I love the idea of these cool sneakers and crazy red tights - had she paired them with say a black dress, could have been a fun outfit. However I think for such a highly coloured dress the only possible shoes are white sneakers or nude heels/flats.

She is making good publicity for these Belgian Goods but the combination of the dress and the sneakers (and red panty hose) is all wrong. I suppose she did it for fun. In her daily life she is such a classic lady but here she seems to like wearing these clothes and have great fun like a child who is taking clothes of her mother or big sister to play with.

    1. It’s just like a selection from a dressing up box. I’ve nothing against red tights but worn with a plain black dress and black courts. These trainers would be ugly even with jeans. I do like Princess Astrid but this is a mess.

    2. I don't know how much of a classic lady she is. She does show up at events wearing... interesting things. Remember she wore a bright green dress with feathery sleeves to her daughter (Maria-Laura's) wedding a few years ago. It looked like she strangled a Fraggle on the way to the church!

Here in southwestern Germany, we call it the “Saarland Edict of Tolerance” (loosely based on Immanuel Kant) when people there comment on what is actually bad taste in a friendly way, saying, “Well, it's something different!”

I don't like the red tights with either pair of shoes. I find them distracting. I think it would have looked better with a nude leg.

“A nude leg”? And what would she have done with the other leg? ;-)

I like her earrings picks up the fern theme. I think she had fun wearing this combination, very brave of her. I just hope her 1/2 sisters eclectic style is not influencing her.

Only a few here seem to understand she is wearing this dress and these shoes because they are Belgian products which she is asked to promote. She would never wear these garments together in real life.

Thank you for the explanation, Anonymous at 19:39 — I was wondering why on earth she had chosen those tights and those shoes. I feel very sorry for her if this is what is expected of her in her role. We have often seen royal ladies dressed — by their own choice — differently than we would like them to, but this is beyond belief. Poor Astrid.

But she isn't poor Astrid she laughs and she is having fun. What is she supposed to do ? Maybe she received the dress as a present. She puts the dress on before visiting the different Belgian companies. When arriving at Oddo's she is asked what she thinks of the shoes. I can see it as if I was there too. She takes the shoes and she is trying them on. In the meantime the camera's are taking pictures and the comments can begin.
If she was a man to lead this economic mission, they would have hired a model to show the dress and the shoes.

On former economic missions, Princess Astrid was tasting Belgian beer and eating Belgian "patisserie". Did she also receive the same comments like now ? I can't remember. Anyway she is doing this work with a big smile. Maybe in the near future when CP Elisabeth will take over from her aunt (Princess Astrid isn't become any younger) you can make fun of her. And what if Queen Mathilde is paying a working visit to foreign countries and she is receiving from the local people in Africa or Asia a self made crown and necklace to welcome her. She is also smiling and must stay serious at the same time. Do you also comment her outfit then the same way you are commenting Princess Astrid ?

  10. She must be promoting products maybe? The dress is colorful. Love her earrings, they are of substance.

Faire de la promo c'est bien mais de là à s'habiller comme un clown je n'adhère pas du tout à cette idée.

She’s lovely but this outfit is too much of everything….

  13. Is she kidding? This isn't the 70's. It seems the firework went off. She is a Royal not a hippy. Don't know if this word is still used today, it may be outdated.
