This year, the 21st informal meeting of the Heads of State of German-speaking countries is taking place in Switzerland, hosted by the President of the Swiss Confederation, Karin Keller-Sutter. These informal meetings have been held annually since 2004, with the exception of 2020, in one of the six participating nations.
King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium, Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, Hereditary Prince Alois and Hereditary Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein, Switzerland's President Karin Keller-Sutter and her husband Morten Keller, and Austria's President Alexander Van der Bellen with his wife Doris Schmidauer attended the informal gathering.
The Heads of State of Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Belgium are discussing a range of current issues, with a particular focus on Europe’s competitiveness. They will also visit St. Gallen, a city with a rich textile tradition, including the Swiss fashion house Akris, the cathedral, and the Abbey Library.
Mathilde is really tall! All the ladies look lovely
ReplyDeleteMathilde is indeed a tall lady (1,75m), but in these photos she comes across as unusually tall which she isn´t. The photos were taken from a very strange angle (very low) AND she was placed in the front row which makes her look taller than the people behind her. In the group photo, she looks like a head taller than the German president behind her, but if you compare to a group photo from a previous gathering, it´s clear that he is actually taller - even when she´s in heels: https://www.newmyroyals.com/2022/09/liechtenstein-hosts-18th-meeting-of.html

DeleteI clicked on the photo's from the 18th meeting in Liechtenstein
I don't see what you mean. I do know one thing that Queen Mathilde with heels is taller than King Philippe, when she wears no heels it is the king who is taller. What I also noticed is that Prince Alois of Liechtenstein is always the tallest of the group. His wife Princess Sophie is not exactly short herself, about the same or a bit shorter than Queen Mathilde. Pictures do not always show the reality. One says that Queen Maxima is taller than Queen Mathilde. There are many pictures where they are standing next to one another and each time Queen Mathilde is a bit taller than Queen Maxima, who also wears heels as high as Mathilde. Where I am looking at to see the length of a person, man or woman is the heigth of the shoulders. Sometimes people have a long neck and in total cm there is a difference with their neighbour. When you compare their shoulders the one with the shorter neck is sometimes taller.
What a coincidence ! King Philippe and Queen Mathilde also met in their hotel in Bad Ragaz, the Belgian national football team "De Rode Duivels - Les diables rouges" (The Red Devils) who stayed there as they played a match against Liechtenstein. I've heard that the Belgian team won the match.
ReplyDeleteThe dress and belt are not a good fit for Queen Mathilde with her high waist especially from the side profile!
ReplyDeleteHi Fitzhugh, I often think her high waist is a challenge, but I think she nailed it with this black and white outfit and the choice of belt width.
DeleteI disagree it suits her well. Give she is not as thin as the model the skirt falls differently. Perhaps a bit more fabric to the skirt would be a fix.
DeleteEverybody knows by now that Queen Mathilde is high waisted and has long legs. Why always repeating the same. Some Queens and/or princesses are low waisted with short legs. Question what is better ?
DeleteI think the dress is really nice in terms of silhouette and proportion. I do however think that the top part is not very attractive. I´d add cap sleeves and open up the neckline, maybe even make it a square one.
DeleteFitzhugh I agree:it is a beautiful dress but not good for Mathilde ( the same with the exuberant Nathan dress)

DeleteIf Queen Mathilde must do all these changes to the dress it is not a Carolina Herrera dress anymore. About square necks : one must always be very carefull with square necks which are only good on very thin women with a petite bra size. I do not think Queen Mathilde is in that category.
Queen Mathilde wore this houndstooth dress by Caroline Herrera for the first time in 2021. She is wearing matching shoes (by the same designer) in the same print. I still like Queen Mathilde in this dress which still suits her.
ReplyDeleteOn the first evening Queen Mathilde wore a long evening dress of 2023 by
Natan. She wore light beige shoes and a light beige clutch (or are the accessories golden ?). Not bad for an informal summit.
I've noticed that GD Maria-Teresa is not present. She probably had other occupations now that the enthronement of Prince Guillaume and Princess Stéphanie is arriving fast. The president of Switzerland is wearing beautiful clothes. The wife of the German president is looking very good and young in the black and white outfit.
Queen Mathilde’s houndstooth look still holds up, bold yet elegant. The Natan gown with softtoned accessories was a graceful choice for a relaxed summit. She balances classic and modern effortlessly.
DeleteEveryone looks very nicely dressed. In th group photo it seems like QM and the lady on the opposite end have dresses with similar style of full sleeves and bodice. Not my favourite dress for QM however a lovely colour on her
ReplyDeleteJ’aurais aimé voir la grande-duchesse du Luxembourg pour une de ses dernières sorties à ce titre. Elle aurait sûrement fait preuve d’élégance.
ReplyDeleteSwiss President Mrs. Keller-Suter wins all the way in terms of style. Simple elegance, professional hairdo.
ReplyDeleteQueen Mathilde stands out in a group like a parrot among sparrows: her striking color, huge patterns almost scream for attention. I've noticed she does this often when heads of state have similar meetings - an attention ruler.
Her pepito
dress is much better, although I would recommend some kind of light jacket with it. All ladies have it.
Stephanie
Queen Mathilde wears the dresses she likes and which are not too old to meet with other heads of state. It was also an informal meeting very different from a state visit. Queen Mathilde is certainly not a person who is crying for attention. That is not her way of being, not her nature. Besides she does not have to cry for attention. She gets it automatically when she is visiting other people in all kind of situations. She is known for her kindness, engagement, and so many more. She has a busy life and does not have the time to find out "what will I wear today" or "with what can I impress the most" when meeting president X or princess Y ? Besides she sees regularly the princes of Liechtenstein, Grand Duke Henri who is King Philippe's first cousin, ....,
Deletewhy would she feel the need ?

DeleteI believe that Mathilde is a nice and kind person and I don't know what Mathilde is thinking when she chooses her clothes, but I know how it will make me feel, specifically..
Stephanie
I like the dress. A short jacket would have helped balance out the checked material of the dress and shoes. And jacket would have helped to remove the focus on the high waist. It looks like her belt needs to be pulled down a little.
ReplyDeleteThe houndstooth dress is a fine piece, alas, not really the best for her body type, but I would favour this look any time over that red Natan. Which is so awful that it is almost funny.
ReplyDeleteShe looks fabulous in the b/white dress, suits her beautifully. The red dress she stands out, tall and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts as well, @ Ava.
DeleteShe looks just like she really is, tall and beautiful.
Regal and statuesque.
No more words needed.
Si je dois choisir, j'opterais pour la robe légère corail imprimée de grandes fleurs blanches ; très rafraîchissant !
