The Kingdom of Bhutan celebrated the 118th National Day in Bumthang. Bumthang is one of the 20 dzongkhag (districts) comprising Bhutan. King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Queen Jetsun Pema and their three children Prince Jigme Namgyel, Prince Ugyen, Princess Sonam Yangden and other members of the royal family attended the celebrations that took place at the historic Lingkathang of the Wangduechhoeling Palace grounds.
Thousands of people from Bumthang and other parts of Bhutan joined the celebrations, along with the Prime Minister, government officials, and foreign dignitaries and guests. In 1907, Gongsar Wangchuk was crowned as the first king of a united Bhutan. The national day has been celebrated in the country since then.

DeleteWonder if they wear these type of clothes every day.
ReplyDeleteI've seen pictures of them wearing jeans.
DeleteThe Bhutanese people are required to wear traditional clothing daily unless they wear a uniform for work. However, when they travel outside the country, the royal family can and does wear Western clothing.
DeleteI have just visited Bhutan. The National dress is worn to work by all people - and they wear more western dress in their free time, but many still wear National dress all the time - of course in much simpler, more practical fabrics, but they do all look absolutely wonderful. lRB
