On October 1, 2021, Grand Duke George Mikhailovich Romanov, a descendant of the Russian royal family, got married to his Italian fiancée Victoria Romanovna Bettarini (born Rebecca Virginia Bettarini) at St Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg. The bride wore a white satin gown by fashion designer Reem Acra, and the Lacis Tiara by Chaumet. The wedding took place as a religious ceremony that was attended by hundreds of foreign guests.

Thus, St Petersburg, which used to be the capital of the Russian Empire, hosted the country's first royal wedding since the 1917 revolution. George Mikhailovich Romanov visited Russia for the first time in 1992, and he currently lives in Moscow and works on a number of charity projects there. Rebecca Virginia Bettarini converted to the Russian Orthodox faith last year and took the name Victoria Romanovna Bettarini.

  4. A happy couple and a beautiful bride; unfortunately, an ill-fitting gown. It makes one ponder what Reem Acra could have been thinking. The entire top 1/3 of this wedding dress is simply too tight, including the upper arms. Something very untoward is going on with the bustline as it presents in profile, and the crew neckline is so tight as to give the effect of choking the bride. The attachment of the ‘cape-train’ at the shoulders gives the appearance of being tacked on with push pins. The Lacis Tiara is a masterpiece by Chaumet but ‘inverted V-shaped’ tiaras are the most difficult ones to wear, as they must sit farther back on the head at a slight angle, and be supported by a bit of hair underneath to act as a cushion to soften the ‘V’. Here also we see a good example of a veil having no proximity to the tiara, creating a somewhat detached look. (For an explanation on winning strategies in bridal veil/tiara combinations, interested readers may refer to my post dated 9/5/21 on Princess Maria Anunciata and her spectacular assemblage of the Habsburg Fringe Tiara.) On a brighter note, the earrings are lovely, and the groom is so happy he’s crying.

    1. Thank you again for your detailed explanations. I confess that while I liked the simplicity of the wedding gown, there was something not quite right about the top of it. Now I know why it doesn't look quite right. I think I would also have preferred a deeper scoop or a V or cowl for the neckline. More importantly, she looks beautiful and they seem to be joyously happy. Best wishes to them for a long and happy marriage.

Beautiful fabric and a nice silhouette however I think around the bust it should have been let out at the seams, too tight and makes her bust look pushed up awkwardly.

Lovely, elegant bride. The entire affair was a grand success. It was dazzling, sumptuous and very Royal. I expected nothing less from an Imperial wedding in St. Petersburg!

Beautiful bride, beautiful smile, beautiful eyes. The tiara is a little strangely placed on the forehead, maybe too much upfront to my taste. Nice to see à wedding in St-Petersburg.

Beautiful bride but there is something strange. On some of the photos you can see that she is wearing a stiff step-in or even a corset under her gown. On the last photo where she is sitting in the car one can see it clearly. Her silhouette is not natural. But she has such a beautiful smile. Carla

    1. I agree, very odd. It'd be better to let it just fit her natural shape and not be so tight.

    3. You can blame the the couturier (Reem Acra) for that. Someone in his team does not know that boning going right over the bust in that way was never intended for full chested persons. It is a beautiful silhouette for small chested women and gives lovely sleek lines. For a fuller figure they should have known that as soon as she had to bend anywhere plumper bits were going to be pushed somewhere that was not intended. It should have been taken into account and a different type of structuring chosen. She looked like she could not even breath. Pity because those simple lines if properly fitted would have looked very nice on her. It looks like they tried to minimise instead of just going with the flow.

    A splendid and beautiful wedding!

P Victoria is resplendant in her understated yet grand gown, and I really like the texture, sheen, and hue of this fabric. The cut of the dress is appropriate and neither too little nor too much for the cathedral. Perhaps in need of slight fit adjustments, but all in all, a very successful, memorable, timeless bridal ensemble.

If she asked me, I would suggest that her gorg Chaumet tiara be placed a bit further back behind the hairline, to soften the effect. Her earrings are gorg.

I was excited (and yes, jelly) when she visited Chaumet to select her tiara. I think she chose well, this is a modern, delicate, bold tiara. What an amazing experience that must have been…

Other photos of the reception show her hair down and the tiara looks even better, placed very well in her frizure.

On my list of fave hair/tiara/veil royal bridal looks, I have Q Max, P Maddy, P Char to name just a few. I also have royal brides whose tiaras I’d adjust (slightly and politely) and that includes CP Mary, D Kate, Sophie Wessex amongst a few others. These relaxing musings are my version of fashion fun and games to ponder, especially when I’m not relaxing. Thinking about tiaras is a great way to pass the time whilst gardening in summer or shoveling snow in winter!

Most importantly, wishing the bride and groom a lifetime of happiness!

  13. A very happy couple, she is a lovely lady, but the dress doesn't look well fit, too tight in the bust area i think couple of inches will make a difference. I find the tiara too modern, there were other options she could choose. Wishing them a happy marriage.

  14. My word! There are some grouchy, over critical people on here! The bride looked beautiful! Don't spoil her big day with mean comments! The whole bridal outfit was amazing and beautiful! She made a stunning bride! The whole wedding was beautiful! May they be very happy together!

Nobody is being grouchy or overly critical. This site is about fashion and clothing - people are critiquing that. Nobody is spoiling her big day - she's hardly stopping in the middle of her wedding to read comments on here - and nobody has said anything mean about her. They have commented on the execution of her dress that's all!
