On February 19, 2026, Queen Sofía of Spain was presented with the “Gorilla Award” awarded by the Loro Parque Foundation for her exemplary and sustained dedication to the conservation of biodiversity, animal welfare, and the protection of natural heritage. Upon her arrival at the Poema del Mar Aquarium, Queen Sofía was welcomed by the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo.

The event was presided over by the President of the Government of the Canary Islands in a ceremony that brought together more than 250 guests, including authorities, scientists, institutional representatives, and Foundation collaborators. This award, created by Wolfgang Kiessling, President of the Loro Parque Group, recognizes individuals and institutions with outstanding records in promoting sustainable development models.
