I don't quite see the issue with the hand holding. In one of the Norwegian Royal Family's summer pictures, we saw Princess Märtha Louise holding hands with Queen Sonja and she is in her 40s! It's an affectionate gesture.

  5. Nobody does ‘summer casual’ like the men in the SRF! Here, King Felipe looks very smart in his white jeans and blue and white striped dress shirt. The interesting part is the pairing of the black belt with the blue/gray loafers. Usually, the rules of royal fashion for men in Europe dictate a strict cohesion between the belt color and the shoe color. Yet this black belt - blue gray shoe combination works. Why? If you look closely, the soles of his Majesty’s loafers are black. So when the eye picks up the belt color in the soles of the shoes, the entire ensemble becomes harmonious. Well done! A great summer look for any gentleman.

Letizia stuns again. I just love her dress. Keeping with the season and region, her shoes are perfect. The girls look great again, as does Felipe. He dresses casually better than most royal men. Queen Sofía has mantained all her Greek family with the money of the Spaniards, wearing Valentino and the best designers. She did not want to get divorced, when Juan Carlos asked for It.., because of the money...she has played the victim..and has supported her daughter's husband Who is in prison...she is not a Queen anymore, the Constitution does not allow two Queens..

    3. Why should her popularity be kept in mind? It's statistic valued only in promoting the monarchy itself but essentially useless. Sofia rarely functions in the day to day representation of the institution and speaks even less, A reminder: People who are paid to conduct polls must keep in mind that the results will determine if they are hired in the future, so the results are often what the poll seeker wanted.
Whether Sofia deserves it or not, the impression she gives by corralling Leonor in any outing where they are together is not a good look. There is almost a defiance in her demeanor, as the mother clearly is not pleased. One consequences of putting the Palma incident on a global platform to embarrass the mother has exposed her to scrutiny as well. and not all of it favorable. Ana One

  13. I love Queen Letizia's dress. The girls are both charming with their gorgeous hairstyles. I like all three. In reference to her grandmother's holding Leonor's hand, it is a way of drawing attention to her emeritus since she ignores the youngest of her granddaughters, Sofi.
I think Leonor looked uncomfortable in that situation, because she can take her by the arm, and not by the hand, also when the emerita is on stage, we can never have a "family" photo because she monopolizes it while ignoring the youngest Sofi.
I hope this ends once Eleanor comes back from Wales, and Grandma can't do this anymore. There are many ways to show love, but this is excessive and uncomfortable. Queen Letizia tries not to exclude Sofi from all the events of her family and it must be very upsetting for her, seeing how her mother-in-law excludes Letizia's little daughter.

I prefer not to judge something so normal as a grandmother holding their grandchildren's hands. There is one thing that seems to escape some of the bloggers, and that is that Spniards are very affectionate, they salute each other men/women with cheek kisses, men give bear hugs to their friends while loudly patting their backs, women often entwine arms while walking in groups. They love well and loud, and nobody thinks that this type of closeness is unusual.
Of course at some point teenagers are a little embarrassed by their moms/ grandmoms being overly affectionate while in public, but soon enough they embrace this behavior.
The entire family looks great, and the Queen's dress is fantastic.

MW, that is not true. There are plenty of pictures out there of Sofia with her arm around or holding hands with her other grandchildren. She has also often held hands with Sofia junior and on this very outing, she also linked arms with Sofia junior. Those pictures weren't published here but you can find them on Instagram or elsewhere.
Back when they got on better, Sofia also used to walk arm in arm with Letizia.
If you look at the video of this outing, Sofia junior was also holding hands with Queen Sofia's sister and helping her along. Later, in some of the pictures that are being interpreted as Letizia giving Queen Sofia annoyed looks, Letizia was actually looking back at Princess Irene and checking on her. She also put her arm around her at one point.

The Queen’s dress is okay but I disagree with the first posters re arm envy. In spite of my ‘bingo wings’ I promise I am NOT jealous but I think that over toned arms are not attractive. Compare with the model. Note to those who get excited about these things: this is my opinion. @Texshan I completely agree with you about wishing you could still hold your grandmother's hand. I miss my grandma so very much.

I see this situation very differently. There have been numerous times that the former queen has grabbed one of the girls and posed for a quick picture. Felipe and Letizia have been protective of their girls, and have agreed to times that they will let the girls pose for pictures. No family member, whether they agree or not, has a right to go against the parents wishes. There have also been times that she is clearly forcing herself on the girls in public. It would be interesting to know if she is as grabby in private as well. If it is only in public, they have every right to be annoyed. It does look that way because we have seen her pull them for a picture. My family is very affectionate, especially with grandma, but the teens and older typically take grandma's arm in a protective way, not hold hands. We do have mostly boys though. I think it is more the years of watching this happen that dictate the direction of my thoughts here. I also think these girls are very well brought up to tolerate this. Sadly, many teens would not be as patient. I have seen that this is a topic discussed on other royal sites as well. ~d

If one reads into these people, one can find out a lot of things. There are biographies etc.
Queen Sofia was raised to be Queen. She has had a lot of grief with her husband and what she has always enjoyed and held onto is being a royal. She loves these holidays on Mallorca, all the activities and being photographed.
Letizia hates these public holidays on Mallorca, she prefers private ones.
Letizia likes being in control - of her image, of what information gets out there, of her daughters' lives, everything.
Sofia and Letizia used to get on very well. Who knows what happened, did Letizia wait until she was Queen and had the power? Did they fall out over Sofia's daughter Christina or was Sofia not to be controlled? Was it Sofia's love of being photographed?
Sofia lives next door to Felipe, Letizia and the girls but she is not allowed to visit. She only sees the girls a couple of times per year and when she does, she clutches on.
Leonor and Sofia are also not allowed to see Christina's children anymore - because of their father's crimes. Likewise have certain members of Letizia's family been frozen out when they were not to be controlled, such as her niece Carla.
The girls have to live by strict rules, they have to study a lot, a lot of languages, the dog is not allowed inside the house, sugar and carbs are not to be eaten and they are always nicely dressed and perfectly pleasant and well behaved. Not all bad, but a bit much perhaps.

    1. In this comment I see a lot of "junk" fonts. The queen does not see her granddaughters because she lives permanently outside of Spain. Sofia was raised to be queen? Is that why she tried it first with Haakon and since there were no more princes left she stayed with Juan Carlos? She is clear, she wanted to be queen and she got it but now she does not understand that she and she IS NOT QUEEN and that the education of the princess and the infanta corresponds to her mother, Queen Letizia.
The confrontation with the emerita, if it exists, should have started as soon as the emerita laid stones on the road to her husband's reign, publicly defending Iñaki and wanting to introduce Cristina, taking her daughter's side and her with that attitude , seriously harmed Felipe.
The emerita also put everyone in a difficult situation, by skipping the protocol on the day of Easter Mass, putting a girl in the focus of the world's cameras, since the pact is photos outside the church and not inside ( by the way taking photos inside a PRIVATE church is a horror in terms of respect for the church)
The emerita wants to continue ruling, and she has not taken a single step back as if Beatrix did at the time of her.
The emerita only takes LEONOR's hand, and she always challenges the queen, even at the Princess of Asturias Awards, she also tries to be by her side at all times, breaking protocol. If you watch the video, she does not want to be the last, as she corresponds, and she leaves the carpet to be with Leonor.
It is an ongoing challenge and a headache
If she wants to see her granddaughters, only she has to go to two meters and stop living in London and Greece

Queen Sofia spends time in London and Greece, but still lives at Zarzuela. It is Sofia herself, who has told journalists in private talks that she is not allowed to visit Leonor and Sofia. Likewise, when she invites all her grandchildren to lunch, Leonor and Sofia are the ones who are not allowed to attend.

It is not just gossip, but very well known that Letizia likes to control everything.
The incident you mention, is just another example. Letizia ruled no pictures within the church, Sofia takes a picture with the grandchildren despite that and Letizia freaks out! How is that reasonable?

Lol I don't know how much you know about the Dutch Royal Family, but Beatrix is actually another royal, who has always liked to be a control ;)
Not so much since she left the position of Queen perhaps, but I'm pretty sure she does give her opinion on her son's reign at times. She's certainly a very confident and opinionated character, probably more so than Sofia.

But another difference there is that her daughters in law certainly let her do a lot with her grandchildren, also without them present. When Leonor and Sofia went to the theatre or cinema with their grandmother years ago, Letizia always came along. She can't even let them go on an outing alone with their grandmother, she always has to supervise.

Btw I don't dislike Queen Letizia, there are many things she does well. She dresses impeccably, is usually very nice towards the public and yes, unlike with Juan Carlos or Christina's husband, you won't find any criminal activities or shady deals with Letizia and Felipe. She wears more affordable brands than many other royals and she rewars her clothes, that's great and environmentally friendly.

I maintain that these are Sofia and Letizia's faults. Sofia loves attention and Letizia loves control. But otherwise, though they have done things differently, they both did/ do a good job as Queen.

Sofia was raised to be Queen by her mother, yes. That's what often happened in those days with the royals. Princes were raised as heirs, Princesses were raised to marry a Prince, ideally one that would be King! So yes, she was raised to be Queen Consort, that's what I mean.
True, Sofia's mother first thought of Harald of Norway for her daughter and she apparently liked him too. Harald's father thought great, but Harald was always dedicated to Sonja, a commoner but his one love :)
Sofia supposedly also didn't like the cold climate in Norway though. Spain's climate is obviously much more similar to Greece's.

In my humble opinion people judge too quickly based on a few photos, if you checked the whole video and pictures in other publications you would’ve had seen the grandmother holding hands as well with Sofia, and other affectionate interactions. It seems like some people in Spain have to be team Letizia or team Sofia, and although I am sure that there could be tensions, and different points of view regarding their family dynamics, I don’t think that is any worse than in most families. I think is sad to pass such hard judgement just because a grandmother is a little clingy, and make comments that are somewhat demeaning towards all of them.
    Just my two cents.
Have a wonderful day and spread the love.

I think that the hand holding and affection is more for Leonor’s PR than anything else, as we all remember she was seen in infamous video swatting Sofia’s hand away from her shoulder, a gesture that anyone could have done in the middle of the argument, but was seeing as many as rude and impatient and the monarchy ( and Letizia’s) haters promptly described her as bratty and unfit for her future role. After that the Royal House has made sure that both of them appear close and friendly on every public appearance. These outings are planned as well as any official act.

    1. The problem is that the fault was only the emerita, for skipping the protocol and denying the orders given by the kings, because the emerita does not understand her new position.
It is also due to the confrontation between the position of both, Letizia and Sofía, regarding Iñaki. Sofía has defended to the death, putting her son and therefore the future of her granddaughter in a very bad place, and she does not miss an opportunity to put Queen Letizia in a bad place, who is the one who is against affairs murky Iñaki and Cristina.
However, Letizia seems much better than all of them, since she allows her cousins, (Sofi's knee injury, Irene did, with a push in Marivent last summer), to visit her house and continue being close with Leonor and Sofía. We have never seen a kind or affectionate gesture from Cristina with her nieces.
This year, Isabella called her mother "crazy" publicly, but no one made a fuss about her bad behavior ... How curious

@CB. As soon as the photographers thanked them for stopping Sofia let go of grandma's elbow and drifted closer to her mother. Grandma tucked Leonor closer to her side. Letizia will receive the bulk of the criticism if she reacts negatively. The parents have done a good thing letting her live away from the pressure of her future role and the expectations of the adults around her.
@Anon 18:38 a visit to the kiosk will also give a lot of information, but where does it come from? Which mother does not want the kids to study? You have no evidence that the Queen likes control but some one said it so it must be true. The dog must be at least 25 years old by now, but it makes a good story. M.

Of course she let go of grandma's elbow, when this is what she learns from her mother: pretend to get on with Sofia in public and ignore her in private. What else will these girls think when their mother teaches them that grandma is not a likable person and should be avoided, and when their mother doesn't let them see Sofia more often than a couple of times a year. They can't even develop a close relationship seeing her so rarely.

It's not from the kiosk, it's from biographies published on them, by journalists who have done a lot of research! Not saying that everything in there is true, but the gist of things probably is.

And so many people have said that Letizia is controlling, they can't have all made this up out of thin air. If I have no evidence that Letizia is controlling, what is your evidence to prove that Sofia is so terrible and does not care for her granddaughters beyond publicity?

The dog, Sarah, is not 25 years old, but was given to Leonor on the occasion of her first communion by her father.

Of course, a mother wants them to study but all their upbringing is rather strict and they have to study soo many languages: Catalan, Basque, Galician, English, French, Arabic, Chinese...

You conveniently ignored my point about the food restrictions that Letizia has for the girls, perhaps because you know it's true? No sugar, fried food and carbohydrates - and it's known because Letizia got their school to change the food they serve according to these rules. Some of the other parents were not happy about this!

It's not good for children to never have carbohydrates or fat! Also some cake or ice cream is sometimes nice to have ;)
Obviously you are controlling, yes. Great that you agree with Letizia on everything and don't allow pets in the house. How lovely!
I'm not saying children should have burgers every day. But carbohydrates are not evil - bread, pasta, rice etc - and to decide what the whole school eats just because she is Queen and her daughters go there, is crazy!

Actually, you have not understood well as you obviously do not speak Spanish, they only eat handmade sweets or pasta or icecreams...not the ones with Palm oil and those things...you should improve your castellano, you would no say nonsenses. I agree that animals at home is not a good idea, I have never have one either.. Actually these weeks lots of Nestlé products have been retired because they contain things that produce cáncer...
Hamburguers are not a thing we eat in Spain, we eat lots of fish, the Mediterranean diet...so It is not so weird...

@Susana, reading your comments it’s rather obvious that you have a very strong opinion about the relationship between this family, so much so that you seem to know exactly what goes on inside their lives. They are intensively private and other than the rumors printed by the gossiping press, all we know is what is in plain view. Regarding the incident in Palma it became clear that the emeritus queen crossed the line, but also that the current queen wasn’t unable to control the situation and provoked a scene that put her and the princess on a very difficult position, and consequently has a to mend fences very publicly for the next few weeks. Fair or not, Queen Sofia is the most loved member of the Royal family. I personally believe that the entire family have made Letizia’s life a living hell, and the relationship is hard to navigate. Also for those that say that Sofia doesn’t speak Spanish well, that is absolutely untrue, she obviously has a foreign accent like most when not speaking their native tongue, but her vocabulary and grammar are totally acceptable.

@Marisa: Letizia sacrificed herself to deflect the bullying away from a 12 year old girl. That is what mothers do. Sofia's disrespect of her DIL was brushed under the rug.
Pictures of the event had already been published on Sunday, and the family had moved on to another event when this was offered on Tuesday or Wednesday on Twitter 'accidentally' with Letizia as the villain and with tape cut or slowed down for analysis from the talking heads and with the harshest criticism from Sofia 'niece'.
With all of her famed popularity, Sofia would have been forgiven immediately by the Spaniards if she had said 'blame me, the child was overwhelmed'. Instead she kept silent. Many a grandmother would not want this child's clean slate marred by such a thing knowing what is at stake. That is why the mother sacrificed herself. Chapeau to her! She is a better woman than most, in light of all that you have said.

The mother did not sacrifice herself. The mother taught the girl to dislike her grandmother. The mother wiped off the grandmother's kiss and pulled the girl away from the grandmother, before the girl ever pulled away herself. Leonor shook off her grandmother's hand because a) her mother has taught her to dislike her grandmother. And b) because her mother had already made it obvious that she didn't wish the grandmother to be around her.
Then Leonor shook off her grandmother's hand and Letizia completely freaked out, telling the grandmother off as Felipe tried to mediate and Juan Carlos looked on with a look of "have they all gone crazy?"

@16:16 You yourself are telling us that Sofia told the press that she was not allowed to see the girls. What did she want to happen? Instead of working out their problems behind the scenes she allowed the gossip press and trolls to criticize her DIL. How does that improve their relationship? These things cause unnecessary arguments for a couple. She could easily have asked her son for specific visits that work within the kids schedule. Letizia appears not to trust her to have the press waiting to take pictures for the kiosk magazines. For example, all 4 of her granddaughters went to see Billy Elliot with her. Guess which one was kept to one side and held in what @Beth above calls an iron grip. https://www.newmyroyals.com/2018/05/spanish-royals-watched-billy-elliots.html

Letizia did not control anything about those Easter services. Try not to make things up. The family was posing outside the church long before she entered. The pictures are there to prove it. All of the adults behaved badly that day, but again, no one mentions that the tape was saved for TWO days later and posted on the web.
The gossips say the menu at school was changed to exclude sugary foods and commercially baked goods. Other parents also exclude them to avoid unhealthy additives and preservatives. There is more control when things are prepared fresh, or at home.
