On April 24, 2026, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan attended the 20th Greenery Ceremony (Midori) held at the Palace Hotel Tokyo in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. The “Greenery Academic Award” was presented to researchers who have made outstanding contributions in fields such as botany and nature conservation, with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi handing over the certificates of commendation.

After the ceremony, the Emperor and Empress met with the award recipients, including Professor Emeritus Yuji Isagi of Kyoto University and Professor Tetsuya Higashiyama of the University of Tokyo Graduate School, as well as individuals who have contributed to the promotion of greening initiatives. Professor Isagi has conducted research on the rare plant kakkosō on Mount Narukami in Gunma Prefecture.
