  1. Love the colour but not the dress for Sophie. Too unforgiving

I like the dress, colour and style, not trivial choise

I'm not normally big fan of Sophie's fashion choices, but this dress looks very good on her. It'surprising because these shiny fabrics could be quite risky. -Siri

    Wow, Sophie!
    Very nice!

  6. I don´t like satin or anything shiny, so I´m not fond of this outfit. But given the fact that a dress like this is extremely difficult to wear (it´s fairly unforgiving), she manages to look surprisingly good in it.
Fabrics like this need a very good lining/understructure (or else everything will show - any bodily imperfections and every detail of one´s underwear), yet to get the right "flow" of the fabric, the design can´t be to structured. Tricky material. Best avoided.
    Gorgeous colour on Sophie though.

  7. Why Sofie, why won't you wear a proper brassiere? This is an exquisite dress (I had one very similar more than 20 years ago) the color is fabulous, the length is flattering, is floaty, fluid and so feminine, in fact she seems to be a little thinner around the belly area, so the dress is not hugging her as this fabric tend your do, and yet the lack of proper undergarments spoils the outfit.

    1. I agree!! It is so often the weak point, I don't understand why.

Proper brassieres and too-tight tops are a problem with several European royal ladies. You'd think with all their money and access to fashion experts that their bustlines could look as good as ours (I'm serious).

The color of Sophie's dress is stunning. This fabric, however, on anyone unfortunately shows every bodily flaw. The skirt looks like it's unlined and clingy. The dress looks uncomfortable to wear. I don't like the fit of the shoulders, and the sleeves at the top are puckered and you can see the outline of the seam allowance. It looks like a 'hot" (i.e. temperature) dress to wear.

Beautiful color aside, a thumbs-down from me on this one.

What kind of bra should she wear then? That’s the way a woman with two kids looks at her age, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. The dress is stylish and original, and the colour suits her perfectly. And she looks glowingly happy and healthy, wonderful!

@Laurel..what do you think of the other satin dress in this picture. There is a lot of detail to it. MB

I like the color of this dress, but a bit too shiny for me.

Sophie has the most beautiful smile and eyes in the British royal family.

I think she actually looks very good in this and it's also nice to see her with a bit of makeup on. I know the norm in the royal family is to go "all natural" (or as much as possible) but I've always though Sophie could benefit from a little foundation - or at least a tinted moisturizer - to even out her skin tone and give a little bit of color. Often, to me, she looks a bit washed out. Not bad, just needing a bit of color, or blush, or something.

I love her in this dress and colour, and agree with the others that this is a tough type of dress to wear, but she does look surprisingly fab in it.
She seems to be glamming it up a bit for the past couple of events, particularly noticeable in her makeup and hair. I couldn't be happier for her, and look forward to seeing her in some more unusual but successful outfits.

  12. Not usually a fan of shiny satin fabrics either or very high necklines but totally won over by the gorgeous colour and the fact that it looks really lovely on our Countess

  14. Why has there never been any comments that she looks very similar to Princess Diana? Similar hairstyle, same hair colour, and very similar facial features.

    1. It was mentioned when she first came on the royal scene in the 90s. But the likeness is fairly superficial (similar age, short blond hair) and it's no longer relevant.

What blog are you reading? Nobody is picking anybody apart. All comments are about fashion which is what the forum is about. No opinions about her character, personality or competence, people are expressing their views on fashion. If you think she looks wonderful that's your opinion, some of us may respectfully disagree. Don't go around creating drama and stating non facts. Nobody here has disrespected or judged this woman, period.

Gorgeous dress, amazing fabric ,beautiful color... BUT: Sophie needs to get some Spanx. This is a Kate Middleton dress, perfect for a super svelte woman without Sophie’s (lovely) curves. If you are curvy, either don’t wear a bias cut satin dress- or tame the bulges with the appropriate undergarments. The Countess looks incredibly uncomfortable. And she needs to get a new hairstylist. Her hairstyle is very matronly- she is a lovely woman and should have a younger look.

    1. Sophie, in my opinion, has a lovely, completely normal figure for a woman of her age with two children. and cameras can be brutal. She is not a model, so why should she wear Spanx? I also find the CONSTANT remarks regarding royal busts and proper bras etc. etc. far too personal and therefore offensive.

    2. @Virginia, in the fashion world, waist, hips, bust, length, silhouette, shoulder, sleeves, etc., are normal words, I can't imagine why would this be offensive? I agree with you that Sofie has a normal healthy figure, and she doesn't have to change anything about her body, my "personal " opinion ( and that is what debate is about) is that elegance and appropriateness begins under the dress, I won't go out with a see thru garment showing my undies, or wear something so thigh that the handles or behind are spilling out, I won't wear a strapless top if that meant going without a bra at my not so tender age, for that reason I think that a proper bra is a very good idea for any woman above an A cup, or after a certain age. I would apologize if my words are offensive to you, but I don't think there is anything remotely hurtful or unsavory about my "personal" view. You going have to scroll down if you find it offensive.
      Regards

    3. Dear Cherry Blossom, All this is a misunderstanding, I do not feel offended, I consider it offensive for the person who is being criticised, but you are not the only one to make such remarks and I certainly appreciate your apology. I know that you are very good at going into fashion details whereas I feel more comfortable with other aspects. Somehow I wish to protect those who prefer a more relaxed approach to their appearance.

  17. I do love the combination silk/satin, beautiful fabric, the colour is sublime. Love the length and has enough flounce. I do feel you need to be a certain body shape and height to wear this type of gown successfully. Regardless Sophie looks lovely.

Oh, what a difficult dress to wear... that fabric and model is extremly unforgiving. But I think she pulls it off rather well.
But compare to the green dress beside her, with the clever design.
Soo much easier to wear. Can flatter a lot of different bodies..

  20. Anything satiny that's cut on the bias doesn't always hang right. This one does. A gorgeous dress on a gorgeous woman. I also love the color. Well done, Sophie!
