On January 1, 2026, King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark hosted the New Year’s reception and banquet for the government, representatives of official Denmark, and the Royal Court at Christian VII’s Palace at Amalienborg. In addition to the King and Queen, Crown Prince Christian, Queen Margrethe, Prince Joachim, Princess Marie, and Princess Benedikte were also in attendance.
Queen Mary wore a gown by Jesper Høvring, the Diamond Bandeau Tiara and Diamond Earrings from the Danish Crown Jewels, as well as the Collar and Star of the Order of the Elephant. Queen Margrethe II wore the Nassut Tiara, together with the Collar and Star of the Order of the Elephant.
Princess Marie wore the Mauboussin Nuit Claire Tiara and her sapphire earrings, as well as the Collar and Star of the Order of the Elephant. Princess Benedikte wore the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg Fringe Tiara, and bracelets created from her diamond sautoir, along with the Collar and Star of the Order of the Elephant.
Among the guests who attended the New Year’s reception were Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Ministers Sophie Løhde, Stephanie Lose, Ane Halsboe-Jørgensen, Christina Egelund, Mette Kierkgaard, Marie Bjerre, Sophie Hæstorp Andersen, and Caroline Stage Olsen.
Also in attendance were Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office Barbara Bober Bertelsen, Lord Mayor of the City of Copenhagen Sisse Marie Welling, and lady-in-waiting to Princess Benedikte, chamberlainess Countess Mette Ahlefeldt-Laurvig.
Happy to see Prince Joachim and looks like a rewear for Pr. Marie The dress is fine and I do like the tiara. Princess Benedikte looks good my favorite dress. She brought out the amethysts. Wide eyed viewing those earrings on Queen Mary. Don’t know why but I’m not loving this dress. No reason in particular.

حذفIt may be because Mary's dress is a "re-work/redo." The waist and skirt are from a previous "dress" with this lace and crystal top being new. Since this "dress" is essentially a "cut and paste" that might be why its making some feel it's a little "off." Not bad or ugly, just not quite ... right.

Wow. Princess Benedikte dress has a very interesting visual seam across the front. I like Mary’s dress in that the lace is exquisite and beautiful but can’t help thinking she will remove the lace and wear as a sleeveless in the future. Christian is very handsome in formal wear as is the king. Queen Margrethe lovely in coral, and princess Marie perfect.

ردحذفBest dressed -- Queen Margrethe. Her coral gown suits her colouring perfectly, has wonderful details, and looks extra amazing with her gold accessories. So great to see the gorgeous golden poppies tiara again!
ردحذفQueen Mary: The addition of the lacy Edwardian high collar and puffy sleeves has a romantic vintage vibe, the sort which would bring a dreamy fairytale aura to Princes Catherine, but is less intuitive on Mary, who I feel shone best in this gown's 2017 original classic simple lines. I also feel that the enormous earrings need to be paired with a much larger tiara, in order to create a balanced effect.
Princess Benedikte: Great colour, fabric texture and overall shape, especially the narrow skirt. Some changes to the bodice would make this gown even more special.
Princess Marie: Appropriate, business-like, neutral and lowkey, as expected.
Sorry, but this is the Naasut Tiara on Queen Margrethe, not the Golden Poppies.

I just told another lady in her 40s (like me): Simple lines and solid colors with more coverage on the body just works better for most women (there are women with certain personalities that can handle loud clothing). The older you get, classic lines keeps you looking classy. Hence, Marie is perfect.

I don’t think Margrethe’s yellow gold tiara looks particularly good with her hair color; perhaps it would look better against dark hair.

ردحذفQueen Mary: Her Majesty looks stunning here. While I'm not the biggest fan of the sleeves I do like the bodice and skirt. The Diamond Bandeau tiara was a good choice given that she is wearing an embellished dress.
Queen Margrethe: We can't see much of her dress due to her fur coat, but the color is nice. The Nassut tiara is a tough one to wear but I think the queen pulls it off well.
Princess Marie: I glad we got to see the princess wearing the Mauboussin Nuit Claire tiara again, we haven't seen it in a while. It matches perfectly with her sapphire earrings. My only critique would be her dress. I wish she would wear something else for this event.
Princess Benedikte: Her amethyst necklace matches perfectly with her gown. Her Royal Highness is such a classy lady.

The re wear of this skirt combined with the lace blouse looks stunning. The gown, has lovely swish and movement, glided as she walked. She looked ever so elegant. (I'm not sure if it is two piece or a gown) I love how she remodels her ensembles. The jewels were stunning, the diamond earrings are a brilliant size. Princess Marie looks lovely, the blue velvet gown looks gorgeous. Love the small evening clutch. Her diamond and pearl ring is beautiful.

ردحذفWow - the stuff of fairy princesses and fairytales! Absolutely stunning all ladies shown here and all the other female guests I saw arrive via the tv coverage. I found Marie particularly elegant as she arrived and I was so glad to see her and Joachim back for this! Christian, Mary and Frederik were superbly elegant, Mary’s dress and jewel choices being absolute perfection in my (fairytale) book!

Love her choice of jewels - any larger tiara would have been too much i think given the choice of highly embellished dress. The gold fabric doesn’t show to so well in the photos but in the videos is just stunning. A golden queen, and the way she moves and holds herself, her confidence .., 100% the queen.

ردحذفWOW, They are early to start the new working year. In most European countries January 1st is an official holiday. Except from hospitals, ambulances, fire men, rescue services, etc... This year the weekend will start tonight so before monday people will not really work yet.
ردحذفFashionwise there is no dress which is really special. The collar and star decoration ruin the dresses and are not matching the diamond tiara's and necklaces, bracelets, etc... The only royal who is better dressed than the others is Princess Benedikte but why she is wearing a necklace with dark stones which does not match the rest. If her dress would have another brighter color she would be amazing. Queen Mary's dress gives me the impression of a remake. An older silk dress to which new lace is added ? Maybe it is a complete new dress, but it is how I see it.

حذفLe tissu satiné couleur champagne est très beau, délicat et raffiné, mais je n'ai pas l'impression que le chemisier en dentelle et paillettes soit une bonne idée, un peu "victorien" peut-être. Les poignets ouvragés sont cependant magnifiques.

Et sinon, comme d'habitude, les colliers et les médailles de toutes surchargent trop les tenues, c'est dommage. Même impression sur les uniformes des hommes qui sont déjà bien assez remplis de boutons, ceinture, col brodé, etc. Que de complications ! ;-)

ردحذفCompletely stunning Mary. The skirt is a gorgeous one and I’m so glad to see her use it multiple times, always varying the top. This is truly romantically beautiful with the beading and golden threads, and the tiara is absolutely stunning. To look at the tiara in the cabinet is to see an incredible gold tiara - perfectly suited to the dress - whereas in the photos with the flashes the tiara appears silvery. I also love Marie in navy blue and her tiara is beautiful on her. I’m glad they have made their own Washington DC life but I do miss seeing them as we used to !

Es würde auch nicht wirklich zu ihnen passen, sie haben immer ihre persönliche Ausstrahlung da ist alles äußerliche absolut nur unnötige Garnitur. Oftmals ist einfach weniger besser als mehr ; ) Alle weiteren Personen sehen gekleidet aus, sie alle hatten sicher einen wundervollen Abend.

Christian is so very handsome all dressed up. Via live tv I saw him arrive alone in a car and walk across the crowd and journalists to the door. Very confident and warm as his father is. His parents must be so proud! They looked a million dollars too. Was great fun seeing all the clothes of their guests. Everyone without exception looked wonderful and had obviously put so much effort into their preparation. Then came stunning Marie, impossibly beautiful. And golden Mary to top it all off!

ردحذفThe earrings are next level. I read they’re a combination of two earrings in the set. I love that about QM she knows how to wear and appreciate the jewels in the vaults.
QM2- As always elegant. I can’t quite make out the color,but it looks like a warm coral color.
PM - She has had the train on the dress shortened, since the last wear. The color of the dress works well with the tiara,I wish she’d have worn her hair up. Not a fan of the royal ladies wearing their hair down at tiara events.

I have nothing against rewearing or remaking clothes, but here I found it too visible. From the first glimpse on the picture, I asked myself immediately : Is it a remake ? If it is done like it should be it cannot be visible. Sometimes it is better to wear a dress just like it is and wear it one more time than change something or adding or taking away something. The changes are not always making it look better.
ردحذفI keep thinking that it would work better if the lace top covered the top of the dress all the way down to the waist. It would look less as a remake. The lace is lovely but I don´t like the tucked in look.

حذفWow!!! The ladies of the Danish Royal Family all look fabulous here. Queen Mary looks stunning. I love her reworking of her gown and the lace of the top is so elegant. Her choice of the diamond bandeau tiara is perfect with this gown as the gown's top has a lot going on and simple bling was called for. The earrings seem to have become a favorite of hers from the Royal Collection and are so beautiful. Queen Margrethe looks marvelous in her coral gown with the Greenlandic tiara--the gold tiara is a great match for the warm tones of HM's gown. Princess Marie looks lovely--her choice of a blue velvet gown to pair with the diamond and sapphire tiara is excellent. I wish she had worn her hair up as I feel it adds a touch of elegance. Her gown is beautiful. Princess Benedikte is flawlessly elegant! I love her brocade gown and those amethysts are so beautiful. HM and CP Christian are fairytale level handsome! I also think Joachim looks wonderful in glasses. All of the ladies photographed (the guests) look wonderful in their gowns. It must have been spectacular inside the dining hall!

I like many of their dresses better than those of the royal ladies (of course, the non-royals did not have to choose dresses that would work with the challenging, large chain of the Order of the Elephant).

I want to like Mary’s dress. Love the lace, love the satin, it just seems disconnected somehow. Perhaps it is the fullness and cuffs of the sleeves that I love, but seem out of place. Perhaps it is the high neck, again I like it but it just seems off. Perhaps in person with the sparkle of the lace and light reflecting on the skirt, it loves wonderful.

حذفI find Queen Mary’s breathtaking gown exquisite in every respect — one of her most beautiful looks ever (and that is certainly saying something). There are some photos in which the lighting gives the lace a golden tone that adds even more richness to the overall glow; I wonder if that is a more accurate representation than the photos in which there is more of a tonal contrast. Either way, this gown enchants me. Jewelry-wise, the tiara and earrings are perfect but I do wish that Mary could have gotten away with just wearing the Order of the Elephant chain and pendant, as they complement the lines of the gown simply and elegantly — but I guess the star must always be paired with the chain and pendant, and I assume that the other decorations, too, were probably mandatory. (There are others here who are well-versed in the proper wearing of ceremonial decorations; I am not.) — Jane
ردحذفThe bodice of Mary’s gown gives me dirndle vibes in most, though not all the pictures. I think the color is dreamy and the fabric of the skirt is scrumptious, but overall, I don’t t think it was successful. I’m more of a fan of Benedikte’s gown. The lines are clean, the fit beautiful and modern.

Margarethe, not fond of the salmon gown, nor white shoes underneath, nor the gold headdress. Too much going on with her entire outfit. The fur coat was rather disgusting to be honest.
Mary, not fond of her put-together looked. The lace bit at the top appears to have been added as an afterthought, does not go well with the rest of the gown. She has done too much with her face, it looks too puffy. ages her a great deal.
Fred, needs to trim the beard, or get rid of it. He looks scruffy, and rather odd with all the medals pinned to his chest.
The son looks handsome.
All of the invited guests/women looked terrific with their varied gowns. More impressed with them, than what the royals were wearing.
Agree about Mary….her hairstyle gives her a matronly look and all the fillers and enhancements make her look older than she is. I’m sure I’ll be crucified for that by Mary sugars…

Basically, I think there are substancial differences between these two gown types, which might account for the different designs, sizing and overall effect on each single lady.
A simple example could be Queen Mary's champagne coloured ball gown vs Pss Marie's evening dress (which features the most modern twist imo, that is the blazer cut bodice).
A non- royal example of ball gown is the splendid emerald green off- the- shoulders satin dress with a side train , simply magnificent (Pic 16).

I was simply suggesting (easy to understand!) that all the royals and non royal ladies might have wanted to adhere to the basic guidelines for each of their chosen outfits, the more so given the utter formality of this event.

You can see that I didn't even object to your way of critiquing some royals as other commenters rightly did though I too had a right to do so.
I know what manipulating others' words means as someone used this subtle and clumsy way of alterating my own words sometimes to fit her own narrative.

Not sure what TDS is. I agree no trolls but find the odd political comment very much in keeping with the world of the royals. When there’s a terrible and dangerous leader threatening countries that are peaceful we should speak up. Indeed read or listen to King Frederik’s New Year speech which speaks very specifically about the threat of several of the current warmongering world leaders. It’s a fantastic speech and also poetic! Absolutely worth taking the time to listen.
