On February 20, 2026, Queen Sofía of Spain was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in recognition of her support for social, welfare, and humanitarian initiatives. The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, also known as the ULPGC, is a Spanish public university located in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Wearing an academic gown and cape, Queen Sofía received from the Rector of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Lluís Serra, the doctoral diploma and the symbols accompanying the degree: the laurelled biretta, the Book of Knowledge, the ring used to sign and seal official opinions and consultations, and the white gloves symbolizing purity. Finally, the Queen took the oath and was presented with the university medal.
