Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako spoke online with people in Fukushima Prefecture who were severely affected by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami as well as the subsequent meltdowns at Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc.’s crippled Fukushima No. 1 power plant.

The Emperor and Empress were briefed by Fukushima Governor Masao Uchibori on the progress in post-disaster reconstruction work in the northeastern prefecture. Afterwards, they made a virtual visit to the tsunami and nuclear disaster memorial museum in Futaba, where all residents have been evacuated. The Empreror and Empress then had an online conversation with six survivors from the towns of Futaba and Okuma.
