On the evening of 10 September 2026, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako visited the National Museum of Western Art in Taito City to view an exhibition featuring prints by Rembrandt, one of the leading Dutch painters of the 17th century. The exhibition comprises approximately 130 works and documents, primarily from the collections of the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam and the National Museum of Western Art.

Their Majesties listened to explanations about the works, including the fact that many of the copperplate prints, created using the etching technique, had been printed on Japanese washi paper. During his official visit to the Netherlands in June this year, the Emperor viewed Rembrandt’s renowned masterpiece The Night Watch at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

What stood out to me is her scarf has a touch of grey that pulls in the colour of the emperor’s trousers and jacket. Very clever
