!
The Brits couldn’t be bothered to send anyone? Seriously? Well… that tells you how self absorbed they are
ReplyDelete14:14 you are simply making assumptions. You can have no idea what the arrangement was between this celebration and the UK. There may have been none, a purely European invitation list. It is awful to assume someone is self absorbed without knowing the story.
DeleteI don’t attribute their absence to self-absorption, but I do think it’s unfortunate no one from the British royal family was there. Some of them would have been required to stay in the United Kingdom to act as counselors of state while Charles was out of the country (William, Edward, Anne), so that was probably a factor, but still - unfortunate.
Delete-Royal Watcher
And you are sure not just a tiny but prejudiced against them, or are you? Do you really think this is the right place to vent out your negativity against them, for all of us to enjoy? - Maybe you did not notice that Kind and Queen of the UK were in USA - and Charles would have been of the same age as the Swedish king and maybe, just maybe, this is why it was not the King and Queen of Holland or Spain who came, but the previous monarchs, getting out their walking sticks? The value of your comment for others here equals zero.
DeleteThey never come to Europe for gala evenings with the rest of the European Gotha. Exception : Duchess Sophie, the only one you can find on pictures of anniversaries, birthdays, etc... She cannot be on duty each time there is an invitation of one of the European Royal Families. And since there are not much other relatives left.........
DeleteIf you don’t receive an invitation to a gala, you can’t just show up! This is the funniest of assumptions!
Deletereply to 20:41.
DeleteI don´t know but I thought the reason why so many previous monarchs attended (Beatrix, Margrethe, Henri, Sofia) was that they were royal colleagues for so long and their reigns overlapped with Carl Gustav´s for decades (he is the longest-reigning current king, going on 53 years). There surely is a strong personal bond between them.
No one as yet has mentioned Hereditary Princess Sophie, so I will. Her dress, the royal blue color and simple style, complimented her long slim body. Jewels were modest, compared to the rest of this crowd. Glad she didn't add a necklace, better to show off her long neck and pretty shoulders. Maybe a matching clutch instead of the gold.
ReplyDeleteMrs Cleaver
Madeleine looks terrific, just as her older sister Victoria. And so many other wonderful looks.

ReplyDelete15:95 what what?!
DeleteI see a lot of commenters saying they don’t like Mary’s gown. I suspect it would be stunning in real life and with movement. Just because it’s different doesn’t mean it’s wrong. It’s a style we have not seen before but with her impeccable taste, I can’t believe she would be wearing something that’s not terrific and flattering and queenly. Re her hair, as she’s not home she may well have used a hairdresser who she doesn’t know well and the result is a tighter than normal style. Let’s give credit and not call people “a miss”, eh?!
ReplyDeleteMary's impeccable taste - really? She looks like she is going to a Hawaii party! The pattern, cut and overall style is just a big NO.
DeleteEveryone has off days and like others I do not like this dress pure and simple. In my opinion it is not terrific flattering or queenly. These are not gods just humans and all royals wear outfits that are not wildly liked from time to time. For me yes it is a miss.
DeleteNobody calls Mary "a miss". And if the gown is "a miss" for some (for me too), so it should not disturb you more than the fact that you like it disturbs me.
DeleteI'm one of those who described Mary's outfit as a "miss" -- not Mary herself, just her outfit.
DeleteThere’s a huge difference.
At the rank of queen, most outfits are chosen months in advance by a personal stylist, not the queen herself. A queen's input into her outfit choices can be a lot less than that of an ordinary person -- no more perhaps than choosing fabric, or reviewing and OK'ing the season's new wardrobe additions a few times a year. The late Queen Elizabeth trusted her stylist to choose the Queen's outfits, and I'm sure other queens also do this, at least to some degree, to save time.
Mary’s royal stylist(s) is undoubtedly a well-paid, top-tier professional whose job is to make the nation’s queen look fabulous on every occasion, every single time –- and especially for occasions like this gala, where still photos are mandatory and formally posed. While I do make allowances for a royal’s more low-key public appearances, where the stylist’s input may be less, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect exceptional style results for high profile events where experienced professionals are involved in every aspect of the process. Lyra
I actually really like this dress. It is not remotely Hawaiian. It’s sleek and elegant and fits her beautifully. I particularly love the beautiful sleeve details. I say yes to her trying something different!
DeleteOf course they all look great. The most wonderful photo is that of Victoria and Daniel holding hands with Estelle by their side. What a beautiful family!
ReplyDelete@14:14- rather than 'couldn't be bothered' perhaps they were not invited. I find it odd that the Thai king and 'pretend' royals such as Romania were. Neighbours, family and friends?
ReplyDeleteThey always received invitations before and who was sent to represent everyone else ? Sometimes Princess Anne but almost always the D of E Sophie, at first with her husband Prince Edward and later on alone. I can imagine it must not be fine for her to be there alone each time. In the end I think she gave up too. The British Royals only took the Eurostar to gather with their cousins for remembering services in Normandy (Fr.) and also in Ieper (Flanders) and to visit British war graves in France but almost never on birthday parties in the Scandinavian countries. This time it was not for a birthday party of a young prince or princess who became 18 years old but for a reigning king. Is it not because the former royal families has no kingdom anymore that they have not a good relationship with their family in Sweden and Denmark.
DeleteDear Mrs. Cleaver, Actually I thought princess Sophie‘s gown was the most elegant of all. I checked the flag of Liechtenstein: royal blue, red and gold, hence the colour of the clutch, a clever look, a superb performance.🇱🇮
ReplyDeleteJust a beautiful assortment of dresses, jewels a magnificent display. The men’s look so polished especially the king always impeccable. This group photo says allies for life, sad that the majority of that generation are in advanced age, we could use their diplomacy and decorum for years to come.
ReplyDeleteI think this is one of GD Stephanie’s more successful evening looks; the color of her gown is beautiful, and this particular neckline always looks wonderful on her — ditto the cape dress style. Add in her elegant updo and those ravishing acquamarines, and for me it’s a definite win ❤️ — Jane
ReplyDeleteRe Hereditary Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein: I was very pleasantly surprised to see her actually dressing to the occasion. Often, I feel her choices are subpar. She often looks under dressed to me for formal events both day and evening. I do wish she had taken care to make sure her tiara was on straight though. It looks like she just plopped it on.
ReplyDeleteLiechtenstein is a little little principality in the countryside, on the side of a mountain. Being casually dressed here is very normal. She doesn’t dress “sub par” but completely normally and respectfully for our context.
DeleteDid Mary change seats? Look at photos 16 and 17.
ReplyDeleteNo, she didn't. It's King Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) of Thailand who is absent in one picture. Perhaps he needed to go ... erm ... places, you know. This way, Queen Mary could lean a little to her left and chat to the lady seated next to the Thai king (Queen Mary on his right side, the other lady - who I think was from Iceland - on his left).
Prinsessan Madeleine samma disney imitation.
Queen Silvia: maybe her dress is a new version of her wedding dress?
ReplyDeletePrincess Sofia: IMO her tiara is unbalanced, stones on the top are too large
Princess Estelle: top front under the lace top is not going right, hope they corrected it during the evening
Queen Mary: because late Prince Henri had connections to Vietnam, I think the dress is from there
