Today is February 23 and Emperor Naruhito of Japan celebrates his 61st birthday. The Imperial Household Agency cancelled the emperor’s customary public greetings from the palace balcony, and other palace events for his birthday were scaled down due to the pandemic. On the Emperor's birthday, visitors usually come to the imperial palace to offer good wishes and sign a guestbook — a practice that dates back to 1948.
In the Imperial Palace, the Emperor received congratulations from Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko as well as the leaders of the executive, legislative and judicial branches including Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga. The event, attended also by Empress Masako, had a smaller number of participants than usual. This year, there was no lunch feast with guests or celebratory tea party with foreign ambassadors.
The Emperor looks very nice is his casual attire. He appears younger. The Empress is beautiful in the bluish/lilac pant suit. The royal blue top she is wearing in the last two pictures is gorgeous. Wish we could see her entire outfit. Happy Birthday, Emperor Naruhito!
