On June 6, King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Princess Estelle, Prince Oscar, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Madeleine, and Christopher O'Neill attended the 2025 National Day celebrations at Skansen, Stockholm’s open-air museum. Later in the evening, the King and Queen hosted a reception at the Royal Palace for representatives of the parliament, the government, official Sweden, and members of the diplomatic corps.
I have never understood why Swedish men and Japanesse men never wear traditional attire on such ocassions. Atleast the Norwegians try. It seems so disrespectful to the women who are honoring their culture.

DeleteI guess that if it was considered disrespectful for the men to not wear a traditional costume they wouldn't do it? ;-)
If I'm not mistaken wearing traditional attire fell into disuse several times during history (industrialisation, World Wars, etc...). Queen Silvia started dressing like this on the national day somewhere in the 80's, so it's a relatively recent development. Her daughters doing the same is probably more "family tradition" than a general royal dress code.
In my opinion, it was disrespectful of the national costume for P M to wear high heels, instead of the traditional shoes (i've seen her in the traditional shoes before).
DeleteIn Sweden and Japan, men’s traditional clothing hasn’t been as elaborate or formal as women’s, so it’s less common for them to wear it. Historically, men’s attire was more practical and didn’t evolve into a ceremonial dress like women’s.
DeleteIn Norway, though, men wear the bunad, which might come from a stronger desire to preserve cultural identity. It’s true that women often have the role of visibly representing cultural heritage.
So wonderful thar Pr M and her family is back in Sweden!
ReplyDeleteWhat a pity that Sofia wasn't there!
ReplyDeleteEstelle is a beautiful girl.
I thought the same thing especially when she just made an appearance recently.
DeleteDon't like this Sweden suit. They have traditional costumes that is so much, much better to wear.
ReplyDeleteThe traditional costumes in Sweden are beautiful and rich in history. They have so much character and connection to the culture. The folkdräkt really carries a lot of significance, especially during national events. It would definitely be cool to see more of that traditional pride on display!
Delete@anon 09:30 I guess this one is more neutral, it represents the entire country instead of a region of the country. But I agree that there are some really gorgeous ones out there!
Delete“Sweden suit” :-). Yes there are many variations. I find them all beautiful.

Chris O'Neill seldom looks happy.
DeleteHmmm I’m not sure Chris O’Neill enjoys being on show with the family he married into. Not sure whether he’s shy or whether it’s some other reason. He does look like he’s relishing being wrapped up and unrecognisable in the plastic poncho - perhaps not a hardy outdoors guy? - whereas the King stands without any coat!!
ReplyDeleteEven though the weather didn't cooperate the SRF ladies glowed in their beautiful National Day outfits.

Have never cared for this folkloric cosplay
ReplyDelete17:48 a strange comment. Best to let the Swedes enjoy their National day and the traditions they esteem. You can observe here without trying to offend, there’s much to learn.
DeleteCalling how the Royal women dressed as part of the celebration of Nationaldag Day is very disrespectful. You can like it or not but being disrespectful is not OK.
