An alfajor or alajú, plural alfajores is a traditional dessert made in some regions of Spain and in parts of Latin America, including Paraguay, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Southern Brazil, Cuba and Mexico. It is produced in the form of a small cylinder.

The recipe shared by Queen Maxima is as the following:
For the dough: 300 grams cornstarch, 200 grams flour, 200 grams butter (at room temperature), 150 grams sugar, 4 egg yolks, 1 teaspoon baking soda (sodyum bicarbonate), 2 teaspoons baking powder, a small vanilla crust or a pinch of vanilla powder, 1 fresh lemon zest, 1 teaspoon brandy

For filling and decoration: dulce de leche (home-made or available from supermarket, with condensed milk and sugar), grated coconut.

Preheat the oven to 160 degrees. Mix all dry ingredients with the softened butter in a bowl. Add the egg yolks and brandy and knead by hand into a firm dough. Form a ball and let it rest for about an hour.

Roll out the dough into a rag from 5 mm to 7 mm and cut out circles of dough (with a glass) of about 4 cm in diameter.

Then place the rounds on a baking tray lined with baking paper, about 2 cm apart. Bake the cookies at 160 degrees for 10-12 minutes. The biscuits should discolour a little, not too much otherwise they will become too dry and break.

When the cookies are ready, take them out of the oven and let them cool. Always stick two cookies together with a layer of dulce de leche. Spread the dulce de leche well to the edge.

Oh so yummy! But as an Argentinian myself I wouldn't call it a dessert, but a snack, for sure a very hight in calories snack haha!. Love then at school when I was a little girl...This time I like the way she combed her hair and the Gucci shirt she wore. Lovely print.
    Bluma.

This is perfect - just proves that EVERYONE is getting in on the 'cooking at home' gig during these pandemic times, lol. I like these sandwich cookies and have made them a few times. But I put less dulce de leche in the middle because I find it too sweet.

Happy Birthday to absolutely fabulous, Queen Maxima!

She rocks amazing royal jewels with a regal style all her own, and yet celebrates her own personal style that is relatable, fun and down to earth.

A queen who bakes for her birthday while wearing an orange diamond ring is a modern royal that I would love to meet.

    2. Me too. Totally agree. Queen Maxima does it her way and why not?
As I've said before, she has the beauty of imperfection.
