    1. There are too many buttons, the brooch was not necessary but a very classy look. I did not understand Camilla's outfit, i know she is a colonel but her outfit is an imitation of the the uniform!

How cute are Louis's red shorts. Charlotte's sailor dress is adorable.

Catherine looks very tired. A lot of harsh make-up also (more obvious in pictures on other websites). The jacket reminds me of the 80's. I was born then, but I can imagine Diana might have worn this. The colour suits Catherine. I'd like to see a picture of the whole outfit of Camilla. Her coat is in military style, I like it at first sight but I'm wondering why she chose this? Winners are Sophie, who looks exquisite, and the children. If Sophie would sell her own skincare and make-up, she'd be rich. I would like to know which products she uses, she looks better than ever nowadays.

    1. QC is Colonel of the Grenadier Guards and therefore had a uniform made representing that particular regiment. CPoW is Colonel of the Irish Guards, therefore appeared in green and wore a shamrock brooch. Additionally, the Wales family, including Catherine, all wore colours that are also in the Welsh flag, which is green, white and red. WPow, of course, is Colonel of the Welsh Guards. All the clothes had a very specific meaning. SDoE and the Gloucesters did wear normal daywear, as they do not hold military positions of the regiments involved in Trooping the Colour. I hope that clarfies some of the questions raised.

I like Catherine's dress. The green color suits her. What I don't understand is the brooch in yellow gold ? Doesn't match the earrings and the buttons on her dress. I think less buttons would have been better. In a periodical about royals I read she is called now the Duchess of buttons. Camilla looks ridiculous in that military outfit. Sophie is looking very lovely lately. She looks younger and younger. Charlotte's dress is lovely but too long. At the coronation she also wore a white dress of the same length. She is still a little girl why can't they let her wear shorter dresses (skirts). Her hair is done like old women used to do. I think I saw the last women with their hair that way when I was a little girl. There are so many beautiful hairstyles for girls of her age. Why can't they let her hair loose, especially on events like this. I like little Louis in his red short trousers. He is behaving like every little boy of his age. I hope he can stay natural for a long time.

Look at the Norwegian royal family, Swedish, Spanish, Luxembourg. They are class without being pompous. Even the Wales kids at early age learn how to dress very formally.

Catherine looks stunning in her green dress and hat! Love that she has chosen green since she is now the Colonel of the Irish Guards--and she wore the shamrock brooch today too. Her dress and hat are beautiful--the blue buttons(?) and darker green satin details are gorgeous finishing details. QC is perfectly attired to reflect her new position as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards. Must admit I miss her usual gorgeous huge hat and jewels but I also think the respect she is showing for her new position is wonderful--and is a sweet way to honor her beloved father. Sophie is beautiful in her cream dress--fits her like a glove--and pretty floral hat. The Wales children are wearing different looks in red, white, and blue. Charlotte's dress is so pretty--the red trim is lovely--and I love her hairstyle. The Duchess of Gloucester looks good and I really like her hat. I miss seeing Louise and James with their parents, Tim Lawerence in his uniform, and Princess Alexandra. Great day and wonderful ceremony!

It sadly is a mock uniform, just grabbing details from the real deal & sticking them on a red coat. Same with the hat. I don't like it. Elizabeth II's uniform was also altered in 1952 to fit a woman's/Queen's body, but the changes were subtle & the result still looked very much like the actual uniform. I'm afraid Camilla's version just looks like a bad costume.

    2. There are not many rules to this certain kind of "uniform". It is entirely up to the customer and tailor how it will look like in the end. It would have been different, had QC chosen to ride on horse-back as well, being part of the troops. Then the uniform had to meet more requirements as to authenticity and regiment rules.

Time and again the makeup issue comes up. Makeup is adjusted for the event and time of day. She is also wearing a wide brimmed hat that shadows her face. Kate is being viewed from a distance by many thousands of people. Subtle makeup would be invisible on her to the crowds. The ultimate example is when they are on the balcony. It is like when you see a play. Actors wear stage makeup. It needs to make the features visible from a distance and in difficult lighting. She is going to have a difficult time balancing her makeup for the nature of the event and zoom lenses that will be printing closeup photos of her face.

I have seen remarks in the past suggesting Catherine has had Botox in places that would make it impossible for her to close her eyes or move her mouth. It is a matter of not fully understanding where it is injected and what it is used for.

I was really looking forward to this day and honestly... I'm simply disappointed. Catherine looks great in this colour, which reminds me very much of something the late Queen would've worn. Unfortunately, the cut does too. The applications look so dated, the shape is boring, the jewellery is a terrible mis-match.

I also wish Camilla would've worn something "normal". I get that she has a military position, but I don't like this uniform-turned-coat thing. Either wear a full uniform, like Anne, or just wear a regular coat/dress with a regiment badge or something as a brooch. I think this looks costume-y and borderline ridiculous.

Sophie is my clear winner of the day. She clearly played it safe, so I didn't exactly gasp when I saw her outfit, but it's a pretty combination with lovely styling.

The comments above say just about everything. The only thing I would expand on is Camilla's outfit. I have never understood wearing a uniform you didn't earn. Something feels very wrong about it. I would have preferred she wear a dress in the colors of the Grenadier Guards as a nod to them, the way The PoW did. Lastly, the whole thing felt underwhelming. Slimming down the monarchy looks sad. It would have been nice to see the entire family on the balcony due to the fact that it was Charles birthday celebration.

The Queen's outfit was ... beyond words. About Catherine's eye-makeup: yes, it is quite a lot, but I think there are at least two factors to be considered. One is the big hat, shadowing her face, so probably she wanted more accent there. But more important than that: This is makeup made for people who do not see her closely, but from far away, not in a room but a huge open place. We look at photos shot into her face - this is not the primary reality she was preparing for, the primary one is sitting in the coach, watching the trooping and standing on the balcony.

The "christmassy" colours: A bit of background does not harm when watching royal ceremonies to be able to judge/appreciate what one looks at. Most of them go back several hundred years. These two women had a function as Colonels and they wore the colours of the Guards of which they are Colonels. - I am sure Charlotte was keen to have an updo like her mother and why not - so she got her little updo, with the added benefit that she was not going to fuss with her hair like she does when it is open or in a ponytail. I also appreciate the length of her dress, this was a huge royal celebratory act and not a visit to the playground, so you wear what is simple and traditional at the same time to be judged in 50 or 100 years too.

Colonels ? I bed none of them had a military training. Why is it necessary then to make them colonel or lieutenant-colonel or any other ?
"so wear what is simple and traditional at the same time to be judged in 50 or 100 years" ? Do you think that in 50 or 100 years there still will be parades like this ? If they continue like that I think there may be sooner than expected no kings, queens, princes and princesses anymore. And I do not mean only in Britain but in all the European countries who still have kingdoms. In fact I am just reading a book about the history of all the former European kingdoms which have disappeared since the early middle ages.

@Anon 15:44, "why colonel": It is not necessary, it is tradition and continuity. Why should we cancel parts of this tradition as long as there is a monarchy. Maybe, or sure, we will not have kings and queens and parades and colonels in future times. But we always will have history and looking back (what you do by reading that book) is important.

@ Virginia. I didn't say that Charlotte looks like a little old lady, I said her hair was done like older women did their hair a long time ago. Since this is a fashion site I have the right to say what I think of the dresses, shoes, jewelry, hairstyle, etc.. of everybody whose picture is coming by. I live in Europe too and I must say that in most families with young kids, even in royal families the children's hairstyle is much more modern. The girls of the same age as Princess Charlotte that I know wouldn't go out with hair done like that. Today mothers and grandmothers have no time anymore to spend hours to make them look this way. They take their children by the hand and go with them to the nearest hairstylist. Maybe poor people who doesn't have the money to go to the hairdresser still do it themselves. But this is certainly not the case for children in royal families. Besides the hairdresser comes to the palace to do the hair from the adults and then they do the hair of the children too.

Charles needs to bring the monarchy into the 21st century and not necessarily by slimming it down but by reducing the costumes.

@Virginia. I have friends in Tirol just across the border with Bavaria. I must say their children and also the parents have a more fashioned hairstyle than I have. With the annual festivities in their village they dress of course in their typical Austrian clothes : the mother and the daughter in their "dirndl" and the father and the sons in their "lederhosen". Their hair cannot be done like in the old days because they all have short hair. I've seen in the village little girls with long hair but they let it loose or in a modern updo. These people are very hardworking men and women in the touristic sector. These people have no time to do the hair of their children, grandparents are still working too although they are in their seventies. The children have to work too during the schoolholidays. Since there is a "Wienerfriseur" in every village they all go there to do their hair.

In general i like the dresses and outfits everyone is wearing. Some one mention that we should always put context into the pictures we are judging, and in this case many already explained the symbols in the ladies clothing, also very cleverly was mentioned that the make up was more directed to the larger public, hence spectators from a far, therefore we can approve the make up choices.
I also like princess Charlotte's hair, my daughter, 7 years old, was very happy when she got her hair done for her grandmother's 70th birthday party, and CC coincidently, it was similar to Charlotte's, so i don't see any wrong there.
And i do agree with some, the balcony is looking very empty, I'm thinking that some cousins will jump in when Williams time comes around, maybe Zara, Beatrice and Eugene, otherwise they will very short in hands.
And further a little note, i don't think we should compare other European royal houses with the British one, they are just different and the pomp and circumstance given to some events/ traditions is different, again context, in each country.

@Luna. You are right we cannot compare other European royal houses with the British one, but I prefer the other with their simplicity, elegance and "chique" than the British. Like Coco Chanel always said "before going out take one or two things off".

Not a fan of the green ;she looks like a frog; maybe a nice navy outfit with a green hat with a blue band. The kids look good. Not sure what Camilla was thinking ;even the Queen would not have worn an outfit which is not military; somebody got it wrong(Tabby)

Kate looks stunning in the green. She certainly outshines everybody. The green outfit is so classy and that hat with it. Wow. Wow. Love the effect of the buttons. It makes it a bit more playful. It reminds me of medals on men. So cleverly done.
