On August 15, 2025, Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako attended a memorial service marking the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II. In a national ceremony at Tokyo’s Nippon Budokan Hall, about 4,500 officials, bereaved families, and their descendants from around the country observed a moment of silence at noon — the time when the then-emperor’s surrender speech began on August 15, 1945.

Emperor Naruhito’s grandfather, Emperor Hirohito — known posthumously as Emperor Showa — announced Japan’s surrender in a radio address to the nation on August 15, 1945. The formal act of surrender took place on September 2 aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, with representatives from the Allied nations present.
