On June 6, 2025, Queen Sonja and Crown Princess Mette-Marit hosted an Afternoon Tea at Oscarshall to mark the visit of choreographer Jiří Kylián and author Haruki Murakami to Norway. On the second floor of the summer palace, the Queen and Crown Princess welcomed their guests. Czech-born Kylián is widely regarded as the greatest living choreographer, while Murakami is considered one of the world’s most celebrated and widely read authors.
Mikhail Baryshnikov and Liv Ullmann were also among the distinguished guests at the palace on Bygdøy. Latvian-born Baryshnikov is recognized as one of the greatest ballet dancers of the 20th century. Ullmann, a Norwegian actress and film director, is also known as one of the muses of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman.
Poor Mette-Marit, she had to drink tea!
ReplyDeleteFYI, tea Is constantly sipped on throughout the day in the Scandi countries.
DeleteThen look at the tablet , please.
Can you see all those candles lit in glass small vases?
Well, they are another constant tradition/ usage in the Scandi countries at mealtimes, including this formal afternoon tea reception.
The meaning of candles is : conviviality, home coziness, the light as opposed to the darkness and cold outside (of course, not so much during the summer months in Norway, though the more you get closer to the North Pole , the more natural light is dim, ie in the outermost parts of the Lafoten Islands).
I saw this same candle rituals in Sweden.
Do you not like tea, anonymous? I love fancy afternoon tea and the guests sound like a phenomenal group so the conversation was probably fascinating.

As a Norwegian don't worry we like tea.
DeleteI donot think tea was the most important contribution that afternoon!
DeleteHow about the conversation among those very interesting people of different disciplines and cultural background?! Oh, would have loved to have been there!
「Sex and the City」が懐かしいです。
