    1. Princess Mary is lucky to be included in the small percentage of people who are gifted, as adult learners, as being able to become fluent with second and maybe third languages. Unfortunately, I not in the small percentage. Fourty odd years of trying and I still speak my second language awfully. Fashion wise, good example of what to wear for a cloudy, family day in the garden. Thoughtful gesture on their part... bravo.

Sorry but it's easy to hear that she's not danish.

One can speak fluently even with an accent. The fact that you can hear that she is not Danish doesn't diminish the value of her achievement. Particularly in the English-speaking world, the need to learn other languages is not that great, and thus even those with a college/university degree may be mostly monolingual. And when you know that learning new languages becomes tougher as you age (especially if you don't have former experience of learning new languages) you really have to have your hat off to her. Speaking fluently is also the most difficult part in learning new languages.

I think we should give Crown Princess Mary a well deserved applause for learning Danish. I'm Norwegian and I barely understand Danish, even though my language is almost identical to Danish written language. Their pronunciation is crazy bananas. I think Queen Margrethe once said in a speech that Norwegians understand Danish people when they're talking reeeally slowly, and that's correct, haha.
Researchers have also found out that Danish children are way behind other nation's children when it comes to learning their own language.

Great for them to do this they all look good in casual clothes. Regards Crown princess Mary learning Danish she sounds fluent to me, she will probably always have an accent most people do that learn a second language. The crown prince speaks English with an accent and he sometimes muddles up what he says. It's still a great achievement to learn a second language. Everyone stay safe and be kind.

    6. And dear Anithahemma, SURPRISE? SURPRISE. When Mary speaks English (her mother tongue) you know straight away that she is not English. She has a charming Australian accent and will probably always have her Austrlian accent. For me and after 40 years of living in a foreign country and speaking their language fluently ?? I still have a terrible accent. People say that when I speak it sounds like a Spanish cow trying to talk ...... not nice hey!

      Delete
    7. yes Kara, I fully agree speaking fluently and keeping an accent are two different things!! I think it is too easy for native speakers to critisize a foreign accent.

    8. Accent is not an indicator of fluency.

This was a lovely message and very natural! I have a lot of respect for Mary and she's pulling a very significant workload for the royal family. She does a terrific job! As for her Danish language capabilities, she has been in Denmark since ~2002 and should at this point be expected to speak the language fluently, as the future queen. She has an accent, and this is very normal and will not go away, however, I must say that she still makes very basic grammar and pronunciation mistakes that I do not believe are acceptable for someone in her position...she has had access to, presumably, the best language coaching one can get. As soon as she has to improvise, she's very uncertain and makes at times major mistakes...I find it this quite surprising and somewhat annoying. I realize this might sound a bit rough, and I'm not looking for perfectly-pronounced Danish, but speaking properly and with correct grammar is pretty fundamental...again, also for someone who's going to be Queen. Kind regards ajeurope (and, yes, I'm from Denmark)

Lovely video. So genuine and natural sounding, and lovely to see the whole family participating. Would love it if someone could translate it for us non-Danish speakers.

    2. Frederik: Dear everyone. Our world is different from what it was weeks ago. We are all missing going outside.
Mary: It’s Friday afternoon now, and we have come outside to get some air. It’s the second week of homeschooling which has caused the need for readjustment from both children and parents. We’re talking a bit about our everyday.
      Christian: A different everyday.
Mary: What do you guys miss the most?
Christian: To see your friends and a more varied day, with longer periods where you can do sports and be active.
      Isabella: Yeah.
Christian: And do what I like.
Isabella: Well, I miss my friends and all that, but I think remote-teaching is pretty fun.
      Frederik: How about you Vincent?
Vincent: I think remote-teaching is really boring.
Frederik: *mumbles a response* and Josephine?
Josephine: I do facetime with all my friends.
      Mary: And that’s been good?
      Josephine: Yes.
Frederik: That you can facetime with them.
Frederik: That you can facetime with them? That's good to hear.
Frederik: We would like to adress a thank you to all of those who are working hard to get us all through this hard time.
Mary: Those of you who are in front, those who treat and provide care for those who need it.
Frederik: Those of you who are keeping our community in one piece and our primary functions. You are doing an indispensable job. Thank you very much for that.
Everyone: Take care of yourself and take care of each other.

Thank you so much P. Mary! I really appreciate the translation.
Now we know why everyone laughed at Vincent's comment, lol. The comments from the entire family are genuine and honest. May you and all of us be safe and kind through this challenging period.

    1. The Cambridges do things not much differently. The only thing is that they didn't speak directly to the people in a video message, but then - they're not yet in the Crown Prince position. So, I wouldn't compare, really.

  5. I am very proud of Mary, She took on a very big job. 4 lovely children and gets on with her Mother in law. Fredrick on the other hand needs to grow up and pull his weight. I believe he apparently had a bad accident which he needs to be doing exercises to help his mobility. Well Fredrick you ain't getting any younger and you are not dead so do the exercises and get on with it. Pull your weight. Mary had four children dont behave like her fifth. Your country needs you and surprisingly are devoted to the Danish Royal Family and in these very unsettled and trying times your understanding that your people are worried and frightened of these devasting in a lot of cases and, positiveness must be maintained. My hope is that unity be tight and kindness abound. Who knows for whom the bells toll. Stay well all and positive. Thinking of you all.

Unknown, me too. I admire her immensely, she is such a role model for me. I understand, she learned to speak in Danish, in a short time. And it could not have been easy. And yes, she's very popular in Denmark, she works harder than Frederick. And to be a loving, devoted wife, and mother, and taking on more work [after prince Hendrik's passing on]. And to balance this. So, I am so happy that she's basic also queen now, net to HM. She really earned it!

Dear Debbie Downer, I absolutely adore Crown Princess Mary and learning Danish is one of the hardest languages to learn and speak. In the midst of this horrible scourge you couldn't come up with something more positive to say....Really!

  10. This is a great video, thank you for translating. The CP is a inspiration. She has carried herself with dignity right from the start. Her work ethic is very admirable. She learnt the language early on, has been a great support to the Queen and her husband. She appears to be a wonderful mother. As a fellow Aussie we are very proud of her. Regardless as was mentioned that it is easy to hear she is not Danish, she speaks eloquently and profoundly. All class.

This is a wonderful video from the CP family. It's funny to see, at least to me, that Mary is more comfortable speaking in front of the camera than Frederik. I love they included the kids in their message and asked their opinions. Thanks for translating P. Mary! They all look wonderful and I hope they and Q. Margrethe will be ok. CP Mary will always be and continues to be my favorite royal! - Capt. Marvel
