On May 27, 2026, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako hosted a state banquet in honor of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and First Lady Louise “Liza” Araneta Marcos during their state visit to Japan at the Hōmei-den Hall of the Imperial Palace.
Princess Aiko, Crown Prince Akishino, Crown Princess Kiko, Princess Kako, and other Imperial Family members were also present at the state banquet. Prince Hisahito attended an imperial banquet for the first time.
I love E.Masako's kimono. The pale blue/grey colour is perfect for a formal evening state dinner, and what looks to be hand painted flowers and plants are exquisite. One can also see a difference in the type of obi she is wearing, but I do not know the significance. I wish we had a better full length view of P.Aiko's kimono. All the Japanese men in tuxes including the young Prince Hisahito look very dashing.
ReplyDeleteFull credit as well to the Filipino First Couple. The president wearing traditional Barong shirt, and the First Lady wearing a Terno with the elevated callado sleeves. They look very dignified, and the white colour adds to the formality of the occasion. They look very good too.

That is such interesting information about the Hosoge pattern in gold and silver, as well as the Saga Nishiki handbag of the First Lady, gifted by the Empress. I have explored further into the Hosoge pattern and have discovered that not only is it prized on fabric and textiles, but also in other art mediums, such as paintings and furniture. I'm now going to keep my eyes open to see if I spot any more of it elsewhere.
DeleteAlso, the Saga Nishiki technique of brocade is a work of art. Not only does it involve the use of gilded paper, but it requires great time and patience and only a few centimetres are produced each day. It is certainly a precious art form. Thank you again.

Lovely to see them in national dress. I like the white dress, would like it better without those sleeves. The kimonos are so exquisite, great family support.

Beautiful kimonos. President Ferdinand Marcus Jr. brings back memories of his father and First lady Imelda. Nice to see so many of the Japanese Imperial family there. I do like Mrs Marcus gown but could do without the shape of the sleeves.

Wonderful seeing other Filipina ladies at the dinner wearing smart dresses with the traditional terno sleeve. (How anyone, such as Anon 06:41 above can acknowledge that the sleeve is part of a traditional garment, and then say that the garment would be lovely by the lack of such a sleeve is beyond shameful and ridiculous. You don't speak like that about a country's national costume.)

Yes Anon 13:44, P.Kako's yellow and green kimono was really beautiful. I like how the colours were combined around the neck. You say that her sister P.Mako was there at the dinner? I would have liked to see her but I didn't notice her there. Perhaps she was seated in another part of the room since I believe that she is not considered to be part of the Imperial family now. I heard that she had a baby in New York.

The Empress Kimono is absolutely stunning, what a gorgeous creation, pale blue background color, the painted plants and flowers, exquisite. What beautiful workmanship, so well crafted. Princess Aiko looks gorgeous.
