On June 6, 2026, Queen Mary of Denmark attended LykkeCup at Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning as Chair of the Mary Foundation. Upon arrival, the Queen and the Mary Foundation’s CEO, Helle Østergaard, were welcomed by Rikke Nielsen, founder of LykkeLiga, Bolette Christensen, Chair of the LykkeLiga Board, and LykkeLiga players Magda.
During her visit to Boxen, the Queen watched a number of matches and also took part in an exhibition game herself. The Queen also had the opportunity to meet the Faroese LykkeLiga team and a LykkeLiga family.
LykkeLiga is a national handball community for children and young people with disabilities. The league was founded by former professional handball player Rikke Nielsen, who was unable to find a handball team for her daughter Magda, who has Down syndrome. Today, more than 1,500 children and young people with disabilities, aged between 5 and 25, are active in LykkeLiga clubs across Denmark.
LykkeCup is Denmark’s happiest season finale and the absolute highlight of the year for LykkeLiga players, coaches, families, and supporters. More than 900 handball-loving children and young people take part in LykkeCup. In January 2026, LykkeLiga received a special donation from the Mary Foundation.
