  1. So incredibly sad to hear this today. Can't imagine how sad it is for the Queen after 73years of marriage. He was always one of my favourite royals--not afraid to speak his mind and knowledgeable about so many things. A real inspiration in making such an impressive life after a truly rough start. "Well done, good and faithful servant" Rest in peace, your Royal Highness

  7. I'm saddened by this. My deepest condolences to the Royal Family and especially to the Queen. So much turmoil in her life and now she has to face it without her husband, who has always been of great support. She spent most of her life with him and now he's gone...
My thoughts are with them all.

  10. Sad news. Condolences to Her Majesty and her family.
Together, may they all have peace and comfort during this time of mourning.

A chapter now closes in his family's history as he is the last of five children of his parents, the Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenburg to die. His four younger sisters have already passed away.
It's now up to the great grand children of Princess Alice and Prince Andrew to keep the family tree alive.
Rest in peace your Royal Highness.

It's Alice von (of) Battenberg, not Battenburg.

I do get confused at times between the berg's and the burg's.

    4. @Deadeggs: Berg = mountain in German. That´s the reason why Battenberg was translated to Mountbatten.

    5. Hello Vanessa.
Thanks for the information regarding the Mountbatten name. Interesting.

  11. I am very sad. He had such bad luck in his early life, grew up under what are certainly traumatizing circumstances, and yet developed such a strength of character, such a positive attitude to things, such a willingness to accept things as they are and do whatever possible to make them a bit better. They don't make them like this anymore, I'm afraid.

    Requiescat in pace.

Agree with you. He seems like a down to earth no nonsense kind of person. Supportive of the queen and not mind being in the background. Condolences to QE and family. May he rests in peace.

  13. Truly the most saddening news. I feared for him since he'd been admitted to a lenghty hospital treatment in February and March, so the news of his passing did not come totally unexpected, still as a shock, nonetheless. You do not see many people of his class, conduct, and stamina around these days. They become fewer and fewer now, unfortunately. He'd shown to the world what the term "unwavering support to crown and country" truly meant, and many could learn a lesson or two from his steady commitment and devotion to the monarchy. A great one leaves this world forever. Sad day, indeed.

  15. God bless him and the Queen. Anyone could see they loved each other deeply, and he did his duty being her consort. Yes, he was prone to gaffs but he also supported her in all ways. I feel so much for Her Majesty right now. He was an interesting man who lived through a lot. I look forward to reading a book or two about him.

      To explain your ???
I live in France and work in both English and French languages.
Philip (English) is spelt in French as Philippe.
Sometimes I forget what language I'm working in and little mistakes like that creep into my work.

A very sad day. I feel very sorry for the Queen and I hope she will be able to cope with his passing. I saw many special programmes on German TV yesterday about the death of the Duke of Edinburgh. The end of an era. So very sad...Frieda
