This is a rare miss for me. The collar looks suffocating and the skirt looks like tight upholstery. -MO

I agree with you. Those were my immediate thoughts as well when I saw the full outfit. These icy colours don't compliment Letizia's warm burnished skin tones. The skirt print may have a strong and beautiful cultural history, but to the majority who don't know or recognize what it is, it looks like curtain brocade from a distance. I might have liked the outfit better if it were in richer colours which we know suit Letizia so well.

    2. Agree completely! It’s a horrid mix of fabrics and styles. The collar is the nail on the coffin!

It resembles the outfits women wear in Spain back in the day....it is not for the majority...it is for us....She dresses for her people , she even do not care about other countries...
Curtain?? What a nonsense!!, for the Spaniards hats are ridiculous from the distance. ..you should stop wearing them...

The majority in this English speaking blog, in the Spanish speaking papers, everybody knows it.....There are 480 millions of native Spanish speaking and 577 including people who manage....

      Majority??

  2. Wow!! This is one of the best outfits I have seen in a while. Created by Duyos, local designer and inspired on the fabrics of the ever so elegant Spanish mantón de Manila, nobody seems to agree as to whether the fabric is just inspired or an actual mantón, or if it has been repurposed to create this dress. It's sophisticated, it has a little Parisian vintage on it, and she looks fabulous. I LOVE ❤️ IT

The typical Spanish "fala tubo" ( tube skirt) women used to wear in the XX century in Spain. She dresses like that when she visits the Cervantes institute. In Iberoamerica the love our culture and they are our majority Spanish speaking countries.

Love this, although it is unusual choice for her.

    7. I agree with Cherry, I love this outfit. The sheen to the blouse is gorgeous, the skirt is obviously marvelous quality. She can wear thicker, heavy brocade fabrics because she has the slender figure for it. She looks beautiful.

Hmmm...I don’t love this. The skirt is pulling (or creased?) across her hips and the blouse is kind of busy with its contrast collar and cuffs. It all looks a bit prim to me. (V.M.)

  4. What a beautiful new outfit (unless I missed it before) and I really like how the collar matches the skirt and as usual the whole look is totally appropriate for the another day in the office. Just love Queen Letizia!!

  5. I´m not thinking upholstery because of the exquisite pattern and fresh colour. I think it´s a lovely fabric, and while I usually don´t like shiny stuff, I think in this case, it works. My problem here is with the fit though: the skirt is both too tight and too long.

  7. I have reservations about this outfit. My first reaction was fabulous but while I like the pattern in the skirt and the matching collar the skirt looks crumpled across the stomach, (unless that is part of the design). I'm not keen on the shiny fabric in the top and while I like the collar matching the skirt it looks too tight and constricting. Having said all that, it's still a lovely look for this always elegant and sophisticated lady.

It is a traditional skirt "falda tubo" in Spain...women dressed like that..It reminded me my mum when she was young..

Women did not dress to be comfortable if not to be perfect, at least in Spain.

    3. Thanks for that information, Anon 10 06. I had not heard the term before. I searched on google and found images of loads of gorgeous skirts. It is like a variation on a pencil skirt but with a higher waistline? It looks so elegant, but you do need to be pretty slim to wear one.

  9. I'm quite surprised by this look from Letizia. The skirt is lovely and the length is OK for me, however, it looks very tight around the hips. Wonderful fabric though, gorgeous!
The top is nice but to me, I think she wasn't wearing the right bra for this top; it looks like it is too small or ill-fitting.

The event was to promote the Spanish language and culture. The Cervantes institut was set up fir that. So she is dressed into a Manton de Manila, handmade embrodered who is a jewel to a museum.
As someone has pointed out, the skirt is the traditional in Spain and the satin blouse matching.
Here there are a lot if wise people who has no idea at all....I have not seen any Spaniard criticising traditional lutfits of other countries!!

    What a rudeness!!

    1. Dear Maria, I understand your point.
But aren't we all allowed to give our opinions about fashion? That's what this blog is about, I think...

    2. Anonymous3/10/19 17:06

Obviously, I can say that hats are horrid, the coat dresses a disaster and both totally outdated, etc....and the traditional dresses some royals wear ridiculous...., because in my country is considered like that.
      My opinion...

These people are Queens not actrecess, her fashion is determined sometimes....What's fashion?? Why in some countries are they wearing things in others not....., you are not speaking about fashion only and in Norway, Sweden some people have complained also....in other countries because they do not read it...imagine Japan when the Emperor is still considered as God....

Some people in these blog only judge fashion under their culture...
You shoul travel more and learn more to can speak...I would not dare to speak about "fashion" in some countries I do not know at all, in the end one comes across as ridiculous.

Education and diplomacy, in this life you always can give an opinion in a polite way.

Here some people are loosing it and not only with Spain, in other foros people are saying that here English speaking people are who can give their opinions about other countries , not about fashion, traditions at weddings, funerals, etc....

    4. Maria, I personally love this outfit, but everybody is entitled to their own opinion about fashion, I haven't seen any comments that were rude or disrespectful, some people are more gracious than others when commenting, and some have personal " dislikes " of certain royals. It doesn't matter from which country you come, in order to opine, the best part is when people let us know about certain cultural details, that help us to understand some of the choices , please continue to inform us about you ,but there is nothing to be offended about on this instance.

@CherryB. Like you, watching this lady since she became Queen, it is a treat to see the evolution of her style, and how she can achieve such a polished effect with moderately priced items. She is aware that every outing is photographed and viewed around the world (not only in Latin America) and sometimes it is very evident that the garment chosen relates to the theme. This particular outfit is an example. Other posters have explained the significance, which helps learn more about Spanish fashion.
Having an opinion for some, means the right to make disparaging comments about a garment, ..or the wearer, allowing them to ignore context, cultural relevance and inspiration. This leaves us with stacked bracelets that are 'trashy', richly hand embroidered fabrics that look like 'curtains', and classic double breasted linen blazers that look like 'lab coats'. Not every garment looks good or hangs well. In reality, they are the product of updated forms of weaving, dyeing, and printing, that have existed for centuries. Belle.

  14. Letizia is a knockout! I would love to own this outfit myself. Letizia has a great eye for style, and I will always appreciate that she does not play it safe with boring clothes. The only thing I am not completely on board with is the color of the shoes and bag, though it would probably mean custom shoes and bag for this outfit to have the perfect tone. Wow, this is stunning!

Hmmm. I am of two minds - I like the idea of it, however the fit is quite bad and the shiny, crinkled fabric of the skirt is what strikes me first. Whilst I don’t think ‘curtains’ (much as I actually have very, very similar fabric in my guest bedroom both as curtains and beadspread), I understand why to the English and maybe French readers it brings back toile prints on drapes and couches. If we were to score this on a scale of 1 to 10, it’s somewhere in the 6-6.5 area for me (couldn’t get myself to type 7). Surely others will disagree...

Traditional or modern...whichever it is the whole look is fabulous. The skirt and blouse fit perfectly. The fabric of both is quite pretty and smartly styled hair is a great finishing touch.

  21. I love this unreservedly. The fit is *not* too tight; that's just the way fabric of this kind wears when in motion. If it were one bit looser, it would hang awkwardly. And the COLORS! So very pretty with the sheen of the materials. And finally yes, it is exceedingly prim, but since when did 'prim' become a criticism? -Rosa Bianca
