This weekend, the Princess of Wales took on the National Three Peaks Challenge, an event in which participants climb the highest peaks in England, Scotland, and Wales. The Princess climbed the UK’s three highest mountains — Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England, and Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) in Wales — within 24 hours.
The Princess undertook the challenge solo, with support along the route from Mountain Rescue, and was greeted at the base of Yr Wyddfa by the Prince of Wales, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, as well as her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Princess said that she wanted to support “holistic healthcare” for cancer patients, describing it as a way to “improve quality of life during an extremely difficult period.” The Princess completed this endurance event to raise funds for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.
The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity launched a fundraising page for the Princess’s walk, stating that it would “support more people with cancer to benefit from holistic care.”
wow! hiking up mountains is no mean challenge, and it can be dangerous if there is an unexpected weather change or storm, which can happen in this high country. And she did it solo -- no entourage of videographers. journalists or bodyguards! just like a regular person.

Total Walking Distance: 23 miles (37 km).
Total Driving Distance: 462 miles across the country.
24 hour Time Breakdown: roughly 14 hours of total hiking time and 10 hours of driving.
14 hours of hiking in one day! Catherine would have had to train for this for months; no way a person can walk 14 hours well without preparation. I'm very impressed. Lyra
There is clearly video showing a videographer and a photographer. There were bodyguards in plain clothes as well. No need to make things up. No one expects the Princess of Wales to hike up anything alone. It's a nice achievement.
DeleteWould she have had to take a helicopter or how do you get between mountains? Even if you can (10 hours of driving) that kills so much of the time for that 24 hour goal.

She would have never been permitted to go climbing peaks alone, no?
What counts most here Is that Catherine is and ex -oncological patient.
She recovered well, of course, but her body and soul still carry the scars of that terrible illness.
She was putting herself to the test in a hostile environment and I reckon she had been training for weeks/ months before being able to undertake such challeging routes.
As I said before, it is a metaphor conveying a precise meaning: as hard as the cancer journey may get, never give up, you can still stand on your feet , never lose hope, try to reach your goal, endure and be grateful for all those assisted you tbroughout hardship, vulnerability and tears.
Of course, there is a concrete purpose behind climbing peaks: fundraising, a most commendable purpose, I'd say.

DeleteThere was a videographer and photographer. So hopefully we'll see some more images. Those shots can be parsed out and released throughout the charity drive. I'm glad she's supporting The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Something that can actually help people.

ReplyDelete@"not such a challenge these days": what do you mean, are those mountains getting less high or difficult "these days"? - Of course it is doable for many people, car transfer and fitness provided. But for even more people it is not doable. Just think a moment about the rate of obesity (2/3 in Britain and at least 40% in the US) in people over 16 - and how it might be higher in Catherine's age. That your husband did it, says nothing about it being a challenge or not.

DeleteHer body recorded every single pain she suffered but she succceeded in recovering health, strength and confidence.
I don't think any comparison is possibile or reasonable in this case.

ReplyDeleteI see a metaphor in her effort, I see the jarred, rough journey she undertook a few years ago, never giving up, never surrendering until she reached the highest peak, that little but most significant statement: "cancer free".
It Is the highest goal to reach though the journey is not yet fully completed.
It is a lifelong struggle , as I see it, and Catherine is well equipped to face adversity and to show other cancer patients the way to go.

DeleteWhen I went on holiday abroad I let my real jewelry in the safe and took some phantasy jewels with me to wear in the evening at the dining table in the hotel. During the day I wore a watch and my wedding ring. I also did mountain hiking, sometimes you need your hands to grab for support. A valuable ring can easily be damaged against the rocks. You can of course wear gloves. The people who are working with their hands in the construction business are asked not to wear jewelry, even a flat wedding ring is not allowed. It wouldn't be the first which is loosing a finger because of a ring. One can imagine that the insurance companies do not wish to insure people who cannot accept the rules.

On the video I see other people with backpacks. In the introduction I can read she had the support of the Mountain Rescue along the route. I assume she had the best equipment with her to call the rescue if necessary. Otherwise nobody is recommended to do hiking in the mountains without precautions and all alone. They would not let the PoW or anybody else taking unnecessary risks. I applaud her she can do this again. It means she is doing fine healthwise.
