She has a beautiful face and would look great with extremely short hair or long hair, but half/half?, has she changed her mind halfway into shaving or is this a current trend?

I wouldn't exactly call her 'grey'. She shows much more dark hair than grey and she does seems to be more towards middle-aged than older. Given that, why not go for a trendy, contemporary haircut like so many women do? As Zucchina says, this style of cut, with a shave on one side and longer on the other, has been around for a decade, and even more. It is not an unusual hairstyle at all.
