Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako attended the Japan Prize Award Ceremony

On April 14, 2026, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako attended the Japan Prize Award Ceremony at the New National Theatre in Shibuya, Tokyo. Organized by the Japan Prize Foundation, the award honors outstanding achievements in science and technology and is presented to scientists and engineers worldwide who have made significant contributions to global peace and prosperity.

The award recipients included three individuals, among them Professor Shizuo Akira, Specially Appointed Professor at Osaka University, who elucidated the mechanism by which innate immunity recognizes pathogens. The other recipients were Professor Cynthia Dwork of Harvard University and Professor Zhijian “James” Chen of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

    Empress Masako always elegant and graceful. I like this ensemble but once in a while it could be a little more color.

    Empress Masako looks lovely. It's the first time that I seem to recall her wearing such a flared evening skirt. I think her top would have paired better if it had been a little more fitted and structured, but it still looks very nice. Both of them look very dashing.
