On March 8, the Princess of Wales visited the 1st Battalion Irish Guards in Salisbury for the first time since she became Colonel. The Princess became Colonel in December 2022, taking over from her husband Prince William who became Regimental Colonel of the Welsh Guards. The visit to Salisbury was the second official engagement the Princess undertook as Colonel of the Irish Guards.

It is not hard to work out why she is in military attire. She is not going to wear designer plus clothes when you look at the back ground environment. She is outside in the snow. Regardless of the setting let's face it she looks elegant & is the perfect princess. Mary

  2. I don't understand why she's dressed in army colours. She is the Princess of Wales, not an army member. Lately there are too many marketing photoshoots with this couple, there is no need.

    1. Its an honorary act, we have seen it with CP Victoria, CP Mary, Sophie of Wessex when they visited military bases.

      To Alondra
      1. Maybe because she is in the field? Try looking at the background of the photos. Snow, rocks, mud - I wonder what you think she should wear.
      2. Members of the royal family are patrons of many units, how else to express support, solidarity? In my opinion, an excellent choice.
      3. The Prince and Princess of Wales are fulfilling their duties, they don't have to do marketing, because they have no plans to sell their titles and photos and get multi-million dollar contracts with media giants like Netflix and the like. At least we know that these particular photos are really from the given event and are not staged.

Because she's Regimental Colonel and she's actively taking part in the day. It's not marketing, it's reporting what she's doing.

    5. Dear Alondra, you might be not informed correctly about the state of this visit. This is not about visiting some soldiers in their barracks for a patron saint's day, where one could wear a dress and heels, this is about actively participating in a military drill. Of course you would wear field dress or camouflage, as you are supposed to blend in with the others. It might have escaped your notice that HRH The Princess of Wales had been appointed Colonel of the Irish Guards most recently, so she is an army member in that capacity, and her visit reflects that. No "marketing photo-op" as you put it.

@missy. As far as I know, of those you name here, only CP Victoria had a full military education.

@alondra It is different in the UK than elsewhere. I don't know where you are from, but in the US, a civilian would not be handed a rank and don a uniform. I assume the ranks are honorary, but it would still be considered stolen valor here. I fully understand things are done differently in the UK, but I think it would be more palatable if these positions went to people that are or were members of the military and not primarily reserved for the BRF. Some people believe that only those who have earned the right to wear the uniform should be allowed to wear it.

As mentioned above, Victoria has every right to be in uniform. The others I am uneasy about on a personal level, but accept their traditions.

As their new CiC she chose a cold day to visit them on exercise on the Salisbury Plains! But she’s certainly dressed for the occasion! I suppose we’ll them next on St Patrick’s Day, when they hand out the shamrocks to the soldiers. Bea

  5. In her capacity as Regimental Colonel, the Princess was actively involved in training and learning first aid on this visit. Snowing, and freezing temperatures, the soldiers work hard to train behind the scenes, its pleasing to see this highlighted by the visit of the Princess. The Soldiers have my deepest respect. Catherine did marvelously participating, well done to her, this is important IMO. As a side note she looked great in army dress code.

I guess it's a little confusing since for some royal families the person actually does several weeks or months of military training while others just have an honorary rank. It does feel a bit odd that while some who have actually served are no longer allowed to wear their uniform while others who have never been on a battlefield can. Whatever.

The people who actually served but can no longer wear their uniform are following the rules that apply to all former members of the British armed forces.

The role may be honorary but it's still a position within the service - hence the uniform.

As you say different countries have different rules. Some countries arrest people for wearing camouflage clothing as fashion.

Not to appear rude but I have to say, never been a fan of her skinny jeans/Jegging attire. It doesn’t appear flattering, her head looks larger than her thigh. Not very portioned to her body frame which can take a few extra pounds.- A Summer

Agreed. I always thought she looked her best in terms of facial features during late pregnancy. Her face filled out just right. But I can understand wanting to stay as thin as possible being in the public eye. Regardless of what people say, its easier to be accused of being too skinny as opposed to too fat.

Good for her, getting right into the occasion, supporting the troops, doing her job, and looking quite nice. Especially like the plaited hair. Edwina
