On January 6, 2026, King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark hosted the 2026 New Year’s Levée at Christiansborg Palace, following the New Year’s Court (Nytårskur) and New Year’s receptions held at Christian VII’s Palace in Amalienborg and at Christiansborg Palace. For the occasion, Queen Mary wore a gold brocade dress from the American luxury brand Teri Jon.

Queen Mary wore a diamond brooch that forms the central element of Queen Louise of Sweden’s Engagement Bracelet, along with Queen Lovisa’s Engagement Bracelet. She also wore the Sash and Star of the Order of the Elephant, King Frederik X’s Portrait Order, and the Badge of the Order of the Dannebrog. Both bracelets are part of the Danish Royal Household’s entailed property (Løsørefideikommis).

Additionally, Queen Mary wore the diamond earrings of Anne of Orange — a pair of 18th-century earrings featuring a large diamond with a hanging pendant below, a so-called “pendeloque,” set with a pear-shaped diamond. The earrings once belonged to Princess Anne of Orange, born in 1709 as a princess of England and later married to William of Orange.

Beautiful gown! The gold/metallic threading on the organza is gorgeous and especially love that it stops to leave a border of white organza at the bottom. Gowns where all the skin is covered (higher neck, long sleeves, full length) can be very matronly, but the small gap in the neckline helps as does the updo to allow the neck to show. And thank goodness she didn’t wear the belt!!

17:45 interesting thoughts and I enjoyed reading your perspective. I think a gown which covers all skin isn’t matronly (which is a negative fashion word) but rather less commonly seen these days so considered old fashioned and unfortunately labelled matronly. When what it can be is, like this, a beautiful gown covering all skin! After your belt comment I reconsidered the model version of the gown and found myself loving the original version with collar and waist tie which I find works even better for the heavy material. That said, when Mary will wear this gown with a lot of extra decoration, having it as simple as possible works better for her purposes. She’d look brilliant in either version!

What a beautiful dress. It seems to me that it might be a re-wear as I recall seeing it before, and I'm happy to see it again. Mary looks lovely.

    1. You are right Anon 9:13, it's a re-wear. She wore it in 2024 in Greenland and the second time in New Year's Levée 2025. A very beautiful gown which suits her perfectly. Her hair is in a beautiful bun and I love her jewelry.
I can't even imagine how upset they must be because of the threats against Greenland, or well... our eastern neighbor isn't very nice either 😉

A Happy New Year to you, Zucchina.
Thank you for confirming that the dress is indeed a re-wear, and for describing Mary's look so well. She got it right from head to toe, including all the interesting jewellery.
Yes, sadly these are very troubling times for all of us (Canada included, and for you in Finland too), but especially for Denmark given the Greenland situation. One can only hope that better sense prevails soon, and that we will all make it through the year safely.

A rewear of this stunningly beautiful dress complemented by the beautiful diamond earrings. Mary looks wonderful. On a lesser note, Frederick looks disengaged and not even a little happy. Unfortunately the royal couple are not at all in sync with each other.

Frederik looks a bit ill to my eyes -- and, on the other hand, the situation in world politics is sadly a very serious one at the moment, especially from a Danish perspective. (And from a global perspective as well.)

Hi--I saw pics of the couple on other sites and King Frederik is laughing and smiling both with his wife and his guests. I think the photos used here are ones in which Frederik is looking serious about his duty, focused on being respectful of his role and duty. Janet

18:18 never forget that a photo is a microsecond in time. We all have more “off” photos that great ones. So you nor I not the King can be judged as disengaged from a couple of pics! He takes his role very seriously and is highly unlikely to be disengaged, but as a human can also have a moment of tiredness, thoughtfulness (he has to speak … rehearsing his speech), nervousness, listening, waiting, etc.

What a beautiful colour for her, but what about the trench coats??? On a gala dress? And then not even wearing it properly, with her arms not in the sleeves. No, this is a miss for me. Luckily, Máxima is not wearing this, because she would have been torn apart by everyone. Fortunately, Máxima does not wear something like this over a gala gown.

This is not a trench coat but a high quality wool coat. I don’t know where you live but here it’s really cold. So she needed something over her dress.
Apart from that in the European counties I’ve been in it’s customary for lady’s of higher classes and in evening attire to not put the arms inside the coat. It would ruin the dress, the jewellery might get stuck and the overall appearance would be negatively affected.
      Hope that helps.

Not a trench coat but a beautiful cream wool garment. Not sure about where you live 19:23 but what we Europeans do when cold, and yes maybe it’s a bit unacceptable, but we do what’s called “ putting on a warm coat” when we are outside, for instance leaving a warm vehicle and having to walk across a cold courtyard. Apologies on behalf of we cold people who sometimes are only temporarily cold so we prop a coat over our shoulders then it’s easy to shrug off a few minutes later once inside. We call this “normal” and “sensible” and don’t mean to offend those who know better than us about what we should wear when we feel cold.

Hi both, In my opinion, this is precisely what detracts from the overall look.

It’s perfectly understandable to want something warm, but in that case a beautiful cape would have been far more appropriate, that is what true elegance calls for. Alternatively, a coat that reaches the ground would have worked much better.

With their budget, one would assume a stunning cape or stole could easily have been afforded. To my eye, this coat looks like an afterthought.

This is purely my personal opinion, as I completely understand the desire to stay warm — but if you do, then do it beautifully.

  5. The typical events for re-wears, as Queen Margrethe II made it a habit. On a totally different note, but also kind of responding to Anon18:18 - King Frederik looks like he hasn't slept for days, and there seem to be grave reasons for it.

QM wore this dress last year, but chose to wear it with a white roller neck jumper under it,which I felt spoilt the look. This version is much better. It looks like HM has had the dress modified from its original version with the collar and tie waist being removed, again, I feel this is a better option on her.
I love that QM is happily bringing out jewellery from the vaults and breathing new life into them. The earrings are weighty in both history as well as carats.

Stunning!!! Queen Mary looks beautiful in this golden gown. I love how she uses jewels from the vault--some of the oldest jewels in the collection--to amplify her sparkle. This gown is very beautiful--and I love how Mary has had the gown redesigned from the original style (I never liked the style of the collar). This redesigned gown is now regally elegant. Mary's New Year looks this year have been fabulous!

I’m in the minority. It’s a no for me. I like it better on the models shown. I don’t like the bun either. I’m going to look for her earlier wear.

Had to chuckle at someone’s comment above admonishing Mary for daring to wear a coat when cold! The cheek of the lady eh? … But actually it does worry me to read people’s comments who forget that these public figures are HUMAN and can have a moment of cold or tiredness, sickness or tuning out. We cannot expect public figures to be perfect and tear them apart when we judge them as less than perfect. Unfair and terrible pressure on them! Seeing these photos of their lives is such a privilege but represents a tiny moment of their lives!

      Hello, @Ava.
I agree on Q.Mary's natural makeup though I wonder whether it might be due to the lighting in the hall or to the use of a lighter foundation.
I'm personally testing the Armani skin tint as of late and I can assure it makes wonders.
New skin tint formulas can be lightweight while still keeping the skin comfortably hydrated, glowy and even thanks to a blurring effect.
I just fix it with very little powder.
Skin tints are mostly used for daytime makeup but it is up to the wearer to prefer a teint over a more classic foundation according to the skin texture and needs.
Mary's manicure Is perfection, great nail polish shade.
Her up style hair tops off this divine gala dress.
      Jewellery is jaw- dropping.
      Hugs!!!

This is a beautiful dress for an ice princess! The fabric has an interesting texture with sparkling and matte elements. However, this can quickly appear overdone, especially when paired with jewellery. Personally, I think there are other dresses that suit Queen Mary better and emphasise her grace even more.

Unlike the Dutch or the Swedish RF, she's not presented with easy jewels to wear. So many of the jewels are centuries old and also individual pieces that need to be smartly matched with outfits. Mary does a stellar job of it. Kudos for wearing lesser known jewels with such aplomb. I cant wait to see what she does with the 8 floral brooches that are all identical. I would have imagined she would put that on a frame but apparently not.

I prefer the original design with the collar and belt. Perhaps this alteration is so these types of earrings can be worn. Collars finish a garment and frames the face.imo
