The Duke and Duchess of Sussex Plan to Move Back to the United Kingdom

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are planning to return to live in the United Kingdom, six years after leaving for the United States. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, along with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, are expected to relocate later in August to a non-royal residence. The property is believed to be outside London, and the children are expected to start school in September.

When the Duke and Duchess stepped down as working members of the Royal Family in 2020, the late Queen Elizabeth II ruled that they could retain their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles but would no longer use their “Royal Highness” (HRH) styling. The couple have continued to use their Duke and Duchess titles while living in California, but they will not be able to resume using their HRH styling when they return to the UK at the end of the month.

I'm praying for them. I think it very likely they're doing great financially. I pray those vipers have some decency and the kids are out of bounds. I would stay away from most of the royals and stick with friends. They'd throw those children under the bus to drop any unsavory stories past and present of theirs which they're more than a few. Good luck to them. They're going to need it. Well the Lord. Most importantly.

Well going home again. At the end of the day only family is important. Friends come and go; one has them as long as one is able and willing to give, if one needs them, they are invisible sometimes.
The Sussexes have hurt lots of people was its greed self-importance or just stupidity. Being members of the RF opens lots of doors for best Education for the children and being seen. Being Royalty is not being a Celebrity. Harry should have known that from the get-go. He is born into the RF with that said, come Responsibilities. This post may seem hard to some people it is not that way at all it is Reality. I wish them the best it will take a long time for them to mend fences and regain the trust of family members and the public.

I totally disagree with everything css says and the stay behind royals need to think long and hard about how they supported Meghan. The transition was hard for her, but Kate let lies in the Press lie there - to make her look good and Meghan bad. None of us know what is behind this, it seems unlikely it is a permanent move, so let’s wait and see. Harry has no need to apologise to anyone, neither does Meghan. IMO. LRB

@Anonymous21/8/26 05:00, As a part of the Duchy of Cornwall, Highgrove belongs to Prince William. The king currently has a long-term lease of the property and pays rent to the duchy. When William becomes king the property will automatically belong to Prince George (who will be the Duke of Cornwall as the Prince of Wales).

. @ 5 26. When did the family hurt them back. They have maintained a dignified silence in the face of sometimes outrageous allegations

LRB. Not sure where you get your info from but it’s certainly not a reliable source. Meghan turned down support offered on many occasions. This is well documented. There’s no evidence that the Princess of Wales told lies about Meghan. This is a new one for me. Harry behaved so appallingly that an apology is the least of what he needs to do to make amends.

According the newspapers (not U.K.) I read that royalty watchers are talking about reactions they heared from staff members of the Royal Palace in the U.K.. It starts again the staff members of the Royal Palace who cannot keep their mouth shut. Do we hear the same from other royal houses in other countries ? : "No". In other European royal houses the staff members are much more discrete and yes everywhere there is probably an "employee" of the royal families who is willing to tell something he/she knows or heard from another "maid" whose work is close to this or that prince or princess. But the press is not so quickly in other countries to publish hear saying and gossip like in the U.K.
I hope Harry and Meghan and their children will find peace and serenity in the U.K. and found a house away from the royal cottages and houses.

The Brits court are known for their infighting. They try to make their royal come out on top. We only see this in England. As Harry said he and William agreed never to do this until Harry and Meghan became to popular then all hell broke loose. The royal family has a job to do when it comes to cleaning up their own house, leeks, infighting between different courts and taking away the nasty British media's power.

I would like to think they have lovely motives, but I suspect the reality is they are running out of money, they are having marital discord, Charles is sicker than is publicly known, and/or Harry was about to have immigration problems with remaining in the US. I feel sorry for the Royal Family having to deal with them and hope firm boundaries will be enforced.

Yet funny most of the biographers seem to agree with much of Harry's account and just explained. Attacking a person for not allowing themselves to be lied on says more about you than them. Harry's book sold more than enough to get him a hefty sum. The Netflix contract delivered eight figures, speaking engagements added seven figures, and As Ever is making Meghan millions. They still seem happily married much to the disappointment of bigots. I do believe Charles is sick and Harry is going to try and spend some time with him and let him get to know the kids. No decent person could feel sorry for that family and their weaponization of the press, but I pray Harry keeps his children away from the Wales.

They own a very expensive house in Montectio and are moving to Britain , for a time, and not selling the house. Now who do you know who is short of cash and holds onto a multimillion pound home that they are not using? LRB

    10. Anonymous21/8/26 13:43

LRB you are certainly a staunch supporter of Meghan! I notice that! But I’m always somewhat confused by the progression of your arguments.

Eg if I think they are suffering financially (which I may or may not do), why would it help to have a good long hard look at myself? I don’t understand the logic or association? The two are completely unrelated.

Equally to live in a house in Montecito for a while does not mean you own the property; they likely have a mortgage which is ongoing. Most very wealthy people (or wannabe wealthy people) do not own outright but use debt. Hence they most likely share the ownership with a bank. While they are not there it’s quite likely they will rent it out and earn money on it.

    11. Anonymous21/8/26 14:17

I agree with LRB there is again too much wishful thinking. How do all these commenters know Harry and Meghan are running out of money ? I don't think Harry nor Meghan have ever explained their financial situation to anybody (or maybe just to a counceller). If they would be running out of money and decided to return to the U.K. for good they would have sold their very expensive home in Montecito, California. It has been said also that Harry and Meghan looked for a vacation house in Portugal not far from Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank. This summer they have been in Portugal on vacation, among other places. Maybe they bought something there or they just hired a villa for their stay. If I was them, I would not buy a house anymore in Portugal, with the climate change and the heat the southern part of Europe encountered this summer, many villa's owned by people from European countries (more up north) are for sale and don't cost much money anymore because nobody is interested any more. The same scenario is playing in Spain, Italy, Greece, the south of France, etc... I know a Belgian villa owner in Spain, who came on holiday to Belgium, because it was less warmer in Belgium than in Spain. Of course if you come to Belgium (BeNeLux) you find it less warmer than in Spain f.ex., but nevertheless he said that he was not interested anymore to stay inside during summer because it was really too hot on the beaches.

I'm very happy to hear this news. Apart from whatever acrimony there may be between the various adults, this is the time for the children to get to know their British grandfather, and he to spend more time with them. Also, this is the time and opportunity for the children to get to know their cousins and second cousins, namely William's children, as well as Beatrice's, Eugenie's who are close to their age, and some of the older ones such as Peter Phillips and Zara's children. All the children are the innocent bystanders in the adults squabbles and don't deserve to be deprived of a healthy relationship with their extended family and each other.

I'm not expecting to see much, if any at all, of Meghan and Harry at any of the public BRF annual events since they are not working royals, though they could well get together in private such as at Christmas which of course we will never know or see. Harry is well liked by many of his cousins, and in addition to having a large family on his mothers side to keep him busy, he has a huge circle of influential socialite friends who'd be only too happy to invite him and Meghan to events like Wimbledon and Ascot though not in connection nor in the presence of the Royal Family members who may be there at the time, except if Charles invites him with diplomacy.
I also don't at all think that money is the motivation for their move back to the UK. Both of them have millions in their individual and combined rights, with still more to come from further inheritances.
It will be interesting to see how it all plays out, but again, I am happy for their move for the reasons I've stated above.

I think Harry and Meghan would be well-advised to keep a very low public profile in the UK for a good long while, maybe a year, to let the children get settled and to let their public image, actions, and statements become less a source of continuing conflict. I am not sure they, especially Meghan, are capable of that, but that is what I think they should do. Time will tell. I agree their children have been missing out on what would have been meaningful extended family relationships, but I am not sure how much cousin time they will get. Recall Harry and Meghan weren’t invited to Peter’s recent wedding, and I don’t foresee William letting his children anywhere near Harry and Meghan for a while, maybe forever. I can’t say I blame the Royal Family if they are wary and keep them at arm’s length. Trust once lost is not easily regained. Forgiveness, when it comes, doesn’t mean you have to have a close relationship - indeed, sometimes it is healthier not to.

@Anon 16:32 "Sandringham" isn't the only family Christmas event of the season. There are almost certainly several smaller private ones hosted by other family members that they'll be welcomed at. King Charles wouldn't invite them to anything that would make them or his guests uncomfortable. He has other options as well.

@Royal Watcher: How do you know they weren't invited to Peter's wedding? Are you implying that because they didn't attend that they weren't invited? Goodwill invitations, acknowledging intent but avoiding awkwardness between close friends and family do exist. Secondly, expecting them to lie low and out of the public eye for any period of time is a foolhardy hope and and selfish expectation to their many patronages and interests outside the UK. And it's not just Meghan either. Short of locking themselves in whatever house they choose to live in, you can be sure that the (gutter and other) press will be recording their every move, even if it's opening the front door to pick up the morning milk and newspaper. Thirdly, William would be the bigger fool if he were never to let his children near their cousins as you suggest he might. Adults may squabble, but children are children, and should not be influenced or separated by their parents grievances.

All would have been well the first time if the vicious British press had leave them alone. But there had been endless lies fabricated from „sources“. Lies that most people believed. I cannot understand that they are going back to this hate filled country with this more hate creating press. I hope all will be going well especially the children are involved now. I have counted the articles about them today on the first page of the Daily Mail - sixteen!!!
I think the vicious British press cannot believe their luck. They will generate millions in the upcoming months. Of course it was Harrys idea and Meghan loves him so much that she accepted. I only hope she wont regret it.
And to the readers of the vicious British tabloids - don’t believe the things you read. They are only generating klicks and therefore more money that you can imagine with their lies.

    FASHION COMMENT:
I hope Duchess Meghan will keep us in touch with Californian fashion mode and trends.
Explained recently in a fashion mag as ….
“California style fashion is a laid-back, comfort-first aesthetic built on effortless cool, high-low clothing mixes, and outdoor-ready pieces. It blends beach culture, skate roots, and bohemian influences with casual luxury”.

Oh I agree - I love the fact Meghan is adventurous in her choices, whilst trying to find new and upcoming designers. I don’t always like her choices, but I love the fact she experiments. I also like Maxima and Letizia for the same reasons - they push the boundaries, not always with an outfit I love, but it is so much more fun than another of Camilla’s (perfectly respectably) zip up dressing gowns, or Kate’s coat dresses. To me Californian fashion is only interesting during summer and when on vacation. Someone above noted how difficult the situation is when the employees are speaking out about the Family. Think how devastating was when your own son and brother makes heartful comments. Yes, there is the tale of the prodigal son' s return in the Gospel, but in his absence he made harm only to himself, not to his family. I think it will be very difficult to "slaughter the fattened calf" for this "return".

So many seem to know so much almost on a personal level. They deserve all the scrutiny levelled at them, imo. They could have lived 'private 'lives as first declared but chose to monetise by betraying familial trust- which I think is absolutely disgraceful and can only be resolved by those involved. Leave it there and stop speculating . I just hope it does not impact on His Majesty's health.

Given the nonsense and poorly chosen words the couple have used over the last 6 years, Charles had likely been somewhat relieved to not have them as neighbours. If this is the case, I think Harry and Meghan have done the right thing and reorganised their lives so that Charles can have as much time as possible with his greater family.
This could explain why the king was not aware of his son and daughter in law’s plan .

They didn't complain about the country. They told the truth about the court, the family and the press just like Diana did. She said exactly the same as Harry. What did this tell us? Nothing changed in 30 years. They probably came back so their kids can get closer to the family and learn about dad's country. It's easier to say we believed Daily Mails lies...

Because Harry is British and he wants his children to know what that means. Because Harry is royal and he wants his children to see what that means. It’s probably more complicated than LRB suggests. We cannot know their rationale fully although time may reveal it. Normally when we live overseas we keep important relationships going the whole time by visits and calls, not break them and leave them broken for years then suddenly restore: this seems like a good side effect reason but unlikely the central rationale.

I’m pleased that the King will have a chance to get to know his Californian grandchildren, and just wish the press will leave them in peace once it learns they are not going to be working as royals. (Fat chance with the British tabloids, but one can always hope.) The move is important for the children’s future, so they will get to know their father’s family and make influential friends for their future in the high echelons of the British society.

As this is a fashion blog, I’m also excited about seeing more of Meghan’s effortless modern style in the (hopefully fairly few) public occasions she will be seen, such as the Christmas and Easter church, Wimbledon and Ascot. Or perhaps not Ascot, as she did seem pretty horrified about the treatment of horses the only time she was there…

If the people involved can get over this, who are we to judge? There is no need to damage anyone, country, family or individuals with harsh words. Nothing we will say will change the outcome; it only makes whatever process these people are going through, harder and less successful. I really hope for the best, for all parties involved, whatever the future brings for them. Let us leave the blame culture behind, please? I promise, if feels so much better (and I am really not without an opinion).

King Charles works incredibly hard for someone of his age, who is also dealing with serious health issues. He’s just made it to Balmoral for his much needed and wanted annual break when he’s landed with all the problems having H&M in the country will cause.

Perhaps I’m going a bit too fast but I wonder what Duchess Meghan is going to do about a stylist for her European wardrobe?
I think she has worked a lot with the celebrity Californian stylist Jamie Mizrahi.
Maybe this lady will have to look for a new client as the Californian style for day wear which is seen as relaxed, boho, beach-ready, and youth-driven is not at all in tune with London and the English countryside.
For her European wardrobe a stylist will have to look at what is generally seen as polished, chic, classic and timeless.
Exceptions to this are, of course, red carpet and gala evening gowns.
I wish this young family lots of happiness and peace from the Tabloids and I look forward to Helen getting us back to fashion, royal and otherwise.

No need for a stylist or expensive clothes. They are not working royals and don’t need to dress up glamourously as William and Catherine do so well.

I see Alexander McQueen and many of the European big names (Dior, Gucci, Givenchy, St.Laurent, etc.) especially those she has used before, filling her wardrobe and also some quality High Street brands for casual everyday wear. She's quite a sleek minimalist, and not into loud flashy wear when it comes to evening wear. I'm looking forward to her wearing the odd hat as well now and then, hopefully.

What Harry said in his book 'Spare'. Podcasts Meghan recorded and her personal comments as opposed to the move back to England. I personally believe the nature of the timing interesting. It is a complete 160 turnaround in attitude in wanting to make Britian home and the previous statements they made contrary to this.
