King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima Attend FIFA World Cup Matches

King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima, and their daughter Princess Ariane

On June 20, 2026, King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima, and their daughter Princess Ariane attended the Netherlands–Sweden group-stage match of the FIFA World Cup to support the Dutch national team, Oranje. The match took place at Houston Stadium in Houston, Texas. Minister Sterk for Long-Term Care, Youth and Sport also attended the match.

Following this, King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima, and Princess Ariane traveled to the Ecuador–Curaçao group-stage match at Kansas City Stadium in Kansas City to support The Blue Wave. The Prime Minister of Curaçao, the Minister of Sport of Curaçao, and several other government representatives from Curaçao also attended the match.

    Welcome to the US! Fun photos of the royals and great to see the princess accompanying her parents. Looks like a lot of orange in the crowd behind them so I’m sure the Dutch fans were happy to see the royals in attendance.

    Just a side question: this is the first time I can recall seeing the King and Queen wearing business attire at a sporting match when supporting a Netherlands Team. I note that they are dressed like the officials standing around them. Does anyone have some firm information as to why they have chosen to do this? Is this traditional for attending soccer matches? I can speculate on the reason --- but it would be interesting to know the facts and history. Lyra
