On July 28, 2026, Crown Princess Kiko of Japan attended the Restart Postdoctoral Fellowship (RPD) Exchange Meeting at Meiji Kinenkan in Minato Ward, Tokyo. The Crown Princess met with researchers who had returned to research after taking time away due to childbirth or childcare. Crown Princess Kiko serves as an Honorary Specially Appointed Research Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), which runs the RPD program.

ReplyDeleteI think it’s a dress and a jacket. I find the jacket an all time classic design so I don’t think it looks dated. I like the full skirt of the dress (which I assume is sleeveless?) . Is it the material that looks dated to you or… ?

Delete22:49, yes the wide skirt is unusual (at least in this length, but again, the length is excellent for such a skirt, quite independently from fashion) , but I think very becoming for her lithe frame. And the perfectly fitting jacket is beautiful with it.
DeleteI don’t recall such full skirts in the 80s… but I was a student I guess! My first professional work outfits were early 90s with slimmer skirts. I spose fashion has limited creativity and recycle styles over and over. Some that we knew in our youth (maybe for you this skirt?) we can never stomach again!

ReplyDeleteI see nothing dated here at all, I find the jacket very becoming and the cut of the skirt with the arrangement of pleats very attractive. It is always interesting to give the outfits of the Japanese imperial family a closer look because they are very good at fabrics. I do miss a brooch, a regal touch.

Princess Kiki is impeccable, as always. If there was a prize for most impeccable (?*) she would win it, even with the very strong competition. * btw, does anyone know a collective term for the combined group consisting of the royals and the imperial and princely folk too? Is it monarchical?
ReplyDeleteWouldn’t the English term be: royalty? Imperial = of the empire, as in royal. Princely = a royal rank.
DeleteRoyalty = kingly (Roy meaning king), so the others are not royal. Imperial (emperor) is higher, and princely is lower and not royal unless an HRH through descent from a monarch, take for example the princes of Monaco or Lichtenstein who are princely but not royal unless by another route (Princess Caroline for instance married into the ex- royal family of Hanover so she and her daughter Alexandra use the royal titles associated with that family.)
