Crown Prince Haakon of Norway Celebrates His 53rd Birthday

Today, 20 July 2026, Crown Prince Haakon celebrates his 53rd birthday. He was born on 20 July 1973. Crown Prince Haakon is the son of King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway and is the heir to the Norwegian throne. This year, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit are celebrating their silver wedding anniversary. Crown Prince Haakon married Mette-Marit on 25 August 2001.

To mark their silver wedding anniversary, the wedding gown of Crown Princess Mette-Marit and the gala uniform of Crown Prince Haakon are on display in the Grand Ballroom of the Royal Palace in Oslo. This year's exhibition is dedicated to the Crown Prince and Crown Princess's silver wedding anniversary.

On 17 June 2026, Crown Princess Mette-Marit successfully underwent a lung transplant at Oslo University Hospital's Rikshospitalet. Following the transplant, she remained in hospital for nearly a month and was discharged from Rikshospitalet on 14 July 2026.

Are Holm, Head of the Department of Respiratory Diseases at Rikshospitalet, said that "Crown Princess Mette-Marit's condition is as good as could be expected under the circumstances."

The Crown Princess will undergo six months of physical rehabilitation and will be closely monitored for potential complications, including organ rejection and infections. She is not expected to undertake any official engagements during her rehabilitation period.
