The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are undertaking a four-day official visit to Japan. On the third day of their visit to Japan, the Duke and Duchess visited Sojiin Temple in Koyasan, a historic temple founded during the Kyuan era of the Heian period. The Duke and Duchess were welcomed by the Mayor of Koya, Yoshiya, and Wakayama Governor Izumi Miyazaki.
On July 7, 2004, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inscribed Koyasan as part of the 'Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range' on its World Heritage List. On this occasion, the Duchess of Edinburgh wore a green floral-print silk dress by Max Mara and a white jacket by Altuzarra.

Veste cintrée longue sur une très jolie robe déjà vue également trop longue !
ReplyDeleteThe coat saved the dress
DeleteEach of the two pieces look beautiful when worn separately in the manner that they were designed to be worn. To wear them together completely diminishes their individual effects, unfortunately. The jacket looks so good with the trousers, and the dress needs to be seen in full to be appreciated properly. Stuffing the dress sleeves into coat sleeves ruins the look of both pieces.
ReplyDeleteIf Sophie needed to show formality to visit a sacred temple, she could have/should have worn something else. She has so many options at her disposal.
Edward looks good but I wish his jacket was shorter. Would have made a big difference.

Hi Anon 9: 13.
DeleteMy thoughts exactly.
Cate.
Sophie’s bare feet on tatami are a serious faux pas in Japan. Socks or slippers!
ReplyDelete@Anon 13:20 Wouldn't they have had some to offer her if she came without any, like they would for other visitors who might not have known? Maybe it isn't such a big deal? Just wondering.
Delete- Anon 9:13
I thought slippers were not allowed on tatami, and that socks are preferred over bare feet (but one can go barefoot).

No faux pas. She’s an esteemed guest and they would have had slippers waiting for her if that mattered to them.
DeleteShe is most likely wearing stockings. They don't count? Also, I agree that they would have provided something for her to wear if they cared. These visits are very well orchestrated. They were completely aware of and prepared for this visit. They are not leaving anything to chance to embarrass their guests or cause them to commit a faux pas.
DeleteSame misjudgement as so often: to wear two pieces that do not work together and thus ruin the whole appearance. But the dress alone fails to impress me too. I wish Sophie could call it a day for shirtwaists, self-belts and allover-small flowers - all the worse while all three combined together. The wide arms add to the whole bulky appearance of a lovely person who is not bulky at all herself.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right.
DeleteBeautiful white blazer with another shirt dress !
ReplyDeletePrince Edward's jackets are always too long.
I prefer not black shoes with light beige pants but light brown or beige shoes.
Duchess Sophie must not have been informed about the bare feet and that she had to bring socks or slippers with her. Normally when one must take shoes off to visit a temple or a mosk there are slippers foreseen for the visitors, but possibly not in Japan.
Regarding Prince Edward’s shoes, the traditional rule is „no brown after five o‘clock“. I am sure that Sophie observed the correct tatami protocol. These visits are always meticulously planned and the British Royal Family is highly experienced.

DeleteMaybe it is a traditional rule in Britain but wearing black shoes with light beige pants and jacket is not done in the rest of Europe. If he absolutely must wear black shoes, he should also change his suit. Or must that not be changed after five o'clock ?
Maybe he wore these shoes because they were easy to slip off and on. They also seem to have a band of a different colour across. Also wearing white socks which most men would were black with black shoes or beige to match the pants. Regardless he looks just fine. This couple has their preferred style, a bit old fashion but nevertheless properly dressed in colours that suit them.
DeleteTrue royals, not fussing about attention, just get in and do their duty, with grace dignity and class.
ReplyDeleteI like the jacket and I like the dress, but together isn’t giving the desired look I think Sophie might have been going for. The box jacket is more suited to a trouser. A bolero style jacket would have been far more flattering on her.
ReplyDeleteLowri.
As long as she is wearing the wrong dress any jacket will not look good, because of the bulky sleeves.
DeleteI agree, but try and pair a little bolero-like jacket with these wide puffy arms ... the problem is, one has to "compose", not simply add. Sophie is simply adding. Queen Mary is, for example, a splendid "composer".
DeleteIt’s so interesting - another Royal wears these types of suit jackets over dresses and is always lauded, but HRH the Duchess of Edinburgh is always criticized for the exact same type of pairings. Like many others here, I often like the individual pieces very much, but find they don’t work together. That’s the case here, I’m afraid.
ReplyDeleteThe dress is very see through having seen it on other websites, she needs to wear an underskirt. Always cheerful.
ReplyDeleteThe white jacket is gorgeous, fit and style suits her well. I quite like this dress. The Duke looks well groomed and attired. I like his ensemble. He looks smartly dressed. Great tour so far, very much enjoying the coverage.

The white jacket is very elegant . Too bad she didn’t pair it with the white pants on the model. That would have looked chic. But that dress she wore would look frumpy and matronly on an 18-year old . So sad.
ReplyDeleteI am not clear if Sophie fired her stylist. This trip she showed up in particularly uninspired outfits.
