On 23 February 2026, Queen Mary of Denmark met with the new Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Diene Keita. At the meeting, which took place at Frederik VIII’s Palace at Amalienborg, the Executive Director spoke about UNFPA’s ongoing work and priorities, as well as the challenges the organization faces in its global efforts.

Queen Mary and Diene Keita also discussed the project “The 10 Million Safer Births Initiative,” which Queen Mary launched last year in Nigeria. The initiative is based on a concrete and ambitious goal of providing up to 10 million women with access to safer childbirth by the end of 2030 across sub-Saharan Africa. Queen Mary has been Patron of UNFPA since 2010.
