Poor little Princess Aiko, I feel sad for her. She is a pretty young woman and has a beautiful smile, but that dress is simply ugly. I hope she had a good day after all, she seems too enjoy the company of her horses.

The dress is appropriate. It's a conservative society.

et les chaussures,... même ma mère de 90 ans ne les porterait pas !

    5. I admit the point on conservative style, however I don't think it needs to go that far ... Other Japanese princesses found a way to respect it in a softer way. I hope Aiko has some friends and is able to enjoy some social life with young people (and not only horses). The problem is that this style takes her so far away from today's young people.

Same century everywhere, I can assure you. But there exist different cultural norms and royal traditions. Persons who are really interested in it, respect differences, instead of bashing them. (-Ann)

I don't think, she is a beauty. Anyway not on these photos. She may be a nice person, but to me she looks rather clumsy, not pretty or elegant.

She has a lovely smile. I don't understand the outfit but the clothing of the imperial family often baffles me. Most other young royals would be in jeans and riding boots. (V.M.)

  6. I hope she does horse-riding, too. Not just going to the stables for a photo op. If she is indeed riding horses it would have looked so much better, more authentical, to show her in her riding habit. The pinafore dress does nothing for her. It looks drab and very, very, very oldfashioned.

Happy Birthday Princess. She seems so much younger than 21 (maybe it's just the horrible, juvenile dress?).

Aiko certainly does resemble her Father. Hard to find a fashion comment except to say that she is dressed according to the conservative styles followed by the Japanese Imperial family. That is her identity and it is understandable.

I believe she is a nice girl, but here we are on a fashion website. It seems that she inherited the shoes of 96-year-old Elizabeth II. I'm 20 years older than her, but I wouldn't wear this outfit for anything in the world. Stephanie

Elizabeth II dressed much better (including her shoes) - she had a very elegant and iconic style,

  15. I’ve read that for her 21st birthday the celebrations will be low key.
She is not allowed to have any public celebrations.
Apparently, in Japan, it’s their 20th birthday when they become of age and they have lots of celebrations to mark the occasion.
There were public celebrations for her 20th birthday.
I like what @-Ann said about Japanese culture…….”People who are really interested in it, respect differences, instead of bashing them”.
As for her tenue, she is a Japanese princess, she is in Japan and is probably still under the rules of the Japanese household.
A very Happy Birthday to Princess Aiko.

Former Princess Mako and Princess Kako haven't looked this bad. While they have dressed conservatively, they never looked one step away from entering a convent. This is not at all according to the conservative style of Imperial Household Agency. This is on another level. It gives one the impression they are trying to keep her undesirable so she won't marry and leave the family like Mako did and Kako will most likely do. I feel very sorry for her. She looks very sheltered.

There were published (and not denied) reports that Aiko was badly bullied early on in school in frightening ways (“rough boys” was the description—brings up not good possibilities). For a time, her mother, Masako, accompanied her to classes. I don’t know her, obviously, but I would agree that she does have a very young affect for her age compared to her female cousins. She has a pleasant face but not exactly beautiful. Time will tell how her life progresses.

Oh dear--nothing postive on the fashion side here. I understand the Japanese royals are very conservative but this dressis so severe. I know that as a younger girl Princess Aiko had some emotional issues at school so I hope she is fully recovered and enjoys a wonderful 21st birthday, full of everything she enjoys.

  20. Es un vestido muy feo, lo siento pero si hablamos de moda esto no la favorece.
