On July 27, 2023, Empress Masako of Japan, Princess Hanako of Hitachi and Princess Nobuko of Mikasa attended the Florence Nightingale Medal Ceremony at Tokyo Prince Hotel in Tokyo. The Empress presented the medals to nurses Miki Takahara, Tomoko Kusama and Setsuko Imamura. The medal is awarded to nurses with outstanding achievements around the world. Empress Masako is the honorary president of the Japanese Red Cross Society.
It is nice to see, that so many members of the Imperial Family partake, at this event lead by the Empress. Beautiful suits worn by the Imperial ladies. css

Empress Masako's white suit fits perfectly, and the white fabric is luxurious. I like the turned up cuffs which may be satin. The red ribbons pop against the white of her jacket. Of course, her pearls are gorgeous!

ردحذفPrincess Hanako is always very elegant. I always find Princess Nobuko's suits oddly less well fitting/more rumpled than the rest of the Imperial Family's.

ردحذفThere are any number of royals who have developed their own preferred fashion style to the extent that it eventually turns into a uniform. Queen Elizabeth was certainly an example of this. She had a thousand variations on a single theme. There are other royal women who have developed their own personal uniform. What sets the Japanese royal women apart is that, rather than developing individual uniforms, they all appear to have adopted the same uniform, which raises the question of whether it is a personal choice based on their preferences and what makes them comfortable or a choice imposed from some higher authority. It is the apparent imposition that makes this group uniform somehow troubling. Ed
ردحذفI do so agree with you. The outfits are not traditional nor any fashion but as you said, a perhaps comfortable and easy to wear ‘uniform’ that doesn’t stick out . However not so exiting, a bit boring.

HIH P Hanako’s suit is impeccably cut and beautifully fitted on her. I like that she’s wearing her hat an angle; just that little detail adds immensely to the whole look.

I sometimes wonder what the Japanese imperial family thinks about the sartorial choices of some of our MAJOR royal and princely families…….No need to be more specific. Dear Ed, Do we have to understand the purpose of the dress protocol of the imperial court? There is nothing troubling about sartorial dignity in Japan. What is troubling is the absence of such dignity in Europe among certain members. All it does is to feed the greedy mouths of anti-monarchists, that is the fundamental problem. The Japanese protocol obviously offers tradition and a certain protection from avoidable attackers.

Here, hear Virginia! Your words reflect my own thoughts. I have so much respect for all the Japanese royals. This is just one aspect of how more grounded they are compared to the flashy European counterparts. They’re not out there to be trendy and promote brands and give them unfair advantages compared to other brands. Their sartorial choices are always anonymous. And wonderfully appropriate. Not showing off in any respect.
