Queen Mathilde of Belgium is attending the high-level week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, in her capacity as Advocate for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. During her stay in New York, Queen Mathilde paid tribute at the 9/11 Memorial on September 20, 2026, twenty-five years after the attacks on the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.
On September 20, 2026, Queen Mathilde of Belgium left her hotel on her way to her first meetings during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.

Queen Mathilde is looking chique and elegant in her black dress by Giorgio Armani. This is the style of dress in which I prefer the queen. So much better than shirt dresses with too long wide skirts, or in a two piece of skirt and jacket. Difficult to see what clutch she has with her and what shoes she is wearing.

DeleteThat´s a gorgeous dress, but does she really need to put a wreath there and do a lame pc photo op just before heading to the world´s power central that is the UN general assembly? If she really wanted to have an impact in the world - then visit Gaza. Or, as the Belgian queen, lay your wreath in Kongo with a sincere apology for colonial atrocoties.

DeleteVanessa, This is a fashion blog and not a political forum. The Congo, which belongs to Belgium‘s colonial history, is a complex issue and cannot be resolved by the queen, why bring it up, unless you want to discredit Mathilde?

DeleteIt is 25 years ago that the terroristic attacks on the Twin towers took place. Queen Mathilde is in NY since sunday for the UN general assembly. From another article in my regular press, I understood there were other countries who payed tribute to the 9/11 memorial. I am sure she just executed what the Belgian Government asked her to do or gave permission for : laying a flower wreath at the memorial. The Belgian tricolore was attached to the wreath, so it is the country which is represented there. It is not up to you to dictate what Queen Mathilde should do or not. She only can do for what the Belgian government give permission. In Belgium like in many European countries the king and the royal family must stay away from politics. Only when the government give permission to put a wreath, she can do this. She cannot visit Gaza if the government says her not to go there. As the Belgian queen she cannot lay a wreath in Congo either without permission. Colonial atrocities didn't only happen under a forefather of King Philippe in Congo, but under every king who had colonies in the 19th & 20th century in Africa and Asia. King Philippe and Queen Mathilde have been on state visit to Congo a couple of years ago and in his speeches the King made apologies. Are you also going to spell lessons to Queen Maxima who is also present in New York because she is also invited to go to the UN General Assembly ? Maybe she will not lay a wreath at the monument, but if her country The Netherlands are asking her to do so while she is there, she will do it. Are you also going to say to her that she should go to the former Dutch colonies in Indonesia and the Netherlands Antillen to lay a flower wreath ? Well, king Willem-Alexander also in his speech during state visits a couple of years ago made apologies for things that happened during the colonial time. You don't know the complete histories of countries like Belgium and The Netherlands, so keep your mouth shot before giving your comments.
I don't comment non fashion opinions but telling someone to keep their mouth shut while mouthing off your non fashion opinions is a bit much. Why don't you take your own advice? Apologies for centuries of theft, mass killings, hacking off limbs, and other atrocities. I find you group worse than bringing up non fashion comment. The black dress is nice.

I always appreciate Vanessa writing her thoughts. Indeed there is some redundancy in laying a wreath, versus going out to where a difference can be made. And I think this blog certainly has space for such comments.

DeleteI gave my fashion opinions in a separate comment already. Vanessa's comment made me so angry that I had to say what I have said. Insulting Queen Mathilde and King Philippe on a fashion blog is very low. They didn't live in that colonial period. You don't know how much the Belgians supported secretly Congo under King Baudouin before and after they became independant. But like often the support didn't always reach the people who needed it most.

How many times Queen Mathilde didn't went to Africa not only Congo to visit the projects of Belgian contractors who worked there to build better houses and bring water into the villages. Belgian agricultural specialists and bio-engineers went there to learn them how to coop with the bad harvests, due to bad water irrigation or not having the knowledge of how to manage an invasion of insects on their efforts in agriculture, etc. I also think this blog must have space to discuss such comments on one condition that people who wish to bring up subjects like this one which took place in the dark ages are studying first the real history of a country and not the history like it is written in the gutter press, which is usually false and not complete or not true.
@Vanessa: Go protest in front of the Royal Palace in person, not here and anonymously. How pathetic. No idea why the Admin chooses to include stuff like this too.

DeleteOn her way to the first meetings of the UN general Assembly one can see she is wearing a wine red lace skirt with a white shirt. Her red shoes are matching the red skirt. Apparently she is there together with Queen Maxima, but it is said that they don't always have much time to talk to each other. Sometimes they just sit down next to each other listening to the speeches they are interested in.

DeleteThe Armani dress is beautiful and classy, perfect fit and paired well with her shoes. Blouse and skirt seem to be the fashion which I like, especially with the red shoes. The length is perfect. Great choice for a meeting.
