On the occasion of the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, Queen Mary of Denmark visited Cairo, the capital of Egypt, from 1–2 November 2025. On Saturday, 1 November, heads of state from around the world gathered to attend the opening ceremony of the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Queen Mary was received by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi of the Arab Republic of Egypt at the Presidential Palace in Cairo.

The museum, which houses more than 50,000 artifacts — including the 83-ton statue of Ramses II and the burial mask of Tutankhamun — was created as a tribute to history and world heritage. During the visit, The Queen was accompanied by Denmark’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lars Løkke Rasmussen. Together, Her Majesty and the Minister began their visit with a reception hosted by the Danish Ambassador in Cairo.

Queen Mary also visited the iconic monuments — the Pyramids and the Sphinx of Giza — the largest of which, the Great Pyramid, remains the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing. The Giza pyramid complex contains a total of nine pyramids. The Queen concluded her visit with a guided tour of the Grand Egyptian Museum, where Tutankhamun’s burial mask is among the many unique artifacts on display.

Beautiful white dress, but I like her best in the simple blue cotton shirt. Aside from lovely Queen Mary, does this event sound strange to others: “heads of state from around the world gathered to attend the opening ceremony of the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo”…. why I wonder? It is not normal that taxes around the world send our leaders for a museum opening! I would say no to my taxes being used for that and also want to know the other agendas for the visit.

No, it does not sound strange. The world's history is being preserved and displayed. Who better to draw attention to the need to preserve these antiquities for future generations than world leaders? To understand the present and to better shape the future, we study the past. The hope is that we will not repeat the mistakes made by previous generations. Learning about civilizations other than our own (both historically and in the present) leads to better understanding. Continued conflict destroys people and our planet. Every little act toward a greater appreciation for other nations needs to be applauded. Without everyone coming together for the greater good, future generations would have little to look forward to.

I would expect that the host country, Egypt, would be paying for all or most of the trip. This is a huge project for them, and expected to bring the country $billions in tourist revenue. By inviting well known guests from around the world, they guarantee publicity for the project and for tourisim.

Yes I agree it’s strange. Having some visitors is one thing, but world leaders, to a museum opening? Unlike someone’s suggestion above I doubt Egypt would be paying as they don’t have the finances to do so. Strange indeed.

Without the ancient Egyptians, the pharaos (who were also the kings in that period), the Greek and the Roman civilizations our world would have looked completely different. If you are invited your pay for your ticket and not your host. If a king or a president is travelling to another country for a state visit or an economic mission he takes a plane of his country for which he pays or not to fly to the town where the visit starts. A king or queen of a country is a representative or an ambassador for his country. If you are worried you have to pay for that as a tax payer, one can as well lock everyone up who has to do business in other countries. There would be less traffic and it would be better for the climate. But the world's economy, business and finance system doesn't work like that. It is often after a state visit that a country can do business with an other country. The king's, princes, etc... are meeting each other and often they are the first contact of one country with another in case business contacts have to be realized. Isn't it better that in a world like we live for the moment people of different countries can work together instead of fighting each other ? If you can do business with another country it is always better for your own country. Who know's that you might need the help of that other country in case of a conflict ?

  3. Très élégant chemisier dont la couleur Bordeaux se retrouve judicieusement parmi les motifs de sa jupe ; de plus, j'adore sa ceinture très bien choisie !

  4. There is a lot of outfits for this event! The skirt worn with the lovely Jesper Hovring top is very colorful and bold but it's not my taste. I can't see the print clearly but it looks like it has the Sphinx at the top which is kind of neat. I've never liked lacey, white dresses because they look too much like wedding gowns. The best item shown here is the simple, classic RL denim shirt.

On picture N° 6 on the right, I see King Philippe of Belgium next to King Felipe of Spain. In the middle I see Prime Minister Bart De Wever of Belgium. At first this visit was announced in the agenda of Queen Mathilde too, but it dissappeared again. Maybe Queen Mathilde had other occupations. Besides she and her daughter CP Elisabeth visited the places to be seen in the Valley of the King's, the cities of Luxor and Cairo a couple of years ago. King Philippe's great grandmother Queen Elisabeth (wife of King Albert I) was present when the coffin of Tuthankamun was discovered and opened for the first time. The Belgian building company BESIX is the main contractor of this new complex, the company builded also very high buildings in Abu Dhabi and other countries in the Arabic world.

Add Queen Rania, Princess Salma, Prince Albert and many more world leaders. Theses countries and people most likely contributed to the museum

I like all four of Mary's outfits. The Hoevring top with colourful skirt are a rewear I believe, and they look as good now as before. My favourite is the Zimmerman top and skirt. I like the square style of the neck and shoulders because where with any other fabric it might have looked look boxy, here it is softened by the open lacework which I think might be Guipure. All the photos regardless of what she is wearing are very beautiful and artistic.

  8. The burgundy blouse and gorgeous colored skirt, what a beautiful ensemble. Love the colors of the skirt, this is very becoming, the rich burgundy color is a good choice. Love the color of her shoes. The white lace dress is beautiful and suits her well. She looks well groomed and attired in both ensembles.

All of QM chosen outfits are perfect. The Zimmerman two piece in a new acquisition. Subtle run of light blue/green hue, really elevates the two piece.
I’m not overly keen on QR dress. The front part of the dress looks like it has a sporran like drape. If the dress was without that element it for me would have looked lovely. QR certainly has the figure to wear a dress like this. Salam too looks pretty.

The white lace ensemble is too long. On pic. N° 4 the hemline of the white top she is wearing under the lace top is too much visible. Under these lace clothes it is best to wear skin coloured underwear which is less visible.

Queen Mary looks wonderful with sleek hair. First two photos are so beautiful of her, love the burgundy blouse and skirt.
