King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima are paying a two-day state visit to the Czech Republic at the invitation of President Petr Pavel. On June 4, 2025, President Pavel and his wife, Eva Pavlová, welcomed the King and Queen during an official ceremony at the presidential palace in Prague. The royal couple then laid a wreath at the monument honoring Czech politician and women’s rights advocate Milada Horáková.
In the afternoon, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima visited the Czech Senate for a meeting with its President, Miloš Vystrčil. For the state visit, Queen Máxima chose a white dress by Dutch designer Jan Taminiau. She had previously worn this dress, which features an openwork neckline, at the coronation of King Charles.
Jan Taminiau Scattered Flower Dress
Dress and shoes great, but the hat despite being nice in itself is too big or it slid down. Photo 2,3,4 she can’t see her hostess.
ReplyDeletethe hat it to much, i don t like it, so high on her had, oh no.
DeleteIs the Dutch queen getting married? :)
ReplyDeleteNo kidding. I thought the same thing. It's an OK dress but not really appropriate for this occasion. Plus with that hat, she's gonna take off like Sally Field in the old "Flying Nun" tv show. Kim

DeleteHaaaaaaaaaaaa!! LOL!!
Had to lol at the Flying Nun reference
DeleteThe dress is very pretty but as you say more of a cocktail dress or afternoon wedding. She is so often OTT, stealing all the thunder from the King and it is rude to wear a hat that obscures the your face in front of your hostess.
DeleteBeautiful dress but a big no to the flying saucer on Queen Maxima's head!
ReplyDeleteThe Lady in red does not seem to look happy about it.
Well, the lady in red can't see her face half the time. Ha! It's almost like a "Talk to the hand ...." situation.
DeleteReally a ridiculous hat which is imv an insult to the host cause it blocks the interaction between people
DeleteI love Maxima's dress but totally dislike the hat. I've never liked these tilted, saucer shaped hats (that British royals seem to love) but this one is particularly egregious. A simpler hat (or some other head attire) would have let this delicate yet bold dress get the full attention it deserves. I love it now as much as the first time she wore it.

I agree with you about her hat. Most of the millinery worn by the British royals is not my taste, so I don't comment. I stick to the clothes instead. I always prefer a simple, clean line, which includes hats.
DeleteI am so glad someone thought to reset Queen Maxima's hat--the way it was obscuring her face was terrible. I think Maxima looks marvelous in this dress--it fits her so well and the drape of the fabric is wonderful. I'm still not sold on her hat--angle of the brim is too extreme. A slight modification to the height would improve its overall look in my opinion. I know Max likes to wear her bling but I think she erred this time--that huge, gorgeous brooch is totally lost in the flowers. I wish she had done one of unique brooch placements or just left the brooch off completely. Maxima looks beautiful and very elegant here so I am excited for the rest of the visit.

I've always liked this dress. Unfortunately there was a problem with the hat. I read on the Dutch websites that Queen Maxima had to ask during the ceremony to do something about the hat as it was placed wrongly on her head. On some pictures it is visible. I also think the brooch is not looking good on the lacework of the dress.
ReplyDeleteI also read today that for the coronation of King Charles this dress was ordered at Jan Taminiau to be a long dress. Only 2 days before the coronation Queen Maxima was informed that the royal ladies could wear a short dress in a colour of their choice. The dress had to be made shorter quickly to be ready in time. This information is coming from a Dutch website about the Dutch royals. There has probably been a misunderstanding during the communication about the dress code.
Stunning perfect hat.
ReplyDeleteLovely dress and beautiful hairstyle but the position of her hat - what was she thinking

DeleteMaxima has a nice dress and this time her hair is beautifully styled.
ReplyDeleteWhat I don't understand, however, is the satellite dish she's wearing on her head. It would have been much, much better if she had taken off that ridiculous hat. She must have known that the first lady wouldn't be wearing anything on her head. The first lady, Mrs. Eva Pavlová, has a dress that's too long, but otherwise it's chic. The orange color is probably a subtle reference to the Dutch national colors (Oranje).
I like the outfit of the Speaker of the Czech Parliament, Mrs. Markéta Pekarová-Adamová the most. She's wearing a beige dress in the photo with the royal couple by the national flags (Markéta = the Czech version of the name Margaret).
I'm not against all hats, but I find Maxima's too theatrical. In the photo where both ladies are climbing the stairs, her hat is particularly funny. I like the example of the women from the British royal family (Princess Catherine or Duchess Sophie) - when they go on a state visit, they always try to adapt a little to the fashion style of the host country. With this in mind they choose colors, patterns or come without a hat. It is - in my opinion - very nice and polite. But Maxima seems to not share this fashion diplomacy. She has to drag her mega pampa-style hats everywhere.

If you had read my comment you should have known that there was something wrong with Queen Maxima's hat.(anonymous 17:33). She wore the same hat at the coronation of King Charles. If you compare both pictures you see that the hat was placed better on her head during the coronation. (last picture on the left).
DeleteI am sure Queen Maxima is aware before she starts a state visit about the customs and the dresscode of the country she visits. You compare with Princess Catherine when she is on state visit. May I draw your attention on the fact that when she and Prince William were on state visit in the Carribean, she was overdressed most of the time. She wore lace dresses to visit poor people in tropical countries. It was far from being adapted to the countries they visited. Another thing I would like you to know is that Queen Maxima is also buying hats at the same hat makers as the British royal ladies. I remember Sophie's hat at the latest Garden Parties it looked like a flying soucer filled with flowers.
Catherine and Sophie are not queens, so protocol will dictate what they wear will be different.Don’t forget the late queen wore hats to be seen.
Deleteto Anon 20:08
Delete1. Comparing Queen Elizabeth II's decent hats with the ridiculously huge hats of Maxima of the Netherlands - it's clear who was more appropriate.
2. Sophie's eccentric hat at the garden party in the UK is appropriate - other visiting ladies wore hats too: it's a tradition in the UK. (Definitely not in the Czech Republic).
3. By Princess Catherine: I meant her visit to Pakistan, where she beautifully took inspiration from the local style.
My humble opinion is: Maxima's hat is inappropriate for this occasion, no matter what angle it is placed on.

DeleteIn the meantime I found out that the white hat is designed by British hat maker Philip Treacy. Queen Maxima is a queen and she is doing what all the queens of The Netherlands have been doing, wearing a hat on state visits.
I also wish to draw your attention on the fact that I DIDN'T spoke of, nor compared Queen Elizabeth II hats with the hats of Queen Maxima. You did.
Once again a proof that you don't even read what other commenters are writing. And I find it very rude of you NOT to call Queen Maxima by her title followed by her name, but simply write Maxima.
I always try not to forget put the title before the name when I write about a queen or a princess even when I don't like the dress or hat she is wearing.
The jewelry is exquisite; the dress beautifull; the hat to big, but the overall impression of course quite good.
ReplyDeleteOne quibble: please put your feet together, it is so much more elegant!
As we age, our balance can be affected. She may need to stand that way to help her maintain her balance. While it is more elegant to stand with feet together, she may not be able to. Just a thought.
DeleteI would suspect the photo was taken caught the woman mid step, as she was positioning herself next the the king.
DeleteTo wear this dress to king Charles’ coronation is appropriate imo, but today I feel it’s slightly overdressed.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree, especially worn with the large brooch. The inset photo shows her at the coronation, without the brooch, and she looks lovely. The hat is better positioned there too. (V.M.)
DeleteI agree. But better a little bit overdressed than underdressed :-) I do think she looks fabulous from head to toe in this outfit, including the hat.

Superb Maxima probably needed to adjust the hat angle a little if she was going to spend time in a small party which would want to see her face and chat. Love the hat but not the angle. The dress is very interesting and she looks incredibly elegant but I wonder why the designer put that rope belt on?
ReplyDelete@ Anonymous 18:16
DeleteJan Taminiau made the belt in the same fabric as the lace work on the bodice. It is not a rope.
I suppose you do realize that she is not putting herself the hat on her head. Probably the hairdresser who came with her did it after he/she finished her coiffure. It has been corrected during the ceremony at a moment it was possible to do it.
DeleteGeorgeous outfit but this hat big satellite dish is big NO unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteI like Maxima’s dress. I think it would look better without the brooch. Her earrings are exquisite. The hat looks much too large, although slightly better in the pictures where its placement appears to have been adjusted to not obstruct her eyes.

About the hat; this would be a great hat for a big church/cathedral wedding or christening but maybe not for these festivities. That's number one. Number two; the placement - or the lack there of - is the other problem here. When you've got a hat with this much going on, you really do have to find the "sweet spot" for *your head* in order to get the right effect. Max didn't hit the spot. :-/ This is also a perfect example of part of your ensemble' (said with a French accent) entering the room before you do.
ReplyDeleteLook at the photo of how she wore it before and the placement and, then look it how she's wearing here. It's in the wrong place/at the wrong angle. It's almost like someone putting their wig on backwards. It's just off.
ReplyDeleteI like her dress, not over the top. It is too bad the hat slid down or was placed incorrectly, it is a pretty hat.
In this situation I'm surprised Maxima didn't take the hat off.
ReplyDeleteSuperbe Maxima dans ce style de robe mais pour cette occasion, j'aurais bien vu plus de sobriété dans le choix de ses bijoux ainsi que dans celui de son chapeau que je trouve trop envahissant !
ReplyDeleteWell, much had been said, i as well like Maxima's outfit, and this time I believe the big hat, which is kind of her signature went wrong.
ReplyDeleteThanks to the commenter that use the word "millinery" love going to the dictionary when I encounter something new.
And, I might be wrong, but don't recall ever seeing the King holding flowers, I can see that he presented them to the first lady, but still caught my attention
Luna
I love the dress, The hat is perfect as it is, and the brooche is beautiful.
