On the evening of October 27, 2025, King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima and the Princess of Orange, Crown Princess Catharina-Amalia, attended the National Celebration of Amsterdam’s 750th Anniversary at the Museumplein in Amsterdam. Before the concert began, the King and Queen, together with the Princess of Orange, spoke with several residents of Amsterdam who had made a special contribution during the city’s jubilee year.
Princess Amalia wore a green gown featuring a peacock-eye pattern, originally belonging to her grandmother, Princess Beatrix, for this special occasion. Princess Beatrix first wore the dress, designed by fashion designer Theresia Vreugdenhil, during the State Visit to Belgium in 1981. Queen Máxima later wore the same gown in 2014 for the 5 May Liberation Concert.

ReplyDeleteBoth Maxima and Amalia look lovely here. The colours suit each of them beautifully, and Maxima's statement necklace provides focus when no other jewellery adorns her outfit. But the best part is to see this one green dress worn by three generations of women in the family at different times. To me that's rather special.

ReplyDeleteIt sure does look as good as new. I have a few clothing items from my grandmums and aunts from years gone by that I love. It always makes me giggle when I wear such a piece and someone asks where I bought - I always reply it is a hand me down form 19xy year.

Now that’s a rewear!!! 3 generations of dress wearing! This is what I would love to always see … that money be really well spent on garments, and that they be really well used. The landfill problem plus plastic pollution of modern fashion is appalling and this shows a very small example of having something really special and caring for it and passing it down. I love Maxima’s hair styling and the outfit colour for her is excellent… the jewellery is outrageously exaggerated .., and suits her superbly!

DeleteThis clothing industries are mostly in very poor countries and enable women to earn a living. When you donot buy that ( in double meaning!) you rob them of there income.

It’s really a matter of awareness and reminding ourselves regarding : if we are buying any new garment, why do we need it, do we really need it, how will we dispose of it after, etc… it’s become much too easy to buy way too many clothes. Agree the royals could do HEAPS more to build awareness and buy/use responsibly.

Not a fan of Maxima’s jumpsuit, nor of the colour.
Amalia is 1m80, her grandmother is 1m72.
DeleteQueen Maxima had done some changes to make it fit better when she wore the dress. I can't remember by which designer this dress was made. I'll have to look on the Dutch websites.

ReplyDeleteImagine, that this beautiful green dress is 44 years old! It still looks modern and fresh and suits princess Amalia perfectly. It really warms my heart to see royals reusing so many clothes today.
ReplyDeleteQueen Maxima's jumpsuit-cape outfit has a wonderful colour, but perhaps the added cape part makes it look a bit too complicated.
@Anon 10:45 The "freedom of youth": is not freedom at all. They all wear what their friends wear, in order not to be bullied. They follow fashion and their friends. You can be sure that Amalia wears exactly what she wants to most of the time. That little time she is photographed she wears what is appropriate for her and not what you think would be better for her.

ReplyDeleteI agree that she dresses very maturely. I can see the temptation because she’s under such scrutiny and the criticism that goes along with it. But I wish her many more days wearing jeans and clothes like her friends, to maximise the freedom of youth.

All three wore it wonderfully, considering that Maxima is taller than Beatrix and Amalia is taller than Beatrix and Máxima - arms longer too. Updo: always a good idea not to cover a huge part of one's fabulous evening gown with hair.

DeleteI have to say the transformation of Amalia has been stunning. She really has blossomed into a beautiful young woman. She wears her clothes with style and confidence. This dress is older than she is,and it’s been preserved and worn beautifully by both Maxima and Amalia.

ReplyDeleteI actual like the dress on the princess the best out of the 3 who have worn it. The length of the dress and the sleeves, almost modernize it on her. Love the beading work and green looks so good on her.
ReplyDeleteAmalia looks beautiful in this vintage dress. I think the slightly shorter length looks great on her with her black heels. Her updo is also lovely, with the curls at the back.

ReplyDeleteI like the sentimental gesture of this green dress being passed down through the generations, but honestly, I think it only really suited Beatrix. It´s meant to be a floor-length gown, and it looks comically short on both Maxima and Amalia, who obviously are much taller. The sleeves are also way too short on both of them.

ReplyDeleteJe préfère la combinaison rose avec le gilet long rose, c'est original, mais sans la cape. Le collier est amusant, comme des écailles de pommes de pin.
Une robe portée par trois générations est une jolie idée, c'est une belle symbolique de transmission, mais je ne suis pas attirée par la couleur et encore moins par les plumes. Le visage d'Amalia est vraiment en valeur avec ce joli chignon, de plus sa coiffure ne cache pas ses belles boucles d'oreilles. Paloma.
In the meantime I found out who designed the green dress Princess Amalia wore. It was Theresia Vreugendhil in 1981 for a state visit of Queen Beatrix to Belgium.
ReplyDeleteWhat I didn't found yet was where the white mantilla Queen Mathilde wore comes from. I think it is not very old because it is still very white and it looks not very old. But I'll continue to do my research.
Well, no one can say this dress hasn't paid for itself. Ghosh! Not just several re-wears but re-wears across three generations! Wow! Will we see it again in twenty or thirty years on one of Amalia's daughters? I'm not going to bet against it. LOL.
ReplyDeleteThis is a good example of quality vs quantity. Regardless of personal taste (I like this green dress, btw), if something is well made and well taken care of it will truly last a lifetime and never go out of fashion. My mom taught me that as a little girl and I saw her put it into practice. As a result, I actually have clothing items as far back as high school (I'll be 60 next year) that still work – even as I’ve gone up and down in size. Things like very well made sweaters that are simple and can be pared with any skirt or pants, etc. I still have my mom's 100% cashmere coat with a detachable genuine mink collar from the 1960s!! It's a simple straight cut, knee length, with slash pockets. You can't tell what era it's from, it's timeless. There's a photo of her wearing it while holding me as an infant and I swear to you, the coat still looks fresh in 2025! It's okay to be trendy but you should always have several classic basic pieces in your wardrobe. They will never fail you.
