So I must admit that before now, I had not heard of, nor known of this branch of Prince Phillip's family. I could have missed it but I don't recall seeing or hearing of any of them attending any of the British Royal family's events over the decades, including weddings and funerals, despite being so closely related, and this gentleman himself seems to have been quite prominent in his own right. There also doesn't seem to be any representation from the BRF at his funeral. I'm guessing that the families were not close?

His father enlisted in the German army at the beginning of WWII, so the family became ostracized by the BRF. Ladyofthemanor

    5. Bernhard, then Hereditary Prince of Baden and now Margrave of Baden, was one of the 30 attendees at Prince Philip's funeral. There is a family connection but I'm not sure why the BRF didn't send a family representative.

I think they attended various BRF event but alway kept a low profile - probably the “German Issue” still hovering around

Thank you to everyone for your responses. I'm happy to have learned something.
@Pamela: Thank you. Good to know that there was representation at P. Phillip's funeral among the few guests due to Covid rules.
@Ladyofthemanor and Anon20:16: Yes, that aspect probably would have been an issue.

The King, Princess Anne and the Earl of Wessex were officially represented by some of their German cousins. I'm not sure why they didn't attend in person but they did enjoy close relationships in private. I suspect that given the media circus around the BRF at the moment it was something of a relief to the Baden family.

Prince Philip was close to all of his 4 sisters and was to some extent raised by them, since his father basically took off and his mother was in a psychiatric hospital. He also spent 2 years at Salem, the German boarding school co-founded by Max of Baden's father, his sister Theodora's husband, before he went on to Gordonstoun.
All of Philip's sisters had married Germans, so because it was so shortly after WWII, none of them were allowed to attend his wedding to Elizabeth, which I believe he was very sad about.
But they were invited to Queen Elizabeth's coronation, including the Badens.
As has been said, Max of Baden's son attended Prince Philip's funeral, along with 2 representatives of the families that his other sisters married into. It was important to Prince Philip that his sister's families be included and they went to great lengths, isolating for 5 days or so in the UK.
Max of Baden's wife, son and daughter-in-law also attended Queen Elizabeth's funeral (Max of Baden probably not being well enough).
Prince Philip's relatives have been invited to BRF weddings such as William & Catherine's, he did visit them in Germany and the Queen often invited them to Windsor.

  6. I also find it strange that the British royal family sent no representatives. I am interested to see who they will send to ex King Constantine’s funeral. I believe most of the other royal families will be well represented.
