On January 18, 2026, Japanese Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, and their daughter Princess Aiko visited the Ryōgoku Kokugikan in Tokyo to watch the bouts on the eighth day of the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament. The Imperial family were welcomed by Japan Sumo Association President Hakkaku. The Imperial-viewing Grand Sumo Tournament was held for the first time in six years.
For the occasion, Princess Aiko wore a pink furisode kimono, the same one she wore at her graduation ceremony from Gakushuin University. A furisode, known for its long swinging sleeves, is the most formal style of kimono traditionally worn by young unmarried women in Japan. Empress Masako wore a lavender-colored hōmongi, a semi-formal kimono.
Beautiful. Both mother and daughter look exquisite in their kimonos. I like how the Empress has picked up the gold thread in her kimono and matched it to her clutch. So elegant.

I prefer the kimono of the Empress than the one worn by Princess Aiko. I am always wondering how they can breath in such a kimono with the sort of belt on their chest. The Sumo wrestlers are not shown here, lucky for me. I have always find it an unpleasant sport to look at.

At first glance you might think it's just two fat guys fighting but there is a lot of skill, technique, and mental strategy involved. The intricacies of the sport along with the long held traditions, ceremony, and decipline, is what I enjoy most the most. Being a true rikishi (professional Japanese sumo wrestler) is almost a religious calling. I always tell people it's not about their size. It's about tenique, skill, and their individual fighting spirit. Also, I've heard that if a rikishi visits your town it is a sign of good luck. :)

ردحذف@Anonymous 23:44 -- the entire ensemble of the kimono (there's several layers) make you kinda feel like a walking paper towel tube. The obi isn't super tight and for me, didn't affect my breathing, and I have asthma. The tightness of all the underlayers, as a I said, there's several layers to a formal kimono, felt more restrictive overall. Not enough that I would not wear one again. I watched this live on NKH World. They mentioned that the Princess has been a Sumo fan since a child and they said she was taking notes during the competetion. :D When they got ready to leave everyone in the audience stood up and applauded and waved at them with big smiles on their faces. It was very sweet.
