Throughout 2022, the 50th anniversary of Queen Margrethe’s accession to the throne was celebrated with a series of events. It is an old tradition that on anniversaries, new portraits are released, and as an end to the jubilee year, two new portraits of the Queen and the royal family have been released.

  2. The group composition is very odd and looks estrange, both between the Queen and the Crown Prince, and between the Prince couple and the Crown Princess. I love the dress of the Queen and Princess Marie, but Mary's dress is not flattering, gives me horrible Morticia Addams vibes!

    1. I have to agree that this group photo is the most awkward. I absolutely love Marie's dress, and the Queen's dress is great too. I'm not a fan of Mary's dress either, maybe it just doesn't photo well.

  3. I like Margaretha"s blue dress very much, while Mary's lace dress is too busy. A plain dress that matches the colour of Margaretha's dress would have been better. Especially cause the Danish royals have the strange habit of overdoing decorations at any place on their uniforms or dresses. It looks really clownish to me. Together with a lot of jewelry it's too much, although I realise that it's a state portret.

  4. Yes rather odd picture, everything seems to have been measured with a lot of precision and nothing seems to be natural. Joachim and Marie look as having adapted their posture to some negative atmosphere or feelings around.
From a fashion point of view, I don't like Mary's dress.

    1. I think these were taken round about the time the queen announced to remove the prince and princess titles from Prince Joachim's children. Maybe that explains the negative atmosphere.

  5. Magnifiques portraits officiels ; j'aime beaucoup la robe de la princesse Marie ainsi que la délicatesse de son diadème ; dommage que je ne puisse pas mieux voir ses boucles d'oreilles !

  6. Princess Marie's buttery yellow gown is beautiful. Her jewelry was limited to her tiara and earrings, but I think, with the order of the elephant and collar, it was perfect. I love CP Mary's rubies and how she wore the order of the elephant. Queen Margrethe's jewelry was too much and looked disorderly. With the collar and the order of the elephant, the corsage was not needed, and the delicate chain under her necklace was unfortunate. The Queen's blue velvet gown is lovely. CP Frederik and Prince Joachim look very handsome in their princely regalia.

  8. I love Mary’s dress. She looks regal in it and complements her husband well. What I do find odd Is this almost old look to picture. Almost from another era. I guess they will have to start looking at how the modernise there monarchy

  10. Love Queen Margrethe's blue velvet gown and silver shoes. Lovely. Like the family portraits but just a shame that we know that Joachim's family will be downgraded from January 1st. Why not have a split between Royal House and Royal Family like the Swedes or the Dutch have?

  11. The fabric of the queen’s gown looks like cheap velveteen to me. Being seated causes her corsage to bunch up and all the jewelry, and orders which I know are historic and valuable, make for a junky appearance. I don’t care for Mary’s outfit either.

  12. The men look impeccable and the women also look good, although they seem to be dressed for three different seasons between the different colors and fabrics. Top honors for Mary’s dress, which fits perfectly, and love her necklace and tiara…just beautiful. They all manage the many embellishments very well, which seems a challenge alongside the beautiful jewelry and tiaras!

  13. Trovo la compostezza della principessa Mary di un'eleganza inaudita. Splendida donna che puo' indossare quello che vuole.

  14. Princess Marie looks the best to me. Mary’s dress is too busy and the Queen is wearing too much jewelry. She would be better following Coco Chanel’s advice to remove one item before leaving the house lol.

  16. They all look ill at ease, but for the queen. Mary and Marie and their husbands look good. The queen's dress, shoes, pose, fixated smile and so much jewelry makes her look cartoonish.

  17. Beautiful photo. Mary's dress looks superb. Love her choice of tiara. Pss Marie's gown looks divine, this really suits her. The Queen looks so regal and elegant.

  18. Personally, I think the ladies are both very beautiful. CP Mary and Princess of Wals appear to have the same plastic surgeon or Photoshop. LOL It is more than clear imho that the Queen and she looks devine - has an absolute favorite child and can't stand one.

    2. Agree! Lots of plastic/cosmetic tweaks AND Photoshop...

    3. No, I think you're wrong. On the contrary, it is very ridiculous to me how Joachim and his wife are fixated on titles. It's so childish. I think the title "prince and princess" should be limited to the children of the monarch or direct heir.

    4. Maybe the Princess of Wales hasn't had any plastic surgery but don't rule out Botox and other cosmetic, non-surgical proceedures. And she, like many royal women, are usually photoshopped and filtered to oblivion. Nothing wrong with any of that but look at any untreated photo of Mary, Kate, etc and you will see the wrinkles and signs of aging that are inevitable for everyone..even royal women.

    5. So much gossip mongering! Just stop!

I wasn't thinking Joachim is fixated on titles as much as he is wondering why there has been a change of heart at this point in his children's lives. It would seem to make much more sense and come across as kinder and more gentle to announce that going forward for future generations, only the heir's children will be princes and princesses. Taking titles from her grandchildren does seem harsh, but it is her decision to make. I don't see what difference it would make if they would keep their titles if they are made to live like Beatrice and Eugenie. They would work and support themselves. Then again, there is a lot I don't understand. I worry that this is how they will remember their grandmother.

    7. To Anon 02:12 Every monarchy reforms and slims down. Why does Joachim's daughter need the title of princess? she lives in the French REPUBLIC (!) and goes to school there. Of course, it must be flattering for the girl that she is a princess, she gets a lot of attention from her classmates and teachers because of it. But that should have been her parents' job to explain to her that a title does not create a personality or an identity. Likewise, Joachim's older children - they are in their twenties - the title of prince (whether they admit it or not) gave them an undeserved advantage in work (modelling). It is clear that they do not want to lose this advantage. They should have more self-confidence and courage.

  19. I think the picture of the five of them has been photoshopped. Marie and Joachim are far away, and the carpet is not right.

  20. I'm a bit overwhelmed by these pictures. Everybody looks good individually, but together it all seems to be a bit much. Too many patterns, too many glittery things, too many orders, too many colours. And all of that in a very stiff arrangement that looks heavily photoshopped. I actually like Marie the best here. Her dress is elegant, but understated, gives the room and the jewels space to breathe, while still looking well put together. Mary's dress, while pretty, is too busy for the whole arrangement and I wish she had worn her smaller tiara instead of the rubies, which seem to clash awfully with the gown. I also think Marie's yellow and Margrethe's blue complement each other well, while Mary looks a bit like the odd one out. I think they can all do better.

  22. Photoshopped or not, this looks nothing like a family picture. No warmth, and actually very little kindness coming across. Empty stares and forced smiles. Lots of shiny pump and circumstance objects that look cartoonish. Lots if jewelry and stashes and insignia-but some Hollywood productions look more genuine than these pictures. Makes one wonder if they are at ease with themselves. From what transpires in these photos, my guess is the answer is “not really “. Proof that titles don’t mean much in the end, it’s the people that matter.

    1. It is not a family picture. It is an official photograph that will be displayed at various official locations. That is why the queen is wearing the full Pearl Poiré parure and all her insignias. That is why CP Mary wears her most important tiara, the Ruby tiara left to CP Fredrik by his grandmother, and by the way I think it looks very good with the dress. This picture is all about pomp and being regal. Ladyofthemanor

    2. Well said! Wonder how happy with their lives any of them are? There is a lot of tension there.

    3. Spot on, Ladyofthemanor.
This is not a family picture.
It is for a museum or to hang on the wall of one of their chateaux for people to look at in, say, 100 or 200 year's time.
It is a classic composition and style which is being used as part of their Danish history.

    4. Really? It’s not a family picture? Why would they call themselves the Danish Royal FAMILY then?

Like it or not, it’s a very contrived picture. Even the heads-of-state “family” photos look more natural and people in them seem happier to be together than people in this one. It’s unfortunate because the main thrust of monarchy seems to be missing here. 1200 years old or not, official portraits or otherwise labeled, the feeling the photo conveys is rigidity and sadness. Could have suited 1200 years ago, but today it is just that: rigid and sad

  23. Mmh i don't like it, agree with others, looks like a three different seasons portrait, too much jewelry, all lovely and historical value but the combination doesn't work for me.
Also I find more handsome on standing poses, all said, the two princess are beautiful ladies, but is not on the best portrait of this family

  24. The Danish monarchy is very old, 1200 years, and this official portrait does nothing more than to reflect a long and proud history, it is not about family or excessive jewellry. All ornaments, especially those of the queen, obviously have a specific meaning and are worn according to protocol.

  27. Queen Margrethe has had problems with her back already for several years now. That's why she seems to prefer to sit (and not stand for longer periods).
About the titles: Joachim's elder sons weren't interested in studies (university or military academy) and choosed to become fashion models instead. Not very royal. But you get better paid if you are a prince than a count. That explains a lot.
