On September 23, 2025, Princess Aiko of Japan visited the Japan Racing Association’s (JRA) Equestrian Park in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo for the 50th Day of the Horse celebration. Since 1968, the JRA has designated the autumnal equinox as ‘Day of the Horse,’ featuring traditional equestrian performances from across Japan.

Princess Aiko watched traditional equestrian arts, including Horohiki, as well as a parade of horses from different regions, at the Equestrian Park. She also observed a show-jumping performance by local junior and senior high school students from the Tsurumaki Riding Sports Youth Club, along with Kazuma Tomoto, a member of the team known as 'Old Boys Japan,' which won the bronze medal in team eventing at the Paris Olympics.

Very nice dress and jacket, perhaps too much of a mature look for her. It would be nice to see her in more youthful clothing but keeping within protocol.

Indeed there's nothing wrong with this "ensemble" but for a woman of 60+ not for a young lady. And the young people of Japan know how to wear modern fashionable clothes without being " loud"

This is really very well chosen, the little jacket is really nice with the dress and the dress has a terrific length, bravo! So much better then longer. For me, either one of her best appearances or maybe, the best.

Her lock of short hair hanging across her forehead needs to be grown out.

No, it does not "need" to be grown out. It is the style in Japan.

its the style in Japan that does not suit her unfortunately! Her hair does not grow out thickly, it gives a bald appearance to the young lady

Really, needs to be grown out? What authority says this and why? Could you imagine that this "lock of short hair" is very fashionable for young women in Japan and nobody cares what the rest of the world thinks about it?

I would like to see the princess in a lighter color and maybe in something more age appropriate.

Agree, like PKako. She looks for ways to modernize the court look and always looks impeccable and stylish. But not everybody cares about fashion. This princess looks a bit old fashioned but ‘appropriate’. A bit like PAnne

Both Aiko and Hisahito need to grow their fringes out, neither of them are small children any more.

@Anon in London, they "need to ..."? what you say is cultural/fashion colonialism and as such, in equal parts ridiculous and irritating.

    この日の愛子さまはとてもきちんとした装いですけれど、更にブローチまたはスカーフをお使いになったら、もっと素敵になったと思いませんか。

She wears a white necklace, it tends to disappear behind the neckline, which is a pity. I imagine that a pink lipstick would be nice.

  11. @Anon in London, don't you know that fringes are very in trend now - also in London? And this is a very popular hair style in Japan, has always been. Your comment shows complete ignorance and lack of respect. I'm so tired of these "rules" how other people should look or how long or short their hair should be. From where are these rules coming, from one's own head? Also many older ladies look very good in their fringes and bangs, they soften facial features.

Aiko's dress looks youthful and very nice with the short jacket, well done.

A while ago I discovered a beautiful picture of Princess Aiko and her parents when she was a little girl. The picture was taken when she and her parents (not emperor and empress yet) visited the Netherlands. On the picture one can see Princess Aiko and Princess Amalia hand in hand. Empress Masako worn her hair in a bob just above her shoulders, what a wonderful beautiful thick hair she had on that picture. It is a pity she is always wearing her hair pulled back now.

As we age, hair can become much thinner and that bob simply does not work any more (same here with me). Additionally, if one uses hair colour, it makes hair a bit thicker, but also damaged, so sure not more beautiful or shiny as it should be for a bob.

As we age … ?! How ‘old’ do you think P Aiko is ?!

The Empress is not that old yet. Pulling back your hair all the time is not very healthy too. Hair color doesn't damage the hair. My dermatologist told me that only using ammonia containing products damage the hair which means the ladies who didn't had blond natural hair in their youth and now are blond all the time are risking to loose their thick hair due to the treatment they use to keep their hair always blond. People who are coloring the natural black, dark brown or auburn hair to hide the gray hair which is appearing slowly but surely will not loose their thick hair as quickly because they don't need to use ammonia containing products. What also must be avoided as much as possible on people who have thinning hair are styling devices which have direct contact with ones hair. Brushings that are made with too hot air. All these treatments are bad for the roots because they risk to burn them.
I also have thinning hair. It is hereditary from my father's side, my grand father had it, my father and his sister my aunt all had the same problem. The only thing that can help is the use of a hair grow lotion "minoxydil" (pharmaceutical name), but as this product has side effects, best is not buy it without consulting a dermatologist first. He or she is the only MD who can tell you this treatment is recommended for you.
