  1. All of the royal ladies look very nice, especially Empress Masako and former Empress Michiko. I appreciate how Empress Masako's hat mirrors the scalloped edge of her jacket. Former Empress Michiko's gown is gorgeous. Crown Princess Kiko's gown is pretty, but I wonder why she chose a color when the other ladies (those shown) chose white or cream.

  2. Look at Michiko! That perfect neckline, that brooch on the most perfect spot (it looks like part of the dress, or maybe it is?), that long pencil-like skirt, just a bit tighter than usual - she makes the impossible possible: looking extraordinary as a Japanese royal woman. I adore her look. (-Ann.)

    1. I love the way Michiko tends to incorporate a somewhat kimono-like silhouette into her sleeves. It's become a signature look for her and is so elegant.

  3. Sooo pretty. These ladies know how to do formal daytime. I love the detailing on Empress Masako's hat and jacket.

  4. Wonderful to see these elegant long gowns when we see so few of them these days. Also great to see the former Emperor and Empress looking in good health. Crown Princess Kiko's green dress is my personal preference, though all look good

  5. Indeed! All the ladies look regal but former Empress Michiko embodies pure elegance. Her outfit is beautiful, head to toe. I also love Empress Masako's ensemble but would have liked the skirt to have been slightly more fitted, to give some shape. I like the scalloped edging of her jacket, further reflected on her hat.

I must look up why Japanese men have adopted the British code of Morning dress/Top hat and tails as a pinnacle of formal attire. We've seen it many times. What is the reason for this historical dress connection?

    1. Good observations, good question -Anon 9:13. If you come up with information as to why they want to look like Prince Charles, please relay it on.

  6. Photo N° 7 (Empress Masako) ..... stunning.
Such elegence on the part of all the ladies in the Royal family.
A joy to see these photos.

  7. From Joann: As usual, the Japanese ladies are the epitome of taste and elegance. BUT Masako should have worn her hat titled toward the back of her head a little. (Or selected a different style). The mask has to be taken into consideration, in my humble view. Masako needed some hair showing because of the mask. I did love the hat though. Princess Kiko did push her hat back and her hair is peeking out, just giving some relief to the severity of the mask covering her face. I loved all the gowns and as we have discussed on this forum before, when it comes to tailoring and detail, the Japanese fashions are second to none..

    1. Yes, Japanese tailoring , male and female, is second to none.
English male tailoring is impressive but boy, do you pay for it.
My hubby dreams of having a suit from a renowned English tailor.
We talked with our bank manager about an overdraft, but he advised us to get a suit from Marks and Spencers and showed us the door :-((

    2. Masako's style of hat is just not flattering, and the mask just makes it worse.

I am sorry to say that each time I see the Japanese royal women, I can't help but think "Stepford". I understand this is their tradition, but is stifling. These ladies cannot shine as individuals.

  10. You can see on masako's sideview, the poorly fitted jacket gives an illusion of sagging breasts. The tailor need to fix it.

    1. To be honest, I think her entire outfit is ill fitting - it's too big. Could do with being a size smaller. You can see this in the loose jacket around the arms and shoulders and the voluminous skirt. A little more shaping/tailoring would have given her a lovely silhouette.
